Correct, but Clickteam/3EE and their products are in no way related to
Active Worlds. JohnF should have posted that question on the Clickteam Forums located at http://www.clickteam.com/index.php3?page=3 instead of here in the newsgroups. -Builderz [View Quote] CorectionJan 28, 2001, 7:07pm

In the March 2001 issue of PC Gamer (on page 26), there is a small
article about Active Worlds. Here is an interesting excerpt about avatars: "Right now there are dozens of different models to choose from; future versions of the software will let you create your own skins to further personalize your online self." The article mentions the worlds Yellowstone, New York, and Mars. Here is another portion from the article about using AW for gaming: "Active Worlds understands its system's potential for gaming and is planning to jump aboard the online craze. While there is no word on whether the company's talking with any big-name game developers right now, it's just a matter of time before someone takes advantage of Active Worlds, and that's a day all gamers should look forward to." Comments, anyone? -Builderz What would make good website features?Feb 7, 2001, 6:32pm

Microsoft DirectX version 8.0a has been released on February 5. You can
download it for Windows 9x & Windows Me systems at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=27741 and for Windows 2000 at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=27742. Please take this into consideration, however: "The DirectX 8.0a run time cannot be uninstalled. The installation process changes core components and makes numerous registry changes within your operating system. Microsoft does not support uninstallation." Microsoft may not support uninstallation, but I have seen freeware utilities that can successfully uninstall DX 8.x from systems, in case something goes wrong. I haven't encountered any problems upgrading to DX 8.0a on my Win9x, WinMe, and Win2000 computers and all of my previous games and D3D accelerated programs work fine with DX 8.0a installed (some users complained that newer versions of DX "broke" games and programs that were intended to be used with an older version of DX, but that has yet to happen to me). Also, new NVIDIA Detonator 3 reference drivers (version 6.50) for Windows 9x, Me, NT, and 2000 have been released. Many people in the AW community use NVIDIA based graphics cards (myself included) and would probably benefit from updating your drivers. The drivers will work for the following NVIDIA chipsets/GPUs/processors (whatever NVIDIA calls them): TNT, TNT2, Vanta (including Vanta LT), GeForce (including DDR), GeForce2, Quadro and Quadro2. Go to http://www.nvidia.com/products.nsf/htmlmedia/detonator3.html to download the drivers. Now, you might be asking, "What does this have to do with the AW community, Builderz?" Well, Active Worlds 3.x uses DirectX for 3D graphic acceleration and I know some people that have not upgraded to the latest version of DirectX yet. Furthermore, as I've stated above, many AW citizens use NVIDIA graphics cards, and updated drivers usually fix visual bugs or try to improve upon performance. Installing DX 8.0a and/or the new NVIDIA drivers may or may not improve YOUR framerate(s) in AW, but in certain areas they have for me. I just thought some users would like to know about this information. -Builderz Zone AlarmFeb 8, 2001, 11:42pm
Zone AlarmFeb 8, 2001, 11:58pm
I have been using ZoneAlarm Pro (on the High setting for both Internet
and Local) on Windows 98SE, Me, and 2000 computers without ANY problems with Active Worlds. If it asks you "Do you want to allow Active Worlds Browser to access the Internet?", simply press "Yes" the first time you run AW. It will ask you if you want to allow AW to act as a server (depending on your security level, it may not do this) when you try and use the file transfer method. Just press "Yes" again. If you don't want to keep pressing "Yes" the next time you run the browser, go to the Programs tab, find your AW browser, and put a check next to "Allow connect" and "Allow server" (if you want file transfer abilities) for both Local and Internet. I also use ZAP on a Windows 2000 Professional system that I host bots and worlds on without any problems. ZAP is one of the best software based firewalls on the market. If you can't connect to AW using it, try adjusting the security levels to "Medium." If that doesn't work, a free decent firewall alternative is Tiny Personal Firewall, located at http://www.tinysoftware.com/pwall.php. -Builderz [View Quote] Zone AlarmFeb 9, 2001, 12:39am
Yep, I totally agree. I don't ever recall setting ZAP to anything lower
than High. ZAP is great to customize which ports bots and worlds should use and which ports should be blocked, like you said. -Builderz [View Quote] No Confidence VoteFeb 9, 2001, 12:42am

Techno Tag Tourny!!!Feb 15, 2001, 6:23pm
I have fixed this issue. Here is what was happening:
All information relating to Active Worlds on the Stuff-X website is located at http://www.stuffx.com/aw/index.html. Since most people would just type in and/or link to http://www.stuffx.com/ (like Lanezeri did), and not the /aw/ directory, I put a refresh meta tag in http://www.stuffx.com/index.html to automatically re-direct users to http://www.stuffx.com/aw/index.html as soon as the page loaded. Why? Because I didn't want to include all of the AW related information on the Stuff-X main website because I plan to expand the site into other things not related to AW. If a user came to the Stuff-X website from http://www.stuffx.com/ (which Lanezeri linked to), it would direct them to http://www.stuffx.com/aw/index.html. Then if they pressed their back button, it would send the user to http://www.stuffx.com/, which would execute again the refresh meta tag and send the user back to http://www.stuffx.com/aw/index.html. This, in turn, would cause a looping effect in which you could not get back to the true original site you were viewing when you pressed the back button on your browser. If a user came to the site using http://www.stuffx.com/aw/index.html, then they would not be directed and not have this problem. To fix the problem, I just uploaded the index.html from the /aw/ directory as the index.html to http://www.stuffx.com/ until I further develop the site. Also, I have told Lanezeri to change his link to http://www.stuffx.com/aw/index.html. I hope I didn't confuse too many people with this explanation. =) -Builderz [View Quote] First impressionsFeb 13, 2001, 9:49pm

Lanezeri first posted about TTT in a post titled "Techno Tag Tourny!!!"
on February 13th. TTT was going to be an event held in the world Techho, but no one showed up for it. It is a bot that Lanezeri made for playing tag. SCRAM is his NEW idea. More info can be found at http://wt.s5.com/events/scram.html. It is a sort of trivia game in which a word is scrambled and you have to unscramble the word. If you unscramble the word before anyone else, you get points and can win prizes (or at least that's my understanding). Give Lanezeri a break, folks. He's trying his best here. He may not always have proper grammar and spelling, but is chalk full of good ideas and has an ample amount of free time to carry those ideas out. He may seem like he is of the ranks of AFM, but he certainly IS NOT. Just give him a chance. [View Quote] Alright; Rolu, Wing, and yourself are correct. I thought that list was a compilation of ALL of Lanezeri's friends in Active Worlds. I see now that most of them are just people he is thanking. However, I do know that SOME of the people mentioned on that list are true friends of his (myself being one of them). The first time I met Lanezeri, I pictured him just like the rest of you. Once I actually gave him a chance and got to know him, he wasn't nearly as bad as he seemed to be. I do admit that he has a big mouth and has posted some things in the newsgroup that could have been handled in a different way (starting a new thread instead of replying to a current one, saying that he's leaving and then changing his mind, etc.); yet he has also posted some helpful information as well. If you get on his bad side or make him angry, he will probably start a personal vendetta against you. If you take the time and try to actually get to know him and discuss things in a civilized manner, he is a totally different person. I guess I just see him in a different light. I know he has his flaws (more flaws then some, maybe), but we both remain friends. > How can you find harassment unacceptable in this newsgroup? Have you even > BEEN to this newsgroup lately? Yes, I read the newsgroups daily, I know what goes on in them and am aware of the flame wars that are carried out. I see your point, Nornny. I guess I just got angry for SW Comit insulting Lanezeri since I am one of the few people to be considered one of his true friends. Its Lanezeri's decision on what he posts and what he doesn't post in these newsgroups. Its the community's decision of either liking or disliking him and either caring or not caring about him. Well, I usually take things seriously on-line, not jokingly, unless
someone specifically says they are joking or puts a smiley face, *wink*, etc. next to the statement. It isn't easy to tell whether people are joking, being sarcastic, or being serious on-line via text based communication. [View Quote] Moff Piett, I don't know what triggered your harshness from my post, but please calm down. I do not wish to engage in a flame war with you. I like Active World's built-in chat feature. To my knowledge, it even encrypts messages you send to other users before it sends them. The only things I dislike about it are: 1) the "period changes to a URL bug" and 2) you cannot use different fonts or font sizes. > Yeah.. irc support for the aw browser, and > maybe aol chat room windows when you're in the build menu, and maybelittle > chat windows for various other totaly useless non-aw related chat and > communication programs throughout the browser. As for your sarcasm about adding America Online chatroom functionality and a newsreader into AW, there was no need for you to say that. I don't know what I said in my post that would of offended you so badly. I agree that it would be a complete waste of time to add these things into AW. You couldn't even add AOL chatroom support anyway since its a proprietary standard and AOL is a b*tch when it comes to releasing any of their chat/instant message coding. > If you want irc, use an irc program. Someone invented it for a reason. I haven't used IRC in months. I hardly ever use it at all. I also agree with you on this issue. > If you want to chat about aw and "shoot the cow" or whatever strange expression > you used, Do you mean "shooting the bull?" James said "shoot the bull" in his post. I never said that in my post and in fact haven't used any expressions in it whatsoever. > you'd find many people with a similar interest in aw... actualy > in aw.
