Whenever im reading the newsgroups, sometimes it takes so damn long to get a
post.. It's starting to piss me off. Any ideas what this bugger is?

Microplanet Gravity has the same problem, it's not a client bug...more like a
server config or network issue. Maybe if ENZO cleans up the last two months
posts it will be faster :)

I higly doubt that it is an Outlook bug this time,
it happens to me on this particular news server all
the time.

Happened on my old machine with NetScape, Opera and
FAgent and on my new one with Mozilla as well.

The response times of this server are up to 30 sec
and sometimes the connection even times out.

Maybe it's a router problem at one of the mains?

Would be interesting to know if you have the same trouble with news.andras.net. Both uses the same news server program but I can't tell if my one experiences the same problem being a local address :)
I guess it is something to do with the authorization process - tho the reading doesn't requires authentication.

Nope, no trouble there at all, the response time
is less than a second on your server.

The problem with news.activeworlds.com is not new,
I don't think it is a temporary router problem.
The server is slow for several months now.

> The server is slow for several months now.

It appears to me rather that the server thread sometimes is stuck or
needs a lot of time to reverse dns, since after the initial waiting
period, it responds quite fast then.

I would say don't use Outlook or Outlook Express, but in this case, I'm
getting the same "hangs" or "pauses" to the NG's just like everyone
else. Maybe the AW news server does a reverse DNS lookup at random times
(this can take time, as some FTP servers do this as well)? I know they
used to use the BlackICE firewall in the past on the news server, maybe
they misconfigured something with that? Whatever it is, I think it
should be looked into.

Yes I think this makes sense, because it happens to me only when I click on
a thread, and it happens randomly.

I think its related to the auth setup we use. The news server spawns an SDK
app that auths your username in the AW universe. If you have the status bar
showing you will see that it shows "Authorizing" for awhile. Try not using a
user name and password and reading threads to see if it makes a difference.
Of course you will not be able to post while you are in this state so you
will have to change the setting to reply :)

What about caching the password settings?

New request to the AW uniserver only when
- someone makes his first posting
- the cached password does not match the given password

I concur still happening for me,........and it's BEFORE the "connecting..." and "authorizing" stages...:) In OE I might add......but this is a server problem. Never does this for all the other newsgroups I read.

Yes it does seem better and a little faster but still hangs regularly.
