Ok...I decided phooey with all that winxp and installed windows 2003 server.
Hated that also, so I'm back to win98se.
One problem.
This pc has an AMD Athlon 800MHz with no video card present in the slots.
When I check properties under my computer it shows to have a Standard PCI
Graphics Adapter (VGA) in it.
Prior to loading win98se I could set my resolution to 256 or 16 bit high
color.
Now it won't let me use anything but 16 or 2 bit color, which of course
looks major ugly!
I have tried installing a 3dfx Voodoo in one of the slots, (with drivers)
but it places the card under Audio/Video/Game controllers and defaults to
the VGA (card?) mode. And yes I have updated vga drivers from the 98se disk.
Iv'e tried the voodoo card in different slots and still no go.
I am thinking that the vga card is built into the motherboard possibly?
But I don't understand how installing OS's could effect it not working
properly?
Help!!!!!.....please:)

Wouldn't windows 2003 expire in like, a few months anyway? ;) If you have a
copy, install windows 2000 professional, or whichever really. Then get
apache (if you have some time to figure it out, sambar if you want something
easy, or Xitami O.O), and install that. But, windows 98? ;)

But, if you'd like a stable machine, you should look at 2000 a little closer
:O. But, personally, I ran windows 3.1 untill I upgraded to XP. :)

Oh you people are no help.
Bits, either you will need to take the voodoo card out and install the video
drivers that came with your motherboard CD, or you will have to go into the
BIOS and change a setting so that the Voodoo card will work.
This is how to do the latter:
On startup, press F2, Del, or CNTL+ALT+S. It's usually Delete that gets you
into the BIOS, but if that doesn't work, try one of the other two. You
should see an option in one of the sub menus to disable onboard VGA or to
set the default VGA to either PCI or AGP as opposed to on-board. I'm afraid
I dont' know which menu it is, but it's only a level deep. You should find
it no sweat. After that's done install your voodoo card drivers.
One of those two *should* work. If not, well... post here and maybe we'll
find another solution.

Reinstall xp. It is much faster, more stable, easier to use, and is just
better overall. You can make it have a very similar interface to win98 if
you want too.

What "things" seem to confuse you, Bit? We can try to help you better
understand them. No offense, but I wouldn't be hosting any type of
server using Win98 nowadays. Are you confused with the XP GUI? All of
the services? Fast user switching? The "disappearing" tray icons? Trying
to find the right drivers?
You can pretty much customize and change XP to appear and work just like
W2K (or even use the compatibility mode to mimic Win98) -- if you know
where to look. When I first got XP, I hated the interface and a few
other new "features." But I did some reading, found some tweak sites,
and changed a few registry entries -- and things were the way I liked
it. I think I've only had one major crash using XP since I got it. While
it does have its flaws, I think it is a big step in the right direction.
Anyway, at least you aren't using WinME. Heh.

Thanks Builderz for the offer:)
I just don't like having to have "administrative" knowledge to run a
personal pc.
It seems with winxp and win2k and NT and windows 2003 server, a person has
to have a college degree to utilize it.
My degree was in theatre technology and design....not computers....lol
Oh well:)

=== Installing Third Party Video Card ===
To install a new video card, you have to first disable the onboard
video. To disable the factory-installed component, follow these steps:
1. Right-click My Computer and select Properties.
2. Select the Device Manager tab.
3. Scroll to the desired device category like Display Adapters.
4. Click the plus (+) sign to expand the list.
5. Double-click the item.
6. Select the "Disable in this Hardware Profile" option or deselect the
"Exists in All Hardware Profiles" option.
7. Click OK and then click OK again.
8. Shut down the computer.
This will disable the onboard video card. Now, install the new video
card by following these steps:
1. Open the system and place the new video card in the slot provided.
2. Unplug the monitor from its current position and connect it to the
new VGA port.
3. Start the computer.
CAUTION: The steps to install the display adapter involve registry
modifications. A registry backup is essential. An
incorrect registry entry may cause serious system
problems or prevent the computer from starting. You
will not be warned of any incorrect registry entries.
If the registry is not backed up,the only way to recover
the system is by reinstalling the operating system.
Please follow the steps listed below to back up your registry:
1. Click Start and then click Run.
2. Type REGEDIT in the Open field and click OK.
3. Click "Registry" in the menu.
4. Click "Export Registry" from the drop-down menu.
5. Click the down arrow beside "Save In" and select Local Disk (C:).
6. Type BACKUP.REG in the File Name field.
6. Verify that the "All" radio button under the "Export Range" is
selected.
7. Click Save.
To install the display adapter, follow these steps:
1. Right-click the desktop, click Properties to view the display
properties, and then click the Settings tab.
2. Click the Advanced button and then click the Adapter tab.
3. Click Change and change the adapter to a Standard VGA card. It does
not matter if you do not select PCI.
NOTE: Do not restart the computer even if you are prompted.
4. Open Windows Explorer and go to the "C:\Windows\Inf\Other"
directory.
5. Delete all INF files relating to video cards.
NOTE: There may be other INF files for sound cards and other
peripherals. Remove only the INF files related to video
cards.
6. Go back to the "C:\Windows\Inf" folder. Delete the drvdata.bin and
drvidx.bin files if they exist.
7. Click the Start button, select Run, and type regedit.
8. Click the plus (+) sign beside HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and then the plus
(+) sign beside Software folder.
9. Look for folders referring to video cards like "3Dfx Interactive,"
"NVIDIA" and so on. The folder names will vary depending on the
drivers and cards installed. However, the folders related to video
cards can be easily identified.
10. Delete the directories related to video cards.
11. Restart the computer. The computer will redetect the video card.
12. Cancel the request for drivers and load into 640x480x16 colors.
13. Insert the CD that came with the video card to load the drivers and
tools.
14. Restart the computer when prompted and install the drivers from the
CD.
This will install the display adapter in your computer.

Nah, windows 98 (all versions) is far less stable than XP, as well as slower
(all statistics you will see show these things)... unless you have less than
128 MB of memory. XPs interface simplifies most task's (example: networking,
security restrictions, etc.). XP Pro does at least (-:

nah, its all easy. Just go through a few menus and change a few settings and
you have an interface like win2k, almost exactly the same as Windows 98
(with a few things simplified). Win2k is the same thing as win98
(basically). You should switch now and get used to XP, before no new
applications are compatible with 98 (which will happen in a few years) and
you HAVE to switch to XP.

Ok....should I decide to reinstall xp...what exactly would I need to do in
setup and afterwards to insure I could run the AW worlds servers and object
paths and web page servers?
I already have domain names registered and all and pointing to the correct
information.
I am just concerned at what I DON'T know about xp that has prevented me from
hosting servers already?
