Bigger Better Path Hosting Available

Well, with my screen resolution, eyeballs, and looking at the page in
Mozilla and IE, I do see that they are bit bigger in the beginning. The
source just confirms that the page is using the small caps format.

copyright violation

Oct 13, 2003, 3:40am
If you want to see if Andras really did download parts of (or your
entire) Web site, you can simply check your Web server logs for his IP
address. If you don't know how to get his IP address (since both of you
are world hosts), I can't help you.

Since Web pages are in a digital format and are usually in an
unencrypted state, it is very simple to save them locally on your own
hard drive. Isn't there a feature in Internet Explorer that let's you
read Web pages off-line? There are also countless programs out there
that allow you to download all of the HTML, text, graphics, sounds, etc.
of a Web site (Teleport Pro being an example) and save the contents to
your own computer. You can block a great deal of them by using
robots.txt and .htaccess files, but you can never guarantee that someone
won't fake a referrer field or use another method to get by.

You can use one of those JavaScript HTML encrypter programs, but people
with JavaScript disabled won't be able to see your site. You could also
digitally watermark each and every one of your graphic files on your
site, if you really wanted to. Simply put: while there are ways to deter
digital theft, nothing is really foolproof. Also, in the United States
and in other countries, there are fair use laws in place that allow
others to use copyrighted material in certain ways (usually for
personal, noncommercial use).

While it may be against your site's Terms of Use or copyright/trademark
notice (if you even have one), I don't believe it is illegal to simply
have a copy of your site stored on a person's computer. Heck, why do
think there is a caching mechanism built into Web browsers? Oh, that's
another thing, you can force browsers that visit your site not to cache
it if you are really paranoid about theft.

What it comes down to is the intent. If Andras sets up a new Web site
saying ill things about your service or customers or tries to go off and
pass your site as his own, then that may be grounds for legal action.
But simply downloading your Web site to his local hard drive for his own
personal use is another matter entirely. If you want to even the score,
go to his Web site and download it to your system. Now you are even. Can
we stop this now?

New Fountains

Nov 3, 2003, 3:48pm
The fountains, like almost all of your objects, look very nice, Paul.
They would fit well with the Roman-style 3D homepage (I forget its
proper name).

I do think that taking screen shots or putting pictures/thumbnails of
the objects on a Web site would be a good alternative (especially for
dial-up users).

PROXIMA Teaser Video

Nov 4, 2003, 3:16am
I made a four-minute "teaser video" (actually, it's more like a slide
show of various screen shots) about the gaming world Proxima by
UberMonkey and TonyM. Uber has been working on both the bot that runs
Proxima and most of its buildings for ages, and I wanted to show off
some of the sections of the world.

The video is available in QuickTime and Windows Media Video formats. You

PROXIMA Teaser Video

Nov 4, 2003, 1:59pm
Glad you liked it, Bowen. I know I should have put more "fades" or
transitions between the screen shots to spice things up, but with the
software I use, it would have taken a fairly long time to do. Plus,
without them, it cuts down on the file size and allowed me to lower the
frames per second of the video (again, less bloat).

I was originally thinking of capturing video direct from AW and making
some movie clips instead of just the still shots, but I was pressed for
time. I might do that in the future. Remember, its a teaser and not a
trailer. ;)

My rant...

Nov 5, 2003, 7:18pm
What about a way to "hack" the terrain (for AlphaWorld only) to move it
down so it would be "level" with the current AlphaWorld ground
plane/floor? People that want terrain could get it and it wouldn't go
through or overlap on current buildings.

My rant...

Nov 6, 2003, 1:12am
Well, I remember that there were rumors going around that NewAW was
using some sort of special world server or had plug-in support...so
anything is possible.

If you think about it, AlphaWorld's property database is over 1 GB in
size. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to change a line or two of code in
the world server software to move the terrain to the proper place. The
problem would be the time needed to make the changes to the property
data. I think it takes a large chunk of time to do a simple propdump.

Could it be that your company has several employees using the DSL line
at once, saturating its bandwidth while you are the only person using
your satellite connection at home? Something similar happened at my old
school. They had a T1 connection, but since so many students were using
it simultaneously, the "real world" speed was closer to dial-up. Traffic
shaping technology and quality of service priority routing can help in
some cases, though.

URGENT NEWS BULITEN FOR ENTIRE ACTIVE WORLDS COMMUNITY

Nov 22, 2003, 4:35am
The most likely cause of your pop-ups is the Windows Messenger service
(not to be confused for the MSN Messenger program) if you use Windows
2000 or XP. The main purpose of the messenger service is to send
"messages" (for lack of a better word) to other users on a LAN. For
example, if I wanted to make a pop-up message that says "Hi there"
appear on a computer called Jim, I would go to Start --> Run --> type in
"cmd" (no quotes), and then "net send Jim Hi there" (again, no quotes).
If the computer called Jim is turned on, is connected to my LAN, and has
the messenger service running, the user should be able to see the
pop-up. People can (and do) use this as a "dumbed down" version of
instant messaging.

However, as people like to find new ways to use things (especially to
annoy people or to make money), so-called "messenger spammers" have
surfaced that send unsolicited messages to numerous people. They often
(like in your case) try to promote a product that supposedly stops you
from receiving the very pop-ups they are sending you. I believe the FTC
is trying to crackdown more on this type of activity.

Microsoft has said that in Windows XP Service Pack 2, the Messenger
service will be set to off by default. But since you want to stop your
pop-ups now, here is how to turn off the messenger service:

1. Sign on as an administrator (if you aren't already)
2. Go into the Control Panel (generally Start --> Settings --> Control
Panel)
3. Double-click on Administrative Tools
4. Double-click on Services
5. Scroll down the list of services until you see one marked as "Messenger"
6. If the service is running (which it probably is), left click on it to
highlight it. Then right-click on it and unclick on Stop. It may take a
moment for it to shut down.
7. Right-click on it (while it is still highlighted) and unclick on
Properties
8. Finally, change the Startup type to "Disabled", press Apply, then hit OK

I also recommend that install and use these other programs:

ZoneAlarm Free Firewall
http://www.zonelabs.com

SpywareBlaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Ad-Aware Free (Standard Edition)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Spybot Search & Destroy
http://security.kolla.de

One last thing: by default, AW uses Internet Explorer as its Web browser
and to download objects, avatars, etc. Double check your IE cookies and
security settings (especially the ActiceX settings).

Have fun!

I believe that only the community group is moderated, the others are not
(well, the beta group is limited access, so that's an exception).
However, there are numerous other forums and discussion groups on
various Web sites that others can post to if they don't feel comfortable
posting here in the "official" groups. For example, the SW City Forums,
Andras' Newsgroups, the ImaBot Forum, etc.

E N Z O usually deletes any post within a day or so where someone
mentions the words "E N Z O please delete" in the thread. And you can
always call the AW offices or e-mail one of the AW staff if you have a

PLEASE HELP A!!CT HAS BEEN WIPED!!!!

Dec 1, 2003, 8:36pm
I don't know the full story (nor do I care to know) about what happened
recently with the A!!CT "wiping." But I just wanted to say that I have a
backup of A!!CT (which includes the registry, propdump, attributes, and
terrain data) dated 7/17/03 if MrBruce would ever need it.

How did I get a copy of the backup? No, I didn't hack anything -- I gave
a free hosting trial to A!!CT a few months ago and a member/helper of
A!!CT sent it to me.

Whatever the cause of the wipe, it is best to manually backup your world
at least once a week and have the world server automatically back it up
at least once per day. Also keep in mind that an average A!!CT propdump
is about 20-25 MB.

Welcome to the newsgroups, Matt!

You could try your hand at bingo to get your bot limit increased (I won
an increase of one to my limit a long time ago :). Besides that, I think
it costs $20 USD like Fett said to get it raised by three.

What do you plan to do that needs more than three bots running at once?
Maybe someone would let you use their priv. password and you could split
the limit between two or more cits.

IceFlare Ultimate Object Path

Jan 29, 2004, 12:40pm
Well, if you live in the US and are doing business or taking orders
without using your own real name (for example, as "IceFlare Network"
instead of "Mr. John Doe"), the very least you *legally* need to do is
file for a "doing business as" (or DBA), also referred to as a
fictitious name. The average cost ranges anywhere from $20 to $80
depending upon which state you live in. Any income you get from your
business will then be taxed along with your own personal taxes if you
have a valid DBA.

$6.95 Too Much?

Jan 29, 2004, 12:45pm
I don't usually reply to The Lady's posts, but I actually think that
$6.95 per month is pretty darn cheap compared to other VR programs. Last
I checked, There and A Tale in the Desert as well as Second Life. Most
people spend more than $6.95 a month for coffee alone, going to movies,
and many other things.

Builderz
http://www.3dhost.net

[View Quote] > Many people are complaining that $6.95 per month is too much to pay for AW.
> How much do you think is fair to pay for a citizenship?

$6.95 Too Much?

Jan 30, 2004, 1:22pm
No, I can't say that I'm a mind reader and I don't know what everyone
spends or doesn't spend each month. I was just trying to make a
generalization. If you or someone else can't afford $6.95 per month (or
the yearly AW citizen fee), then that's that, plain and simple. You can
either try and win a cit extension at a contest like Bingo, ask for some
money to borrow, or let your cit expire and use the money for something
else.

I was just trying to point out that "a lot" of people spend *much more*
than $6.95 per month for other things that they do in their lives and
that in my opinion, the AW citizenship fee is less expensive than other
VR programs out there. I know that some children get an allowance of
more than $6.95 per week, while on the other hand, I know a person or
two who can't even afford to put food on the table.

I never said everyone could afford it, but I'd like to point out that
the exchange rate in certain countries makes it easier to afford in some
places than others. But again, that only matters to certain people.

Personally, I don't drink coffee either and haven't been to the movies
in months. I also never mentioned anything about the stock market. If
you want some interesting opinions of the stock market and why "the poor
get poorer," I invite you to check out http://www.richdad.com.

I don't sell hosting to become rich, either, Paul. In fact, I've lost a
great deal of my customers/income due to lots of users leaving AW, AW
price increases, or users not renewing their world due to cost or "boredom."

names

Jan 30, 2004, 2:56pm
I could see this work if you just wanted to add one letter at end of
your name.

For example, Builderz would be my main username but there could be an
option in the settings to add one extra letter after your name. You
could enter "e" or "o" into this, and your name would then look like
Builderz o or Builderz e or whatever.

Maybe the extra letter could be in a different color? On second thought,
that would probably look pretty odd.

But there could be some form of abuse with this. What if I wanted to
change my name to Builderz PK and pretend to be a PK in front of a bunch
of newbies? That's why I think the limit should only be one letter and
nothing more.

People could be walking around with things like Security, CEO, AW, etc.
after their names and try to cause some havoc -- or just a bunch of
random characters at the end of their names.

Another problem would trying to telegram the person. Could you enter in
their cit name with the extra letter (like Builderz o) or do you need to
telegram their main cit username without the letter (Builderz) for the
gram to go through? Would the uni make an "alias" and link it to your
main cit name while you had the extra letter so you could telegram both
your main name and/or the extra letter? Lots to think about with this...

Another idea would to just have an icon next to your name (like the AFK
icon) that shows whether you are married, engaged, single, etc.

Most games that aren't copy protected in some way will allow you to do
this. But games that use a proprietary format of audio, copy the sounds
to your computer hard drive in another format, or use some method of
copy protection probably won't play straight from your CD player or
