Win2K security: Code Red worm defense

Sep 1, 2001, 11:08am
Okay, here are some quotes from a discussion on the program from
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,1253119;root=security,1;mode=flat:

o "But if this application doesn't come with source code, you'd be out
of your mind to run it."
o "And if you run this from your personal machine, you will undoubtedly
be violating your Terms Of Service set forth by your ISP. You may also
find yourself accused of interference by the owners of the infected
machines. If you run this from where you work, you could be exposing
your employer to legal risks, too."
o "I am much too paranoid to get involved with this kind of crusade by
putting my own or my company's resources into the fray."
o "The program no doubt has to actually enter the computer and place a
file or modify something to bring the warning up. That by itself could
be considered illegal no matter how good your intentions are."
o "Sometimes you'll find out that some users won't appreciate the
notification even if it serves them well and you may find a few new
enemies."
o "The program can actually cause you harm by opening your port 80 if
it's not written properly."
o "If you're getting hit, why not just grab the IP from your logs and
notify the ISP owner of the IP? Let them deal with it."
o "But it runs code on the other machine. This is certainly tampering,
and would be prohibited by your ISP's TOS and open you and/or your
employer to liability."
o "I don't know how it works in Canada, but in the USA hacking into
another person's computer without permission regardless of your
intentions is a crime."
o "Well actually the script you linked to, does copy things to the hard
drive. The first line creates a net send alert. The second line creates
an Internet shortcut and puts it on your drive C:. the third line writes
in to the shortcut file and the forth line creates another file on your
hard drive and puts the text 'lysine deficiency' in it. Why? Beats me."

Those are just a few quotes of people's opinions regarding the program.
I am not saying that I agree with anything or everything being said, I
am just trying to show different people's perspectives on the program
from an ethical viewpoint. The types of users quoted above believe that
it is against some good standing computer science principals to not
modify anything system that doesn't belong to them, even if the
modification does something good (like patch a hole or fix a security
flaw). I'm just passing along what I have read and each individual user
can make up their own mind if they want to run and use the program or
not.

Funny T-Shirts

Sep 1, 2001, 9:21pm
I came across these two stores on www.cafepress.com and thought some of
you might find them funny. The first (located at
http://www.cafepress.com/bill_gates/) has T-shirts and other apparel
with a mug shot of Mr. Gates when he was arrested back in '77. The
second (located at http://www.cafepress.com/code_red/) has a picture of
a worm with a "no smoking" sign around it and text that reads "I
survived the Code Red worm!" I just thought some of you might be
interested (and I've heard www.cafepress.com mentioned a few times at
last week's TechTalk).

COMMUNITY WARNING

Sep 12, 2001, 9:34pm
I tested Radon's AW Ear program about two days before he released it,
yet I did not download and use his bot(s) that transmitted AW passwords.
Companies do not make "anti-trust" software. It is a good rule of thumb
to trust the programmer of a program you are going to run on your
computer before you open it. If you do not trust the program and/or the
programmer, then you need to add appropriate security measures to your
system.

If properly configured and working correctly, Zone Alarm/Zone Alarm Pro
should alert you to any program that tries to access the Internet and/or
local network (if the program is not already in ZA/ZAP's Program
Settings). I believe ZA/ZAP uses MD5 checksums to differentiate between
two files with the same name. I am not saying that ZoneAlarm is fool
proof. The program title and .exe could be named anything, and this is
where the user needs to use vigilance.

You say: "It is best to use up to date virus software from major
companies like Norton and Mcafee." It is a *wise* decision to use
anti-virus software *such as* products made by Norton and McAfee, but
that is not necessarily the *best* solution. If you want the *best*
solution, in my opinion, you would run the bot on a computer
disconnected from all other networks (including the Internet), running
in a "sandbox" environment, with both anti-virus and anti-trojan
software running in the background with the most current definition
files. If you needed the Internet for the bot to function (which you
probably would), I suggest having at least one software firewall running
as well. Generally, the more layers of security you have, the better
your overall protection. After some testing of the bot, and it has been
deemed "safe," transfer it over onto another computer system you use
more often for more convenient usage.

Anti-virus programs will most likely *not* detect a trojan horse. That
is what *anti-trojan* software is for. The two may sound similar, but
try to combat two different things. Anti-virus software may indeed
detect a trojan on your system, but anti-trojan software is better
handled for such things. For the most part, they both depend on "fixed"
definition files that contain a library of known viruses, worms, and
trojans (very few do not). If the malicious code is not in that library,
then the software uses its heuristic feature (if it has one) to scan for
virus/worm/trojan-like activity. If it passes that stage, the
code/program is allowed to execute.

COMMUNITY WARNING

Sep 14, 2001, 5:29pm
Wing, I know not everyone has the knowledge and resources to implement
and use the security environment I described in my last post. Heck, I
know many people who don't even know what a firewall or anti-virus
program is, let alone use one. I was just trying to get the point across
that Insanity used a bad choice of word when saying "best." I think
Andras' post was, too. Call me extremely picky or very opinionated if
you'd like, but Insanity should know better than that being the man
behind a hosting provider like Heartfall.

About ZA/ZAP being over hyped, I'm somewhat indifferent about that.
Sure, they may go a little overboard sometimes, but I've tested both ZA
and ZAP on numerous systems, and both programs do exactly what they say.
If it is free, why *not* over hype it? Sure, they want you to buy ZAP,
but still. If the hyping gets more people to download and install a
firewall on their computer system, then we are that much more closer to
securing another system connected to the gigantic network we call the
Internet.

a bad idea to backup your object path if it isn't hosted on your

OneSummer and Just In? I host three bots in Broadway world and one in

Not to offend you, KAH, but that is why I said I wanted "any relevant,
concrete proof" about his accusations against OneSummer and Just In. If
most of it is just rumors, then they will stay rumors. But if OneSummer
and Just In really are manipulating other citizens and/or engaging in
some form of fraudulent activity, then things need to be reevaluated.

I made was off topic, but not spam. I didn't post this in community,
worldbuilders, bots, or any other group. I figured it wouldn't bother
anyone here in general.discussion, but I was wrong. I will not post
anything else relating to the eStore here in the newsgroups. Please

IA, did I ever say it wasn't a Vstore.com store? No. Vstore is certainly
better than signing up for a dozen or more affiliate sites and
plastering products on a Web page in random order and calling it a
store. Did I ever say that my store is better or cheaper than Price
Watch? No. Did I ever call the store "special?" No. Sure Price Watch,
Tiger Direct, and others have lower prices. IMO, however, the prices at
my store are *reasonable*. I never forced anyone to go visit or buy from
my store. I don't think the prices at my store are so high that you can
"save a couple of grand" over Price Watch. Maybe a couple of dollars
here and there, but nothing close to a few thousand. Instead of trying
to "attack" me and my store, why not try and give some constructive
criticism about it? Or why not even go the extra step and make your own
store that is better than mine?

For those of you that didn't go to this week's TechTalk (or didn't read

support. Below are two screen shots of the "early terrain prototype"

The terrain kind of reminds me of the terrain in Tribes 2. Now, if we
only had a firing mechanism and the ability to jump... ;)

Also, at least three things from the Feature Vote page (located at
http://www.activeworlds.com/featurevote/) will be added to AW 3.3 (which
includes new privacy options). When will AW 3.3 be coming out? Probably
sometime in early 2002.

I believe the terrain feature will be a feature in the world options.

VROOM VROOM! The fastest....

Dec 16, 2001, 12:19pm
I don't know if these would be considered the "best" components, but
they are considered "top of the line" at this point in time:

CPU: AMD XP 1900+ (it runs at 1.6 GHz)
I have never bought any Intel processor past the PII, so my answer may
be a little biased. I have AMD procs ranging from pre-Thunderbird times
all the way to the newest XP proc. I have not had a problem with any of
them and they all seem to be stable (even the OEM procs can withstand my
evil burn-in testing. ;) One thing to mention is that they run a LOT
hotter than Intel procs. I saw a video on Tom's Hardware Guide that
showed what happens when the heatsink/fan combo was removed. The Intel
system just slowed down, while the AMD proc actually started to smoke in
just a few seconds. I heard that AMD is working with motherboard or
power supply manufacturers (I forget which one, maybe it is both) so
that if the processor reaches a certain temp, it will cut power to the
motherboard, and prevent overheating. If you get a new AMD proc, you
NEED GOOD COOLING!

RAM: Corsair DDR RAM
Good for overclocking.

Motherboard: (AMD Only) ASUS A7V266-E
Here is a review:
http://www.hardocp.com/reviews/mainboards/asus/a7v266-e/. It has a
feature that will either throttle the CPU speed if it reaches a certain
temp or shut the system down to prevent overheating.

Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 3, GeForce 3 Ti 200, or GeForce 3 Ti 500

Case: Any aluminum case (I personally like Lian-Li cases)

Sound Card: I would go with Creative Labs' Audigy line of sound cards

The above is just my opinion. If you want reviews of hardware, check out
