Well, since I cant get to beta, I guess it's back to here. I will NOT be
participating in any non-technical threads however. After updating to 3.1, I noticed only one obvious problem which after a quick exchange of telegrams Roland informed me that it was supposed to be like that. The object movement commands are very well done, and the lighting is amazing. Performance in terms of framerate is amazingly improved over 3.0 on my primary video card. However, when I exit the browser, my CPU maxes out and my HD access LED turns on for about 15 seconds. Duron 700 at 1050MHz (CPU multipler of 7), 64mb of PC150 RAM, Maxtor 20 gig 3400RPM HDD are the applicable specs for this problem. I've reproduced it several times. Midi, MP3 and wav are all on. I'll report back on the old gaps that Eep and I were talking about earlier. -- Wing Yes, I know I said I wouldnt be posting again but this is beta for god's sake. No fixed size swap file, no network access to the drive either (even
unplugged cable to make sure). And no, I sure haven't defragged. MS tool doesnt work and I haven't bought any utilities. Last reformat was early January, but that still seems a bit too soon for major fragmenting -- Wing This little spot is dedicated to my girl, Jessie. Since January? Hard drives should be defragmented a *minimum* of at least
once per week - especially if they are larger hard drives. I myself defrag mine every three days on an automatic defrag. You should also scandisk your computer at least once a week. Give it a good defrag and see how it goes. You gave the answer in your system specs. 64MB of ram is just barely enough to keep Windows in the memory :) What happens is that your swapfile grew pretty big while you were in AW and when you exit from it - AW saves it's cache and Windows cleans up the swap file. I consider it normal (especially since your HD is not the fastest one either)

Perhaps if they were consistent I could agree, but to me the commands are implemented half-assedly, as usual. Where is the wait option for rotate? Where is the INSTANT rotate and move--and indefinite waiting (i.e. infinite)? Where is the separate light direction position that doesn't require rotating the object the light is attached to? If only Roland and Shamus would have talked to me earlier about this design implementation perhaps these things would have been done RIGHT the FIRST time, but as it is now it's yet more partially implemented features. Typical. > and the lighting is amazing. Performance in terms of framerate is amazingly improved over 3.0 > on my primary video card. What video card is that? If anything performance is WORSE than AW3 because of the multiple lights. Seems like AW is trying to calculate light shading out beyond a light's radius, which is why frame rate rapidly decreases with higher visibilities and more lights in the scene (not just in-view). roluFeb 14, 2001, 9:22am
If only windows would use a decent file system...
there are many filesystems that don't even *need* defragging. rolu [View Quote] andrasFeb 14, 2001, 11:23am

NTFS is great, although, I still would defrag, even though it barely
fragments to bad..defragged the other day and I can tell its a little faster though.. -- -Xero IM: o0 Xero xero at darkvapor.com http://www.darkvapor.com wingFeb 14, 2001, 6:09pm
Primary card is Hercules Prophet II MX 32mb. Haven't tried it on TNT2 cards
yet though. I really have no explaination except AW3.0 ran at around 5 frames and 3.1 now runs at 10-15 frames. Haven't OCed the card any more since 3.0 either. -- Wing This little spot is dedicated to my girl, Jessie. Upgraded the drivers perhaps? I heard the newer Detonator drivers increase performance but I haven't tried them (I still use the Guillemot 3D Prophet 5.22 drivers).
