Active Worlds Article In PC Gamer (Community)
Active Worlds Article In PC Gamer // Community
Feb 2, 2001, 11:36pm
In the March 2001 issue of PC Gamer (on page 26), there is a small
article about Active Worlds. Here is an interesting excerpt about
avatars: "Right now there are dozens of different models to choose from;
future versions of the software will let you create your own skins to
further personalize your online self." The article mentions the worlds
Yellowstone, New York, and Mars. Here is another portion from the
article about using AW for gaming: "Active Worlds understands its
system's potential for gaming and is planning to jump aboard the online
craze. While there is no word on whether the company's talking with any
big-name game developers right now, it's just a matter of time before
someone takes advantage of Active Worlds, and that's a day all gamers
should look forward to." Comments, anyone?

I also noticed this, after talking to Roland about it he told me that he had
no clue that they were even planning on creating a game...

That stuff is SOOOOOO outdated! And it's possible to have advanced RPG games
in AW right NOW! They should apologize for printing that article!!!

LOL. Apparently PCWorld has been holding that article for 2-3 years now. Or
they're talking about worlds chat. I think it's about time to cancel my
subscription.

I don't know the details but I think the avatar & skins info is correct. I
think there's plans for changes/enhancements in the next build or two as far
as avatars are concerned. As far as the gaming goes... With the new features
of 3.1 and more on the way, along with the sdk and a bot or 2, I can see
where someone with creativity and talent could make a pretty nice RPG game
right now. Just my .02

You gotta remember one thing though. Games in AWCom's mind is stuff like
bingo and bot controlled RPGs, lol...
