Bowen, the day that AW bots can run smoother and faster on a Linux
system than on Windows is the day I'll move one of my Windows servers to Linux. :) I haven't tried software emulation, but I imagine it isn't so hot with bots. Outlook is known to block certain types of attachments (such as EXE
files). I would look in the help file to see how to change the settings, since I haven't used Outlook in years. I would also take a look at Thunderbird. It does almost everything Outlook does, but is more secure (and free). http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/ Don't let the version number scare you. I haven't had any problems with it yet, even though it hasn't reached official version one status. Builderz http://www.3dhost.net [View Quote] World NamesApr 30, 2004, 1:46pm
One of the owners can call AWI, pay a fixed fee, and have their world
name changed. I don't think AWI has any special code that determines if two names are similar or not. If either of the world owners has a trademark on their world name, then AWI can legally shut down the other world with the similar name. If not, then the two owners will just have to work it our or let it be. Builderz http://www.3dhost.net [View Quote] > Hi folks. I don't see anything wrong with the idea. I know when I first starting
out with building that having the ability to use a service such as yours would have been nice. If you plan to offer it for free, go ahead -- no one is stopping you. If you plan to charge for it later on, you can do that as well. Citizens/tourists will dictate whether or not they will be willing to pay for your service. If no one pays, then you either need to market your service better or stop providing it. Simple as that. So I say try it and see what comes of it. Sharon,
It seems that you, as well as others, are concerned about what Seiya is doing and/or has done in AW (that may be an understatement). Well, why don't you and everyone else look at these two pages to see what rules Seiya has broken: http://www.activeworlds.com/community/terms.asp http://www.activeworlds.com/community/conduct.asp Then simply contact AWI about it. But don't just send one e-mail and say "AWI didn't respond!" Call AWI on the phone, fax them, e-mail them, telegram them, write them a letter in a mail -- do all of this. You can also contact as many PeaceKeepers as you can get a hold of. Fair enough? I don't really care if you contacted AWI in the past and they did or didn't do anything about it. Contact them again! Contact them until something is done. I have many friends who get lackluster replies from AWI, so you aren't the only one. Then you will get a reply and hopefully Seiya will be taken care of if he/she/it has violated any rules. Also, use the built-in features of your browser to block join requests, files transfers, and anything else you can think of from Seiya. If you own a world, use a bot to eject Seiya if you want. If you are tech-savvy, you could also block Seiya's entire IP block/subnet for 30 days or something. Just some ideas... Studies can be twisted to say whatever a company or organization wants
the outcome to be. How many times on the news do you hear that it is healthy to eat so and so, and then a week or a month later they say, "Oh, we goofed. Some new study says so and so is now cancerous" or something. I'm not disagreeing with what you said, as I watch the Discovery channel and other health shows and documentaries, etc. But I believe it is also a known fact that if you tell a child NOT to do something, they may want to do it even MORE. And there is also reverse psychology. You can't ignore that. If you tell a child "don't do drugs," but don't fully explain it to them or show them what can happen, they don't understand the danger may take them anyway due to peer pressure or some other reason. Builderz http://www.3dhost.net [View Quote] good post BROMay 6, 2004, 8:43pm
This should have been a reply to an older thread, not a new post. Gor is
*not* synonymous with pornography. I host Gor worlds and not all of them have an adult theme with pictures of naked people scattered everywhere. While I don't practice Gor (far from it), I respect Gor worlds. Worlds have content ratings for a reason and most Gor worlds have an age check bot/script when you enter (yes, I know you can get by these, but at least the world owners try). Builderz http://www.3dhost.net good post BROMay 7, 2004, 1:54am
How else would you handle it, JerMe? Your thoughts?
Builderz http://www.3dhost.net [View Quote] > What a pathetic attempt. good post BROMay 10, 2004, 1:44am
Just for the record, so you know where I stand, I actually had a clause
in my hosting Terms of Service that stated that Gor worlds must remain private at all times. But I took that clause out, one of the reasons being that I assumed it would cause an uproar, much like all of the threads Seiya's actions have caused here in the newsgroups. Some say those that practice Gor should all "hang out" in their own universe. Well, on the flip side, couldn't the same be said about almost any group? Would it be fair for everyone between the ages of 13 to 19 could only "hang out" in their own teen universe and that those 21 or older had to "hang out" in another? No, of course not. I'm not sure if anyone here besides me remembers a galaxy that was started years ago called PeaceWorld. I believe it had a G or PG theme and only had one fairly large world in it. Maybe that needs to be revived again. If a Gor world disables tourist access, uses a bot age check script that asks for age and year of birth, uses a mature rating of R or above and mentions that the world is of an adult theme in the welcome message...I think that's plenty protection to keep "wanderers" out. Some Gor worlds do all of the above (and even log all chat on top of it) and some may not do any of the things I mentioned. If everyone is so concerned about Gor worlds, go petition to AWI to add a special clause to their official terms/conduct rules and be done with it. Really, if you are so concerned, stop posting in the newsgroups and contact AWI directly or the caretakers of the Gor worlds you dislike and try to work something out with them. Or stop talking about it *do* something about it, like sign up as a PK, become an official "AW policy maker," pick up the phone and call AWI to make your voice heard to an employee, or *something.* If a child, pre-teen, or teenager wants to access adult material or pornography, they don't need to use AW to do it. Do you want the AW startup screen to display a disclaimer that reads something like "We aren't responsible for what you see here. You may be offended, be exposed to adult content, etc."? The Internet is a global place and there are products and software available that filter out certain things like vulgar words, too much skin being show on the computer screen, etc. There are also programs that will prevent a person from revealing their home address, phone number, SSN, etc. on the Internet (or filter it out if it somehow does get sent). I encourage everyone that is concerned to use common sense and do some of their own research. Think for a moment before you act and use the great power of the thing between your ears called a brain. I was told that I had to fax them some documents when I wanted to change
my business name on PayPal (no other account information, just the name on the account). Of course, I didn't want to send them the info they requested because a) it was just a name change, everything else was the same and b) they had most of the information already on file. So what I ended up doing was looking at the eBay message boards (eBay owns PayPal, BTW) and tracked down the person at PayPal that was in charge of customer service and sent him an e-mail. The next day the business name on my account was changed over without me having to fax them a thing. The only other issue I had with PayPal was two chargebacks of a bot I used to sell in the past and they couldn't get my money back because it was a digital product instead of a physical one with a tracking/shipping code. I was just wondering if anyone in the AW community does professional or
commercial texture design, models, or 3D animation or uses Vue d'Esprit (http://www.e-onsoftware.com), Bryce 3D, or Poser (http://www.curiouslabs.com). You can make some very great 3D stills, photo-realistic images, and animations with these tools. Some people make stills and sell them to magazines, others have done broadcast quality work, and I've even seen great online films made as well. I've been looking at some of the models made for Poser (http://www.daz3d.com) and looking at the galleries on sites like Renderosity.com and I'm amazed at the quality of 3D work out there. For those that are interested, you may want to do some research on these programs. Builderz http://www.3dhost.net Somewhat OT: Professional 3DMay 21, 2004, 2:39pm
Yes, I have Poser, Bryce, and Vue...and while I've seen some really
incredible work done with them, I think they have a very large learning curve for the average user. At least they are easier to learn than Lightwave or 3DS. For those that may need something with a bit less of a learning curve, check out Carrara at http://www.eovia.com/home.jsp Builderz http://www.3dhost.net [View Quote] Somewhat OT: Professional 3DMay 21, 2004, 2:45pm
Of course you should use Wings, trueSpace, etc. for AW. I was talking
more along the lines of professional 3D graphics or "prosumer" 3D graphics. While Lightwave, 3DS, and Maya are some of the top 3D modeling/rendering programs, there are loads of people on the 'Net making great looking artwork, animations, and models using the software I mentioned in my first post. Some AW users that are really interested in 3D, but may not know where to look, may be interested in it.
