Robbie is a great modeler and this building set shows it. :) This is
perfect for anyone wanting to setup a gaming world (such as a first
person shooter, paintball, or anything else). Plus, the price isn't very
high for all that you get (especially for all the time and work put into
it). Good luck with your citizenship, Robbie.

Some kind of error in outlook..

Jul 14, 2003, 12:40pm
I would say don't use Outlook or Outlook Express, but in this case, I'm
getting the same "hangs" or "pauses" to the NG's just like everyone
else. Maybe the AW news server does a reverse DNS lookup at random times
(this can take time, as some FTP servers do this as well)? I know they
used to use the BlackICE firewall in the past on the news server, maybe
they misconfigured something with that? Whatever it is, I think it
should be looked into.

editing an MP3

Jul 18, 2003, 3:23pm
Verizon was also ordered to give out the name of at least one customer
who was sharing lots of files. IMO, use Kazaa and other P2P file sharing
networks at your own risk. The days of free loading off of Napster are
no more and now it is just an ongoing battle between the
traders/downloaders and the RIAA/MPAA. There *are* legal and copyright
free/royalty free things that can be found on P2P networks, but most
things being downloaded and shared are illegal. I don't think the Feds
will come knocking on your door if you share a few MP3s, but you may be
tracked and fined (one college student was fined $12K USD for simply
making a search engine that allowed others to find and download MP3s on
his university's network or something).

I've read articles in the past about Paramount or VIACOM taking "fan

related to Star Trek avs or objects yet. ;) Although I did hear
something about a Stargate SG-1 AW thing being shut down.

World Hosting

Aug 2, 2003, 12:56pm
1. Check the servers via the admin tool often to check this (checking is
fine and should be done by good hosts periodically anyway).
2. Make an automated program or script to determine if a customer is
going over their world limit.
3. Make an AUP or TOS that states that each customer can only host one
world per admin tool or something.

There is an interesting interview with author Neal Stephenson (of "Snow

can't see a resemblance. Well, I think someone needs to show him COFmeta

Help Please?

Aug 26, 2003, 1:36am
If the other suggestions mentioned don't work out, you could always give
the Sambar Server a try. I've used it on my local LAN in the past under
XP Pro without any problems. It may not have all the bells and whistles
that other Web servers have, but it works for most needs. More info can
be found at:

A review of version 5.0 can be found here:

Whatever you do, do NOT use IIS! LOL.

Sambar seems pretty stable to me, but you are right -- the admin area
needs some work and it has had some security vulnerabilities in the past
(but most are fixed relatively quickly). I know IIS can be secured and
work well on some systems, but I myself wouldn't touch it with a ten
foot pole. I suggest anyone that use it lock it down as tightly as
possible.

Help Please?

Aug 26, 2003, 7:08pm
I do use an SSH client to connect to a BSD shell (thanks Tony :)
remotely and use a limited amount commands via the command line, BTW. XP
does have its DOS-like command line, and you can run scripts and things
over a network using it, but I don't believe you can truly admin a
Windows box with a command line remotely -- so you are correct there.

However, even if VNC, Radmin, etc. do resemble a great portion of your
Windows UI (or just redraw the whole screen), I personally don't call
them "virtual desktops." I remember using some old program where you
could make four separate desktops on your Windows machine and switch
from one to the other very easily -- on the client side. In that case,
yes, I might call those extra desktop areas and programs like VMWare
"virtual desktops." However, I would call VNC, Radmin, etc. simply
"remote admin software." But that's just me and I don't want to start a
twenty post flame war over the different phrases. :P

Everythings changed and should work but 1 minor problem that I need help with please:)

Aug 28, 2003, 12:38pm
What "things" seem to confuse you, Bit? We can try to help you better
understand them. No offense, but I wouldn't be hosting any type of
server using Win98 nowadays. Are you confused with the XP GUI? All of
the services? Fast user switching? The "disappearing" tray icons? Trying
to find the right drivers?

You can pretty much customize and change XP to appear and work just like
W2K (or even use the compatibility mode to mimic Win98) -- if you know
where to look. When I first got XP, I hated the interface and a few
other new "features." But I did some reading, found some tweak sites,
and changed a few registry entries -- and things were the way I liked
it. I think I've only had one major crash using XP since I got it. While
it does have its flaws, I think it is a big step in the right direction.
Anyway, at least you aren't using WinME. Heh.

Nov 5, 2003, 3:03am
For those of you who have no idea what we are talking about, check out
http://www.homestarrunner.com :) It is full of very funny (and clean) humor.

My personal favorite is at http://www.homestarrunner.com/fhqwhgads.zip
(based on a spelling error someone sent in an e-mail).

There is also someone I met in AW that has a H*R world (but I forget its
name).

Oh, and a note to Bowen: I hope this doesn't make you stop visiting the
H*R site, but they use Windows and IIS
(http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph/?host=homestarrunner.com).

World Sever Problem

Nov 4, 2003, 8:54pm
You may need to "reset" your world when you first install it (or move
it) to a new computer/server. This is one cause of the "Looking for..."
message. Make sure you have a backup of your world data (property,
attributes, and terrain) and try this: in the world admin tool,
right-click on Unreal and then select "Reset World." Then reload/import
your world data (property, attributes, etc.) again using the admin tool.

Restart your AW browser and try to enter Unreal again. Hopefully it
should work. If not, do you have a router, firewall, or an Internet
sharing device that may be blocking something?

World Sever Problem

Nov 4, 2003, 10:34pm
Okay, since you use a router, get the local IP address (not your public
IP address) of the WinMe computer (for example, 192.168.0.3). Then go
into the admin interface of your router (you usually do this by typing
its IP address into your Web browser). Make sure that port 7777 TCP (the
default world server port) is open and points to the local IP address of
the WinMe computer. Look at your router's manual or search the Web to
figure out how to do this on your particular model. Or go to
http://www.andras.net/router_aw/router_aw.html for more information.

World Sever Problem

Nov 5, 2003, 2:50am
For security reasons, you should *always* use a firewall and/or an
intrusion detection system (IDS) when hosting a world (or any server,
for that matter). Many routers include stateful packet inspection (SPI)
firewalls, but usually only protect incoming data and not outgoing. So
what this means is that it is usually necessary to run a software
firewall on your system to block unauthorized outgoing access attempts.
This is how a majority of Trojan horse programs and spyware are able to
"phone home" your information to an unscrupulous party.

Now, configuring your router and/or firewall rules is another matter. It
depends on what type or model you have, but generally you want to allow
certain ports to get through so your world will work properly.
http://www.andras.net/router_aw/router_aw.html was mentioned before, and
is a good guide.

Lastly, I also recommend that you allow HTTPS (TCP port 443) traffic to
the world server. The AW browser uses this port for users that can't
access AW via other ways. It is commonly used for people at work with
corporate firewalls or proxy servers that block AW's standard ports.
