I'm just going to say this now before we have dozens of flames...
Please, don't reply to this thread. Please? Pretty please with sugar on top? If everyone wants to moan at this or bitch at that, please start your own forum or newsgroup and do it there, okay? *hopes there aren't six flames when he reads the newsgroups again* Builderz http://www.3DHost.net Corrupt PK's & AW the CompanyJun 28, 2004, 11:53pm
0.flames is the name of the group I believe and news://news.andras.net
is his newsgroup server. It seems that ever since AWI removed the general.discussion group all of the flames have moved into the community group. Builderz http://www.3DHost.net Corrupt PK's & AW the CompanyJun 29, 2004, 2:32am

Yes. Whenever The Lady makes a post, there seems to be many others who
either disagree (by posting insults) or think she's crazy, nutty, etc. Just do a search at her past threads and you'll see what I mean. I was just trying to break that "cycle" this one time. :) Builderz http://www.3DHost.net If you have spare time..Jul 6, 2004, 4:47am
Active Worlds televisionJul 3, 2004, 4:01pm
Correct. However, I don't think all AW TV stations will move over and
use Windows Media Streaming for various reasons. Here is a good host that does Windows Media streams: http://www.advection.net Builderz http://www.3DHost.net Active Worlds televisionJul 3, 2004, 4:06pm
Well, you can get a dedicated Windows server in a professional data
center in the U.S. for about $69 USD per month with 500 GB of bandwidth. If you want 1000 GB of bandwidth, expect to pay about $120 USD per month. And of course, there is colocation if you already have your own server. If someone has the money and the knowledge, they could setup a few Windows Media Streams on one of these servers. Builderz http://www.3DHost.net Active Worlds televisionJul 3, 2004, 9:59pm
As far as I know, the server portion to stream Windows Media content
only works on Windows. Other uses are for ASP, ColdFusion and MS SQL databases. Builderz http://www.3DHost.net A good 4th of July!Jul 3, 2004, 6:56pm

Even if you are careful about who you give your real address to,
spammers can use automated dictionary attacks to eventually find (spam) your real address. Also, depending upon the privacy policy of your e-mail provider, they may share/sell your address with third parties (other companies). Builderz http://www.3DHost.net [View Quote] > What I do is have junk addy's that I use to give to sites that do need a > legit addy, for like a confirmation email or whatever. Andras is correct. They just try and send e-mail to a bunch of e-mail
addresses at random to see if they work or not. They use one or more "dictionary files" and try to make up user names or just try and spam standard addresses likes abuse at yourdomain.com, webmaster at yourdomain.com, etc. So it might look like: sallyjane02 at whatever.com bobiscool at whatever.com andrew10 at whatever.com They can take a standard name like andrew and then combine it with the number 10 to see if it s valid address. They just keep sending and sending e-mails and the addresses that don't "bounce back" are usually real ones. Sort of like brute force password cracking in a way. Funny, I have just the opposite experience with one of my Yahoo!
accounts. I've had it for years and unchecked all of those "don't send me crap" (as you put it) boxes as soon as I knew about them and don't sign up to any opt-in newsletters, ezines, etc. Yet on my one account I have it set to filter out about 90 domains and I still have nearly 12,000 spam messages I need to sort through or delete. On another Yahoo! account with all of those things unchecked, I hardly get any spam at all. Go figure. However, on e-mail accounts on my own domain names that I host myself, I use SpamAssassin on the server side and it has greatly helped reducing spam. I didn't know the AWA, ESO, etc. were still around. Guess they went
underground or something. I have an idea that might help a bit with the newbs. Using a program called Camtasia Studio (made by TechSmith) you can record software programs (including AW if it runs in software mode) and make videos with audio or voice overs. You can then convert that into a Flash animation. Well, what if someone did this and made tutorial videos for the newbs? Such as: - How to Download the AW Browser - Teleport Basics - Building 101 and so on... So if a newb asks "how do i build?!" you could just tell them (or whisper to them) a link to the video tutorial. Almost all browsers come with Flash now, so almost everyone would be able to watch them. I would make the videos myself, but I just don't have the time. As for the clocks, I know what you mean. I was hosting KoL's world (PIWorld) when about fifteen of them showed up all at once. I had to move the world to TheMask's server because of the load. Aren't they some Flash animation group or something? For the PK/GK (whichever) ejecting for sending an activeworlds.com URL, well, that's just plain dumb. Builderz http://www.3DHost.net Directive 7"2' is InvokedJul 14, 2004, 7:12pm
Yes, you can use SnagIt to take screen shots. But I was talking about
capturing video (the AW browser interface and the mouse moving around the screen) as it happens (in real time), adding voice overs to it, and then converting it to Flash so the newbs could understand things better. Builderz http://www.3DHost.net [View Quote] > Note: Can also use Snagit to make films..easier for me. > > Jag Directive 7"2' is InvokedJul 15, 2004, 2:30am
True, recording in a world with lots of activity in a large area (such
as clouds or the sky moving) would make the file size larger. However, there are other codecs that could be used that may work better. For an example of what I'm talking about, check out a tutorial I made several months ago for a distributed computing project: http://www.3dhost.net/udvg.exe I used an older version of Camtasia to record everything as an AVI, added in some effects, inserted background music, converted it into a Flash animation and then used an eBook compiler program to make it into an EXE that plays once you open it. My idea for the AW tutorials would be similar, but a bit different. The files would be in Flash (no EXE needed) and possibly in other downloadable video formats such as WMV, QuickTime, etc. so users could refer back to them or watch them offline. Instead of the background music, there would be voice overs or someone guiding the user through each step. Like I said, I'd love to make them myself, but I'm busy with other things at the moment. As for Blufftitler, I haven't heard of it before, but I'll be sure to check it out. Oh, and you have some nice tutorials on your site. :) Builderz http://www.3DHost.net Funny little AWI Rates Quirk...Jul 15, 2004, 5:12pm
I think that page has been on the AWI site for at least a year. The only
advertisements I saw that weren't directly related to other AW worlds or events was something for CNet (could have been a Download.com ad) and Caligari (back when AW users could get trueSpace for a discount). Builderz http://www.3DHost.net Home Again (for a bit)Jul 15, 2004, 10:33pm
