We're a group of builders that have been building for birthdays and themed
projects for quite some time now. We'd like to invite citizens to join our
group of builders and have a good time with us! We've got so many plans for
the future including a project on Mars with Veger who is adding new objects
to the Mars Object Path as I'm typing this. tunablues is working on a movie
themed park , and I'm planning a spring/Easter themed build area, there's
going to be a "what is your favorite book" build and so many more themes.
It's all so fun and working with such creative builders is inspiring !
Please join us wont' you?

Thank-you, but no thank-you.
I quit doing birthday builds when it became apparent to me that it was no
more than a "who can build the most impressive and gaudy thing for somebody
you don't
know". It was no longer fun. It was a freaking building contest.

My tiny group of friends used to build funny, whimsical things, based on the
birthday Cit's hobbies and likes. We weren't good builders, but we sure had
FUN!!!!

My birthday last year came less than a month after the tragic death of one
of
our "tiny group of friends".
"Somebody" in AW blabbed that I had a b'day, and to come build. >: /
I was not in the mood.

Just out of politeness, I attended my birthday party. I didn't know 95% of
the ppl who built for me and I haven't heard from any of them since.

The first anniversary of Logan.'s death in the Rhode Island night club fire
is Feburary 20th. My birthday is March 15th.
I'm asking you now, plz take my name OFF the birthday build telegram that is
going around.

Thank-you,
Tart Sugar

Yes, {{{{{{Carl}}}}}}
I'm so very sorry you had to read that here. I wrote the memorial tribute to
Logan. in the March 2003 newsletter. If you want to read it it's at -
http://www.activeworlds.com/newsletter/0303/30313.html
A memorial dedicated to Logan. is in AW at 27605.40S 12777.47E 0.09a 268
Riohnna built a Tport Mall to all of Logan.'s builds, complete with
marvelous
screenshots of them. It's in AW also, at 27544.41S 12607.63E 0.00a 76

AWI also gave Logan.'s family accounts so they could come into AW and heal
with others.
Junodome was also opened for that day, since Logan had migrated through the
dome.
And who says AWI isn't Community?...hmmmm?:)

My thoughts (almost) exactly, TartSugar...

The birthday builds hardly mean anything any more.. Used to be a good friend
would get a few other good friends to build a site and surprize you with it
and that meant something to the receiver... You actually had chatted with
each of the persons more than a few times and had a friendly relationship to
them...

Nowdays it's a group of mostly strangers having a building contest, without
much personal meaning behind it... They hear of a birthday and BOOM!!!
They run to a place to build a competition grounds...

You competition builders can go ahead and do your thing about birthdays but
I hope you don't mind that not everyone is one of the sheep to follow your
meaningless lead in that department...

ON DIFFERENT NOTE::
The group builds are in another catagory in my mind... They are a fairly
good thing for the Community... I can see them getting out of hand
eventually though if the movers and shakers of them don't consider the
whole...

If the ppl dreaming up these builds work to keep the non-elite buiders
involved so that a broad spectrum of styles makes up these Community builds,
then maybe they won't go the way the birthday builds have gone...

daphne you are way off base here. I've only recently been involved in b'day
builds, condolence builds, get well builds, since about June maybe, and
NEVER ONCE have I seen *competition*. I'm sorry if your experience in the
past was bad ... perhaps you don't get along with some of the builders, but
to call us all down and group us as tho we are mindless competitors is just
plain unfair of you.

I can't speak for anyone else but when I build it's because I care to give
an aw gift the only way I can ... and that is to do the best build I can
based on what the receivers likes are. Each time my builds get better and I
use the talents of those before me to do so, never once have I been
reprimanded for using the ideas of others. Although I felt inadequate at
first (because of my newness not because anyone made me feel that way) I'm
coming along nicely. I've always been welcomed by this wonderful group of
artists and THEY are a huge inspiration to me!

I've learned alot in these few short months and I would sincerely like to
thank ALL those *gift builders* for their inspiration AND their help! I've
found the *gift builders* to be outstanding people and I encourage anyone
who wants to learn to *build with flare* to get on in here and join us! And
yes I got a wonderful birthday build and a condolence build recently, and ya
know what ... they were GREAT! And ya know what else? They take time and
effort, and a caring mind to create ... you are just plain WRONG! Do you
realize there are 10s of people each month that these *gift builders* waste
their time competing on? Does that even make any sense daphne???

I call on anyone who has received these lovely gifts to counter...

YESS!!! It was wonderful to see the JunoDome one final time. I know Logan.
was there with us, Wallkeeping, as usual.
And FordPrefect (Logan.'s brother) became a regular at The Gate after that
and Lady Amethyst (Logan.'s sister) even tried to learn how to build!!! : )
Logan.'s parents come into AW occasionally to gaze at their son's builds.
Their Cit name is George if you should happen to see them at The Gate.

Sometimes things are done for a reason and most parties don't know the real
intent behind the gesture.
I personally know a group of people who (out of the kindness of their
hearts) Set up a birthday link area for folks to see if someone they knew
had a birthday coming up.
That group would monitor the upcoming birthdays to see if there were builds
started, then when it got colse and none were built, they would hurridly
make something.
You ask why?
Well....how would lil Susy feel if she attended a bday site, built there
then got her hopes up that there would be a site for her at her next
birthday?
And there was none:(
Why wasn't there a cardsite for her?
Now...maybe Suzy was the quiet type and spent her days building and not
chatting much, but always built at a card site cause she was a "giver" in
the Community.
But then it could have been that Suzy was an AW "Disser" thus folks weren't
interested in supporting negativity?
But guess what?
I bet that small group of people who build those sites for people they have
never met wouldn't give the Disser's a second thought and would make sure
even THEY had a birthday card site....out of the kindness of their hearts:)
Currently I am majorly tied up in regards to organizing the Cys, and
unfortunately can't contribute to card sites....God bless you who do!
But....when I do go to make a card, I learn constantly and enjoy the
friendships at them...PLUS as a added bonus.....I get to view some pretty
damned great artistic creations!
Well...my fingers are tired and I need to get back to the Cys.
Happy Birthday to all of those I haven't or might not get a card built
for....and I hope in the future dissing turns into kissing...oooo Valentines
day is near!
Anyone making a VDay site for a party???

I agree with you, Bit. Really, I do. Especially what you said about "lil
Suzy".
For those ppl that do the builds for other ppl who really WANT those builds,
that's wonderful. But I still stand by opinion, for my own personal reasons.
That's allowed, correct? : )

I just find it very interesting, and a tab bit confusing, that a Cit of AW
who had previously shared my view of the "competition builds" has suddenly
pulled a 180 on me and sent me a rather snippy gram.
Well, that too is their right, I suppose.

Well....please don't be angry at that person. It's possible that seeing or
hearing some other opinions, they have taken a different views of things.

I like both you gals a lot, but I sure don't feel the same way you two do about birthday sites in AW.

TartSugar regards them as "who can build the most impressive and gaudy thing for somebody you don't know" sites.

Daphne says they've become "competition grounds".

I think Lady NightHawk was more on target: "I can't speak for anyone else but when I build it's because I care to give
an aw gift the only way I can ... and that is to do the best build I can based on what the receivers likes are."

I believe most people who do a birthday build for someone - yes, even for someone they don't know - echo Lady NightHawk's sentiments.
For most "b'day builders", it's not a competition - it's simply a fun way to bring at least a moment of pleasure (hopefully) to someone else in AW.

Strangers? Doesn't matter. Many new acquaintances are made at b'day sites.
Some lasting friendships have even been born at b'day sites between people who didn't know each other at all before.

If a person doesn't want a b'day site built for them, for whatever the reason, that's fine.
If a person doesn't want to build at b'day sites for people they don't already know, that's fine, too.

But knocking b'day sites in general (or what you feel they've become) is... well, your opinion.
Sure isn't mine. :)

I share your feelings when I'm building.
I just wanted to share what others do as a group to get things going.
Maybe I got too focused trying to explain stuff ...as usual:)
Thanks for clarifying what most feel in AW.

has the heart of gold in the community! And amongst close friends:)

I'm not angry, no. Just very disappointed is all. That person hadn't even
read my post before they grammed me. They had merely said, "I heard you have
been ...." and "I haven't read it myself." *SIGH* I'm sure they had
received a gram themself, or possibly an email, from somebody who was
totally outraged at my opinion, and sent along a VERY biased point of view.

Me, too, hon. Me, too. :*( I was totally screwed over in the GK
organization, and so I applied to PKs to "give something back" to the
community I have loved for so long.
Know what? They said, "Thx, but no thx." They didn't want the bru-ha-ha of
the GKs overflowing into the PKs. I can understand that, and I don't really
blame them one bit, Bit. (hehehe *sorry* I couldn't resist that.)
They told me to re-appy in 6 months when all this mess blows over and calms
down.
So, plz forgive me if I'm not "feeling the love" in AW lately.
