If you consider ZoneAlarm/ZoneAlarm Pro to be a "weak" firewall, what
other firewall product(s) do you recommend, Wing?

ZONE alarm

May 16, 2001, 6:16pm
Please see my comments below:

[View Quote] I also agree that one of the best things you can do to increase your
system's security is to educate yourself on security and related topics.

> The only reason I classify ZoneAlarm as weak is because online,
> there are COUNTLESS tutorials that allow you to take advantage of it's bug's glitches, features and even the fact that it's a
> software title period.

I've also seen a few vulnerabilities and trojan horse programs that
claim they can defeat ZoneAlarm/ZoneAlarm Pro. But in the most recent
version that ZoneLabs has just recently released appears to fix most of
these threats, such as the Mutex vulnerability. I haven't found many
bugs and/or glitches in ZA nor ZAP. Care to either post or e-mail me a
few you found? ZoneAlarm and ZoneAlarm Pro are software firewalls, but
ZoneAlarm is also free and in my opinion is better than some commercial
firewall products. The firewall in Windows XP is also software based.
Yet can a hardware firewall prevent information from leaving your
machine the way ZoneAlarm does? One piece of software isn't going to
protect you 100% on the Internet. It seems that layered security is the
"in" thing to do now in the IT field. If you really do think ZoneAlarm
is weak, take a look at http://grc.com/lt/scoreboard.htm.

> Since I didn't believe them at first, I actually grabbed a copy of Zone Alarm, installed it on a networked
> machine and proceeded to break into my own system.

The only vulnerability I found with ZoneAlarm Pro had to do with a Mutex
issue. As far as I know, it has been fixed in the most recent version.
I'd be interested to know if you can get by the MOST RECENT version ZA
or ZAP. I believe the most current version of ZAP is 2.6.88 (as of this
writing).

Yep, I remember King Punisher and his "posse" back in 1995 very well.
Could never forget the AW Police Department, either. ;) And the New
World Times brings back memories as well. Not to worry though; all of
the bugs and vulnerabilities Punisher and his group exploited in the AW
software have been fixed. It is indeed an interesting story and captures
a period of time when AW was in its infancy. I encourage all citizens
that immigrated from 1997 on to look at the screen shots of the AW
Browser on that website. THAT is what us "old timers" had to use way
back when. They didn't even have telegrams back then (which could either
be a good OR a bad thing, depending on how you look at it ;). It is my
personal view that King Punisher and his fellow members have left AW for
good (I doubt he ever registered a citizenship when now AWCI started
charging for them). But I do believe that Punisher paved the way for all
of the other "hacker groups" and "vandalism groups" that existed/still
do exist in AW today. It is an interesting part of AW history.

True, I forgot to mention that. There wasn't even whispers or even a
contact list implemented yet, if I can recall correctly. Join requests
weren't added yet either.

> it took ages to walk to your building site, and then you hoped you didnt get

LOL. So true. Hmm...what version did Ron and/or Roland implement the
faster moving Ctrl key? You NEEDED to hold down Ctrl just to get around
back then.

I think the Grand Central Station was the most visited property back
then because everyone either had or wanted a teleport to their property
there. Ah...the good old days. Hehe.

You got me. I forgot about the lack of menu support back then too. Heck,
some of these "Active Worlds clones" people are trying to make seem to
have more features than the first version of the AW browser had in it.
Hehe. Ah, yes. I also remember PowWow. That used to be a good program.
If I can recall correctly, it had a white board type feature in it that
I used to use fairly often. I used to talk to this one AW citizen from
Israel over PowWow a lot. And you're right; you gotta love that loon
wave file. ;) Beats the ICQ "horn" sound. The latest version of ICQ,
IMO, is bloatware. Ever since AOL bought/merged/whatever with Mirabilis,
you could tell it would turn into either ad-ware or bloatware.

GeForce2

May 29, 2001, 10:09pm
I agree with Wing that a new graphics card seems to be the best upgrade
option for your current system. S p a r k, your CPU is adequate, more
RAM is always better (but it doesn't seem like you need more), and a 20
GB hard drive is fine. But you may want to look at the following sites
for comparison pricing:

1) Go to http://www.pricewatch.com/ and search for "geforce 2 mx" and
find some Generic cards for about $50 USD.

2) Go to
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&ht=1&ebaytag1=ebayreg&query=geforce+2+mx&category0=&minPrice=1&maxPrice=100&ebaytag1code=0&st=0&SortProperty=MetaEndSort
and look at the cards. None of them are greater than $100 USD. If the
link doesn't work when you click on it, copy and paste the entire thing
into your browser, one "line" at a time.

According to http://www.eggxpress.com/standards/standconn.html, an OC256

million per month. One word can describe that price: ouch. I think I'll
stick to my DSL connection for the time being. =) Interestingly, the

accurate? If it is, no wonder businesses are leaning towards cable and

FYI: it is called IP address, not "ISP NUMBER" and on certain types of
DSL you can have dynamic (changing) IP addresses. If your ISP lets you
have multiple static IP addresses (like mine does), and you get ejected
from a world, just change your IP and you are good to go. Or if you
still have a modem in your computer with broadband access, just use
regular dial-up and re-enter the world. =)

Jun 1, 2001, 5:56pm
If you think his language is bad now, you should have seen him years
ago. If you don't like what he has to say, I suggest you filter him in
your newsreader. Everyone here is entitled to their freedom of speech,
which includes the right to curse or not to curse. Some don't mind it,
other do. Some don't agree with what Eep has to say, others do. What Eep
says may or may not go against the community charter, but since AWCI
hasn't appointed an "official" moderator to enforce the charter (Facter
reads this newsgroup, but his official job description does not include
moderator), in my opinion, swearing in these newsgroups is fair game.

Eep....and his f*cking mouth

Jun 1, 2001, 10:26pm
I was "defending" Eep because even though he may not be the politest
person in the world, in my opinion, he has done numerous things for the
community. Take one look at his website (located at
http://tnlc.com/eep/aw/). His history page, RWX scripting page, and
improvements page alone are excellent and contain vast amounts of
valuable information. What other citizen (besides possibly Mauz and/or
Dataman) has created an Active Worlds related website as extensive as
this? You have to give Eep credit for this. Although I suggest he takes
an anger management course, you can't deny what he has brought to the AW
community (both good and bad).

Eep is also never afraid to confront the staff of AWCI and tell them
their faults and/or offer suggestions. He also tries not to let Active
Worlds become too "stagnant" (as he likes to call it) and pushes for
change/reform. Additionally, he has enough guts to inform other posters
here that lack common sense their faults. And for some strange reason,
whenever Eep gets himself involved, the "trouble poster" usually
goes away or learns from the experience. If you don't believe me, read
some posts made by Eep over the past years in these newsgroups. He and
Mauz have also created the great worlds of Cubed and Hole and they are
two very intriguing worlds. I would gladly host both of them free of
charge at any time. Eep has been around the community since 1997 (if I
recall correctly) and knows what is going on here.

I could continue with even more reasons why I respect Eep in the
community, but I think you have read enough. By the way, who told you
that I "don't like him?"

Maybe I should have been more clear. When I typed "here" in my prior
message, I was referring to the United States of America and its First
Amendment. However, I realize that there are many users in these
newsgroups that are not located in the USA. On the other hand, many
other countries do have freedom of speech. But my point still remains:
we basically CAN say/post whatever we want to "here" (in this newsgroup)
since no one actually enforces the charter. Heck, I remember when people
posted warez serial numbers in this group a while back. I can only
imagine what a potential investor would be saying about AWCI if they
actually took the time to read a few months worth of posts here...

Those Usenet netiquette links would be of more use if users of the
newsgroup would abide with the charter. But again, since no one actively
moderates this newsgroup (and as we have seen in other people's posts),
people that do not possess proper Usenet newgroup netiquette DO and HAVE
posted here. In essence, since no one enforces the charter, not everyone
thinks they should abide to it (hence the cursing and other "rude"
postings contained in the NG).

If you mean "expanding" as in expanding Alpha World's ground zero, I
doubt it. They haven't made any significant changes to it for quite some
time. If you mean "expanding" as in making more land available to build
on, then I doubt they will do that either. To the best of my knowledge,
Alpha World is the largest single world in the Active Worlds universe.
There is ample land there that people can build on. You just need to

[Possibly OT]: Telegram Encryption?

Jun 7, 2001, 1:56pm
I've heard that whispers and regular chat messages were encrypted before
being transmitted to others in AW, but are telegrams also encrypted
while in transit to AW's server? I know all telegrams are stored in an
AWCI owned server and then "sent" to the user whenever they come
on-line. But when someone sends a telegram, is it encrypted to both AW's
server and to the citizen in which it was sent to? I'm guessing (hoping)
that it is encrypted while being sent to AW's "t-gram" server, encrypted
when being sent to the citizen in which it was intended for, and then
the AW browser decrypts it so the citizen can read it. I'm too lazy to
go run a packetsniffer and find out. =) Can anyone shed any light on
this?

I'm just curious about AW's security. Is there anything wrong with being
curious? I'm sure you've been curious numerous times while creating
bots, KAH. It seems that many companies and programmers either do too
little testing or seem to make too little effort in their program(s)
with regards to a security standpoint. I know people that send world
passwords, privilege passwords, etc. all the time via telegrams to other
citizens and was just wondering if messages being sent were encrypted in
some form instead of being sent in plain text.
