Gravity

Sep 11, 2002, 10:27pm
AW is not a game? There are many game worlds. :) And many games you can play
in non-game worlds. And autowalk would still be nice for long treks into the
vast reaches of worlds like AW where there is so much to explore. And each
additional feature added to the AWB is a plus and allows people to make it
what they want of it.

Maximum Visiblity field in World Server

Sep 9, 2002, 8:51am
I'd like a maximum visiblity to set in world server settings. I assume I can
set this as a fog value, but I'd still like to have a max vis field.

AW Version checking

Sep 22, 2002, 10:26pm
With the addition of new features and the fact that not everyone may be
using the same browser, could some sort of browser version checking be done?
Lets say someone is somehow still using v3.2 of the browser, they decide to
go into a world with Terrain turned on... what are they going to see? A
bunch of objects floating in the air? Or, lets say someone using the 3.3
browser goes into a world with 3.4 features like water and clouds, they
won't miss the clouds much, but they sure will wonder why that boat is
floating in the middle of the air without the water showing up.

Possible solutions might be an informational message being broadcast by the
world server informing the citizen that certain features used in said world
will not be displayed because of the browser they are using. Or perhaps if
someone is using an old browser the citizen could get a broadcast message
stating they can't enter the world without upgrading to vX.X Or, perhaps a
water and ground alternate method could be added to the server... say you
use 3.2 of the browser and you come into a world with Terrain, they might
see an alternate ground object instead of the terrain, and all 3.3+ users
would only see the terrain. Same for water, if water were turned on in a 3.4
world and the user is using 3.3 or less, an alternate water(flat rwx or some
such) could be shown to 3.3 or less browsers.

Just pondering. Any thoughts?

Re: Water is not accurate

Oct 19, 2002, 1:04am
OK geesh. A lot of discussion has gone on here about water. But in an AW
situation, I'd like to try and recreate water without a lot of math and
special effects. Simply put, go jump in the ocean and see how far you can
see. Depends on what area of the ocean you are in, yes. Water in AW is more
than likely being used for SEA water... oceans. So, lets consider in a
future version of AWB that we allow for different fog values for under water
than we have in air... above the water. Now, this gives you the ability to
create clear bluegreen seawater like around some tropical island, crystal
clear bluish icelandic water and dark green water like you find off the
coast of California, or red tides, etc...

Now, if you want to talk about refraction and reflection, fine... go for it
:) I'd love to see a beam of stray light under the water, and the facets of
the waves on the surface, and it's be killer to have a reflection of the sun
and clouds on the surface of the water. You can think of a hundred things
you could add and make water a hog. :P My original post on this subject just
asked for foggier water... i.e 2 values for minimum and maximum under water
fog values satifies my request :))

Now, if you want to see some computer water that totally kills me, check out
the new seawater in DAoC when the expansion comes out. or better yet, get a
Morrowind CD and check out how they did the water on that ocean. Totally
cool, and I'd love to duplicate either in my AW worlds.

Cap CPU Usage by Framerate

Fer gosh sakes, why do you need 90fps? 30 is enough. :P

I could go for PNG! No question. Not JP2 though, not yet please. :)

Collision Detection

Nov 6, 2002, 12:44am
[View Quote] LOL, I agree. I've actually somehow managed to pass through supposedly solid
walls... not 2 walls side by side. In NewAW there is a jail I got stuck
in... well, I was put there in a moment of jest... and I actually
slide(facing backwards) against the rear wall and fell out. Grimm seemed to
stare at me and wondered how I did it, he went inside and tried to duplicate
it but didn't. Explain this one :)

Fonts on Signs

Nov 6, 2002, 12:41am
Some signs are clearer than others. I'm totally with the font idea, but not
everyone has the same fonts though most windows users do share a common set.
I do know you can add fonts with the browser or even have browser only fonts
if they elected to go that way. Kinda like the DOS days of 8x8 fonts etc...

I think the clarity of the existing font is based on the x y ratio. I have
some signs that won't take text well at all... the anti-aliasing just makes
the text look horrible... but on some other signs the text is quite crisp.

Rights windows

Nov 6, 2002, 12:37am
I'm sure this has been asked for many times before. :)

I'm quickly running out of space to add more rights in a world I run. In
about a week I won't be able to add more, but I can easily double the number
of people I need to give rights to. Adding people daily.

Does anyone have another solution until AW decides to extend this?

Terrain splatter/blending

Apr 20, 2003, 4:48pm
Right now when you activate terrain in a world, you get the option to select
a texture for each tile. If you want any blending to take place between
tiles side by side, you have to go into a graphics editor and blend the
textures together. Due to jpeg compression, you often end up with slight
difference between tiles as they blend. In any case, my wishlist item would
be to let AW do the blending for us. This is something that takes place in
games all the time. I doubt the current browser could easily be modified to
do this, but I know it's not impossible. I am currently beta testing a sony
game that uses blending and they talk about it as if its easy for them to
prevent tiling on the terrain because they will be changing it. I don't know
if this is a built in feature of some video chip sets tho. They are
supporting only Radeon, Geforce and 1 Matrox card and requiring DirectX9

Proposal: AW2

Apr 20, 2003, 4:59pm
I am proposing that a new project to develope AW2 be explored which would
require a complete rewrite of the browser from ground zero using the latest
in technology and lack of backward compatibility. Requiring the most recent
DirectX, CPU(P3 or better processor), video(Geforce2+/Radeon 9000+) and
OS(Windows XP/2000)

I am proposing that AW2 run along side AW1 and that AW1 not be dropped or
abandoned until such time as AW people migrate from one system to the other
in suffient numbers as to warrant abandoning it

I would also propose that Contact lists be mutual between AW1 and AW2 as to
not abandon communication between users in either system.

I would further propose that if this topic is at all debated in this forum
that a respected reader of these newsgroups be elected as secretary to keep
track of the debate and list the proposals and ideas for AW2 in an up to
date features/requirements list to be reposted and updated twice monthly or
as required.

I nominate Technozeus for that position.

Respectfully

Changing Skybox opacity

May 22, 2003, 10:23pm
I would like the ability to change the opacity of a skybox via world
attributes and thus use my X1 bot with a script to do so as well.

Terrain again...

Mar 9, 2006, 1:00am
No, you are not asking too much.

Currently waiting on the new 4.1 browser, and I am holding off on making any
new wishes to the terrain editing and features. Quite some time ago I played
a little game called Star Wars Galaxies. I was in beta, and durring that
time I made a wish that has not happened yet. I wanted to be able to assign
a texture to an area, and have it blend in with its neighbor... similar to
what SWG does. Been a couple of years since asked and I do not play SWG
anymore for reasons I won't go into here, but it had some very inovative
ideas. I'm no programmer, but based on my current knowledge, I think making
my wish come true is likely but only if someone has incentive to actually
program it. Same with your wishlist item... mine is a subset of your wish I
think. I took a look at the website you linked, and I feel that AW could be
programmed with something somewhat like the pictures I saw, but at the price
of a little lag. From my understanding of these things though, most games
that have similar or better terrain do so at the price of other features
and/or using tricks and using limits on the characters abilities. Such as
limiting the area the player can enter, thus hiding areas. Characters in
games don't fly like in AW, so many artifacts we see that also exist in
games can't be seen. Characters are often pathed in games thus limiting what
they can see. Doing this on the fly while allowing the freedom of movement
we expect in AW may not be wholely possible with the cpu's, memory and gpu's
we currently have without making some very significant reprogramming of the
browser towards a particular model of GPU. Such as concentrating the AW
browser on the nVidia 6800+ gpu set. Which I certainly would not mind, but a
lot of other people would. :P

I know it's been a year since your post, but I thought I'd add my 2 cents.
Someone else have a nickel they can add?

AW Should Mail World Owners of World Server Updates

Jan 15, 2006, 2:17am
Certainly would be a nice idea. I just checked the website, and I do have
the current server running, however noticed something else... the admin.exe
tool is build 16 that comes with build 69 of the server, but you can also
download build 17 seperately.

I can't tell the difference between the two admin tools however except that
build 16 is 76,800 bytes and last modified Wednesday, June 16, 2004, 5:59:14
PM and that build 17 is 102,400 bytes and last modified Saturday, March 26,
2005, 2:12:08 AM. <--- looks like some late night programming.

I was hoping my "wishlist" items had been added before I ever asked... since
we're talking about a 25k increase. Oh well. :)

AW Should Mail World Owners of World Server Updates

Jan 15, 2006, 10:54pm
Well, I'm hoping... that someone working for AWI still reads these posts....
and ... well, adds these easy little tweaks to their to-do/future/wishlist.

When it comes to uni's, if I read about the one time charges correctly, any
major upgrades would involve an upgrade fee, I would assume that emails
would be sent out to all the uni owners to be informed of the next major
upgrade to 4.1, etc. ... for the very least it could potentially bring in
new income.

Now, I've been running a world server off and on for the last 6 years. I
definitely recall getting email from AWI every month... at least the
newsletter... that stopped... and I also remember getting some emails about
server updates... especially about the server updates that they wanted to
require an upgrade to because of security issues.

But you know, with limited staff, activities at AWI probably had to be
reduced. Only so much a handful of people can do I suppose.

Now... another wishlist item could be that when the server is restarted,
it's build/version number be compared to a number on the uni which could
then popup a notice that there is a newer version available. Same for the
admin tool. I'm sure it's doable, but maybe not profitable timewise.

My wishlist

Feb 19, 2006, 8:09pm
1. Feature creep will be eliminated from the universe.
2. The new version of AW gets released sooner than later.

:P

programmers

Feb 20, 2006, 10:02pm
> textures from a texture or models path.

My answer may not be what you are asking, but, if you have FTP access to
your path, say with WSFTP, clicking on the DIRInfo button will open up
notepad with the entire list of your current open remote directory. You can
then save that text file anyway you like.

or

If you happen to have your Path downloaded to your local hard drive, just go
into DOS/Command Prompt and go into the directory you want to list then type

dir >filename.txt

that will create a directory listing piped into the file named filename.txt
but you'll have to edit that file to remove all the excess junk.

Hope it helps

Terrain prefix

Feb 22, 2006, 12:25am
A lurker here in the newsgroups wants me to post the following wish of his:

My wish is that aw lets you do a terrain prefix toggle (blank = "terrain" so
that current ones aren't affected)

that way you could have terrain_winter0
terrain_summer0... etc

you couldn't post my wish to the wishlist, could you?

^_^

Hmm... I need a lady

Feb 22, 2006, 4:08am
OK OK... this will sound really stupid... I admit it in the beginning.

I want a relationship with a female of appropriate age in the AW universe.
ROFL. ok ok... This is the wishlist forum.... so... if you have a problem
with my wish, go suck an egg or something. ;) I've had a couple of
relationships with verifiable females in the AW universe... none of which
has been successful. I won't go into details. :) But here is what I want...
1) a lady who understands that AW is not negotiable!!!!(i.e. the last 2
ladies said I had to give it up or else... haha! I gave them up) and 2) they
are as much invested in AW as I am.

The chance that anyone in AW is female(20% chance) and that you like AW as
much as I(10% chance) is quite unlikely.... but if you're out there...
gawd... speak up... or I'm gonna be alone for the rest of my life...
which... is acceptable... but undesired. ;)

Hmm... I need a lady

Feb 22, 2006, 12:34pm
> Totally pointless would be more my description.

I know Mark, who is this guy writing all this pointless drivel? Make him
shut up please! You're good at that.

Hmm... I need a lady

Feb 23, 2006, 12:50am
Well, if I lost 50 pounds I'd look damn awesome and I can pretend to be
rich. As for being bossed around... sorry... can't help ya out there...
see... in my world I am always right... even when I'm wrong. See why the
ladies love me? :P~~~~

Static SEQ's

Mar 9, 2006, 12:41am
Well, I wish we could have SEQ's work until they are canceled deliberately.
As in the example of a SIT seq. Click on a chair/etc and click on the SIT
button... and you remain seated... possibly with some movement while sitting
like checking nails, looking to the left, etc... and not standing until your
SIT seq is terminated by the user... maybe by pressing another SEQ button...
like STAND.

Trial World Reset for 4.1

Mar 21, 2006, 2:38am
[View Quote] Can it work that way? You have to have a cit account to buy a world, can you
then cancel or expire that one and use the bonus cit? If so, what happens
when the world becomes 1 year old? How do you renew the world since it's
under the old cits number? :P

Duck Key

Mar 25, 2006, 2:30am
Although I agree, some might say that it could be added with a SEQ.

One might expand that each world should have the ability to have their own
HOT keys... so that an RPG world could implement a D)uck and J)ump key SEQ
for all avatars for that particular world... and say, another gentler world
could have a S)kip and C)rawl key for the same actions if they so choose. :)
Just my 3 cents...

Automatic AFK mode

Every game and chat interface that I know of has this... why not AW? :)

Add contact by citizen number

Mar 25, 2006, 2:24am
I totally agree... with the abiltiy to change names on the fly, you really
aught to be able to add contacts by user number, and not just by the current
users name. :)
[View Quote]

manage my accounts

Mar 25, 2006, 2:22am
I would like the ability to manage all of my user accounts from one console.

I have several worlds, and I have 1 console to manage them all. I do not
have a console to manage all the accounts that I have.

I've got at least 3 normal user accounts, and at least 9 bonus accounts from
worlds I've licensed. However, I have little control over these accounts
except for my memory and ability to write down certain details.

I've allowed friends and relatives to use some of these accounts... and they
are free to add their own email address' to these user numbers, causing me
the inability to recover them when I want them back. I have in the past had
to email AWI in order to RESET the email address so that I might recover
them. However, this really is a waste of AWI's time. There should be a
method by which the original license holder should be able to take control
of the accounts for which they pay for without having to contact AWI
personal.

SEQ's not by avatar, but universal to all

Mar 25, 2006, 4:22am
Expanding on an idea earlier...

Have SEQ's not dependant on a particular avatar, but dependant on a hot
key... with some ability to still have specific seqs for specific avatars.

All avatars should have the ability to jump... but not avatars have the
ability to wave... some don't have arms... and some have wings, so they
aught to be able to flap them...

grr, I am just saying. :)

AxisAlignment xyz

May 7, 2006, 3:19pm
I would really like it if AxisAlignment xyz were implemented on a per clump
basis.

Currently the browser only supports AxisAlignment "zorientx" and "zorienty"
which do the same thing. Create a facer, however you can fly over a facer
and it will dissapear until you are facing it again. Also, AxisAlignment
only works on the whole object, not on a clump level.

Why? You have only to buy a copy of Oblivion from bethsoft.com($60 granted
no cheap) to find out how the benefits of such a command would have on the
grass, plant and tree models people could make. On the small chance it
already was working this way, I tried modeling a tree and only applying
AxisAlignment to one clump of leaves... and it didn't have my desired
effect, the whole tree became a facer. lol, like it was a treant following
my every move and waiting to pounce on me. Could be useful for a horror or
holloween world.

Look at this picture: http://www.darkestdestiny.com/obliv01B.jpg
With the exception of the tree trunks, rocks and terrain, that whole
picture, every leaf and blade of grass is just a flat facer object. You can
see the patterns if you look closely. AW could potentially do this if one of
the programmers felt worthy of the challenge. The only thing in that scene
that aw could not do would be the shadows and bump maps, and I can live with
that, at least until 2015. ;)

Quot: "Description

This command sets the axis alignment for the current object. It can be one
of "none", "zorientx", "zorienty", and "xyz".
Beginning with version 3.0, Active Worlds now only distinguishes between
axis alignment or no axis alignment. Thus, "zorientx" and "zorienty" are
considered equivalent (i.e. axis alignment is on), and "xyz" is not
supported. The effect of turning on axis alignment anywhere in the object is
that the entire object is always rotated to face the viewer; it becomes what
is sometimes called a "facer". The trees and plants in AlphaWorld are
examples of facers. "
