Here is a great example of what can be made using Carrara:

I haven't used 3DS Max, but I bought an old version of Lightwave (for a
discount) a long time ago and it came with a 500 page manual and I had no idea how to use it. LOL. I find Poser, Bryce, etc. easier to use. Generally speaking, Bryce, Poser, and Vue all excel at different things. But if you use them together, you can make some real masterpieces. Bryce was originally the best at landscapes and trees, Poser is good at posing models and doing simple animation, but Vue is now just about as good as Bryce with landscapes and with an add-on, you can import tons of great Poser models and animate almost anything without too much trouble. For some awesome examples of what can be done with Poser and Vue, check out: http://www.belino.net/v050304/index.php3 And I think these two movies were made using mostly Poser: http://www.daredevilfilms.net Builderz [View Quote] > psh, 3ds max is really easy to learn, just takes alot of time :) and when > you get the basics covered, the tutorials and user reference that comes with > it is a great reference :) > oh, bryce is only for rendering i thought? and isn't vue only for > landscapes, and poser only for, emm, avatar type things? :) Somewhat OT: Professional 3DMay 21, 2004, 5:11pm

Builderz There there...May 22, 2004, 2:09pm
At first I thought this was fake, but then I saw it mentioned on
http://www.lifeinthere.com/news/archive/04/05/0521_changes/changes.htm as well. I have to first say, "Wow!" O_O Then I have to say, "Wait, I remember reading in an article that the U.S. DoD or Army wanted to use There's technology for military applications." So I guess they are just going to be selling the license or "platform" to others to make the big bugs and forgetting about the community. How nice. :/ I bet everyone who spent the time buying Therebucks and beta testing are very happy. Maybe in a week or two they'll realize the huge backlash and make another announcement. But this certainly doesn't look good for them. Now is the time to promote AW on any There related sites/forums! :) Builderz http://www.3dhost.net There there...May 24, 2004, 12:59am
They usually don't post these types of messages as press releases, they
post in the There forum (or whatever There calls it). I believe only members can read the forum posts. I didn't bother to look. Builderz http://www.3dhost.net [View Quote] 20 FREE AVATARSMay 23, 2004, 6:46pm

Very nice looking objects (and your site design looks good, too).
I see that you recently bought the domain. Now you just need to work on building incoming links and boosting your Google PageRank to get some search engine traffic and buyers. Builderz http://www.3dhost.net CY Results?May 24, 2004, 3:02pm
You need to get a grip on reality (not virtual reality). If someone
talks smack about you, either do something about it or ignore it. There are plenty of features built into the browser that can help with this. I have an exit pop-up on one of my websites asking why people don't stay on the site (why they leave) and I get some very nasty replies from immature people, but the ones who give honest replies and feedback really help me to change and improve my site and make it better. The CY's aren't like the Grammy's or the Emmy's. People nominate themselves for silly things and some of the real talent doesn't get the recognition that they deserve. I've been doing AW hosting since 1998 but not once have I won a CY award. You don't see me posting to the newsgroups saying "Why, oh why, didn't I win?" do you? No. I haven't seen any of your buildings, but I hear they are very good. Why not concentrate on making them even better and trying again at next year's CY's? Or just make your own AW awards if you want. As for what you should do, only you and your close friends/family can really help you there. Just remember to use common sense and not to get overly worked up over the little things in life. If you have an alcohol problem, then maybe you should give one of those AA meetings a try. If you are out of shape, try getting off of the computer and do some exercise. Builderz http://www.3dhost.net CY Results?May 24, 2004, 6:14pm

No, Linn, XelaG wasn't referring to America world in AW, he was
referring to the United States of America (the country). Builderz http://www.3dhost.net [View Quote] > or did you mean America world in aw? Something to make ya'll giggle ;-")May 25, 2004, 1:01am
LOL. Two comments:
1) "The grader doesn't actually have time to read all 600 papers for content, so students with good grammar and spelling get A's. Everyone else gets C's." If they grader doesn't have time to read the papers for content, how do they have the time to proofread all of the papers for grammar and spelling? 2) In case anyone didn't understand the humor, the "GRADE SCHOOL" and "OUT IN THE REAL WORLD" sections are nearly identical. :) Builderz http://www.3dhost.net Article of interestMay 25, 2004, 5:16pm
Nice find, Brant. Some comments:
1) The article just drives home the point I keep making -- AW is virtually (no pun intended) unknown to the online and offline media/press. I saw EQ, There, Second life and The Sims mentioned in the article, but no AW. AW needs to revamp http://www.activeworlds.com/info/press.asp and at least make a press release when 3.6 comes out and hype up the streaming support. How hard is it to hire someone on a site such as eLance to make you a press release, AWI? I want to see some PR action from Newburyport! 2) "A study by the game academic Nick Yee found that male players 'cross-dress' as female characters at least one-third of the time." Hmm... Now who does that remind you of? Someone here in the newsgroups? No, I must be imagining things... 3) "The U.S. military has already licensed a private chunk of There and created a simulation of the planet on it." I mentioned this a few days ago in another post. Builderz http://www.3dhost.net Lady NightHawk Stuff..May 25, 2004, 8:59pm
Welcome back! Hope you enjoy your new cable connection. Just be sure to
have, at the very least, a firewall in place. :) Builderz http://www.3dhost.net Lady NightHawk Stuff..May 26, 2004, 2:41pm
If you have a MultiNAT or dual-WAN (two WAN ports) router, you can use
more than one IP address on a single router. However, like you said, it may just be easier to buy/lease another IP address from your ISP and use it with a hub or switch. Builderz http://www.3dhost.net [View Quote] Lady NightHawk Stuff..May 26, 2004, 2:54pm
Here are some suggestions for you:
1) On the computer that already has ZoneAlarm Pro installed, update it to the latest version if your license hasn't expired. There have been many enhancements to it in recent months. 2) On the second computer, I would disable the built-in Windows XP firewall, as it only protects you against incoming threats by default and won't protect you if a Trojan horse or other nasty program tries to send data out over the 'Net. I believe Microsoft is going to add outbound support with Windows XP Service Pack 2, but until then, you should get a better firewall. I would recommend getting ZoneAlarm Free. It has the basic features of ZoneAlarm Pro, but doesn't cost you anything. 3) For routers, like Andras said, most use UPnP nowadays, so they try to automatically detect your network settings. Generally speaking, just go with a decent name brand router like D-Link, Linksys, Netgear, etc. If you want a wireless router, make sure it has good encryption support. Also, whichever router you pick, be sure to check the manufacturer's website and update the router's firmware to the most recent version and change the default password. 4) If you want to gain a little speed boost, replace your hub with a switch. You can get them really cheap nowadays. 5) I don't have cable Internet access, but I know that some cable ISPs actually put you behind the cable company's own firewall or proxy server to help protect against malicious threats. However, even if your connection is setup this way, this won't protect you against anyone on your cable node trying to probe or break into your computers. 6) Go to http://grc.com and have fun reading. :) 7) Be sure to also get a good anti-virus program that auto-updates at least once a week. You may also want to look into Spybot, Ad-Aware, SpywareBlaster to help keep spyware under control. They are all free or have free versions available. Hope that helped. Builderz http://www.3dhost.net [View Quote] > K, any suggestions? I have two puters ... the main one (mine) is a Win XP > Pro, hubby's laptop is networked via a hub (not a router yet). Builderz http://www.3dhost.net Customer Service/Support?Jun 2, 2004, 4:57pm
Maybe AWI should try and invest in a helpdesk/ticket system such as
PerlDesk (http://www.perldesk.com). There are many that are open source (free). Instead of just e-mailing them, you could go to a section on the AWI site, select which department you want to contact (billing, support, beta, etc.), select a priority rating for your issue (usually 1-5, meaning very urgent or not very important), and type in whatever problem you are having. Each request that a customer enters is called a "ticket" and can be "opened" or "closed" and thus the problems tracked. Helpdesk systems usually integrate into e-mail systems very easily, too. Depending upon the helpdesk system used, if you send an e-mail to support at activeworlds.com, it could create a ticket from your e-mail and reply automatically saying AWI has received your message and will reply within 48 hours or something. Builderz http://www.3dhost.net Customer Service/Support?Jun 2, 2004, 5:00pm
After writing that post, I just checked the AWI site and they something
similar at http://www.activeworlds.com/tech/contact.asp :) But it seems to be a custom support system/script and I don't see a priority rating (1 to 5 for example) for customer issues. Builderz http://www.3dhost.net Customer Service/Support?Jun 2, 2004, 5:08pm
You can contact AWI by phone at (978) 499-0222 or by fax at (978)
499-0221. As far as I know, the numbers aren't toll-free. As a side note, I have a toll-free voicemail number for my hosting services. Builderz http://www.3dhost.net [View Quote] > Well if I call then it costs me right? It's not toll-free is it? Tom FlaggJun 2, 2004, 4:47pm
Yes, his real name is Tom Fournier and not Tom Flagg. I just searched
through some of my (very) old e-mails and that is what he put in his signature. Builderz http://www.3dhost.net CY statues in AW no longer loadJun 2, 2004, 3:15pm

The template looks good on my system (I can't test on a higher
resolution, either). However, I agree with Byte about the text. Either change the default text to a different color (or shade) of blue or make your hyperlinks a different color than blue. A new visitor might get confused. I checked and you have a Google PageRank of zero. Get some more incoming links from other sites and submit your site to some free directories to raise your PageRank and boost your search engine rankings. Builderz http://www.3DHost.net [View Quote] > It's a pre-made template and probably isn't made for the higher than 1024 x > 768 res. Unfortunately I can't see that res so I dunno what to fix LOL.
