A crash course in event hosting

Aug 14, 2001, 2:12am
Today was my first time on the administration time of an inworld event. A TV show for ABN, a rather complex undertaking requiring
synchronization of various people and events.

http://www.awnews.com/article.php?s=196 for more info on the show, that's not what I'm here to talk about.

The show went off without a hitch on it's own, but the crowd had quite a few bad apples. Unfortunately, even with a Peacekeeper
present, little was able to be done about them. Even though they were placing obscene xsign.rwx objects with some sexually explicit
wav files in the studio, nothing was able to be done. For much of the show, two of us spent our time bump warping them across
alphaworld into a bump warp trap we'd built for this type of situation, into void, stuff like that.

The PK was able to give us the luxury of giving them a stern talking to in whisper, though one made us swear not to report him to
AWC or the PKs for his actions before he'd stop and leave (Wheres the logic? A PK was RIGHT THERE)

From this experience, we learned never to trust in people's common sense or decency under any circumstances and never to host a
non-audience participation event in Alphaworld. 90% of the comments by visitors during the show were from the few bad apples.

"How am I supposed to laugh at a nerd host?"
"At least put on a good midi"
"SOMEONE WARPED ME"
"I'm going to delete this place"
"I'm a hacker"
"I WANNA HOST! I'LL BE BETTER AT IT"

However, I'd like to thank the two or three people that had the decency to keep their mouths shut until afterwards and have respect
for what we were doing, and applauded our efforts afterwards.

Alphaworld is currently USELESS for events because of the bad apples that just look to party crash. I don't know what can be done
about it, but somthing certainly should be. Thanks for reading.

*sigh* Thanks Xav, in a few more days this'll have become World War 23. Why can't human beings ever learn some tolerance? Tolerance
for belief and custom that is, we already have far too much tolerance for idiocy.

You people just don't get it do you? Gor is a part of Activeworlds just as much as paintball and bingo are. Those of you who
persecute goreans simply because of the slavery aspect, IT'S NOT REAL. Theres plenty of slavery in the real world to be dealt with
and despised without resorting to finding people offensive because of sexual practice. In fact, it's probably not the "slavery"
that's got most people offended, but the sexual nature of it. Go critiscize another way of life, one that's harmful to others
outside it's bounds and leave these nice (for the most part, as with any society they have bad eggs) people (yes, they ARE people)
alone. Perhaps the Columbian cartels or the Israelis and Palestinians?

(I'm gonna catch it for this post, I know it)

Why rebuild Cell database after crash?

Aug 18, 2001, 2:17am
Come on AWC, you back up every night. That means you only lose a small amount of building if you revert to backup instead of wasting
everyone's valuable building time while you try to fix it. In fact, it would appear that if you had reverted to last night's backup,
less building time would have been lost in lost buildings than what you're doing right now. Anyone agree? Disagree? Indifferent?
Don't give a crap about Alphaworld?

Why rebuild Cell database after crash?

Aug 18, 2001, 4:35am
Apparently I forgot for awhile that not everyone builds the same quality at the same rate. Give most Alphaworld builders somthing
specific to build in an hour and it turns out a tourist shanty, give some people an hour and you have the Taj Mahal. I get like this
when I have nowhere familiar to go. Ignore me and go fix that damn world!

Annoying bug

I'm just posting this to see how many others are having this problem. When I exit aworld.exe, I'm given an illegal operation. It
only happens after aworld has been in use for awhile. Occasionally, it kills the property cache for whatever world I was in, and
gets to be a real PAIN through that.

What are you doing that causes it?Chances are that it IS a browser problem, possibly faulty objects and maybe hardware issues.

Value of a cit

Aug 26, 2001, 3:28am
Is there any anymore? Juno gets free cits, why should we be punished into paying because of our choice of ISP? What about the free
cits given to Outerworlds citizens?

SO WHY IN THE HECK AM I SUPPOSED TO PAY MY $20?

What does it get me besides tourists ABUSING me at every turn?
Every time I come near one they do nothing but have cybersex, stand in my face and wave and verbally assault cits, if not myself
personally.

I certainly don't see anything that I get, other than a bill that the non-paying cits don't.

Hell, half the PKs even look like they're straight out of Junodome.

Peacekeeper 12: WILL SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON ???

This is one of the MANY factors that caused me to forfeit my account (Wing) to expiration earlier today. Perhaps when things change
I will return.

When oh when is awmapper coming back?

Apr 21, 2003, 1:11am
You shouldn't have said that, I'm obligated to try to prove you wrong now.
:)

Here's a simple, low-budget implementation of a new mapping system based
around the assumption that Alphaworld is backed up onto somthing archaic
like a tape instead of somthing slick and awesome like a RAID array or an
offsite server.

-Tape reader
-Standard x86 PC (Custom built) with a pair of 120 gig HDD's installed in
some easy-to-remove method (Either external Firewire/USB2.0 chassis or a
clever person could rig somthing up to stick in a pair of 5.25" bays similar
to those expensive drive housings that servers use)
-Existing mapper software (If x86) or a modified version of the "Mapview"
util linked from http://www.activeworlds.com/products/download.asp so it can
handle the massive amounts of data
-A lot of time to process the data and create the JPEGs, storing them to the
120 gig drives

Then, whenever you backup Alpha, just drop the tape into the mapper machine,
load it in, go stash the tape in your safe deposit box at the bank and let
the mapper software run it's course (I don't see how it would take any more
than a week or two with the advent of ReallyFastProcessors(TM)).

Then, with all the map work done, unplug the 120 gig drives from the mapper
computer, and move them physically to the webserver that will be hosting the
map, copy everything over, take the drives back to the mapper computer,
reformat them, turn it off for about a month, rinse, repeat.

Now don't tell me AWI doesn't have $5000 (assuming the tape readers are
CRAZY expensive at $3000 a pop) to pull this off laying around somewhere.

No more copy/paste action commands?

Apr 24, 2003, 12:33am
Yes, but that's still one more keypress (Not to mention the added stress on
the server and all involved bandwidths involved in telling you that your
newly created object can't go there, and the spamming of your build window
with "You cannot encroach into another person's property" and whatnot)

It really needs to be a world option.

Let's Plan a Coup

Apr 26, 2003, 12:00am
Eh. No. I just got finished deleting some 10,000 tourist objects (Mostly
bright colored pp16's with pokemon pictures) nestled around my N/W axis
build area. I don't wanna do that again. Entering I have no problem with,
but letting them build in AWI worlds just ends up dissapointing them when I
come along and bulldoze it because it either A) Gets in my way, B) Is
obscene or C) Makes my monitor go batty because of all the bright colors (I
really need to replace this thing).

And yes, right click copy/paste needs to be reenabled.

Get Wells, Birthdays Problem

I've been concerned about this too - especially with the "memorial" builds.
It's my personal feeling that AWI should ante up some webspace and allow a
team of volunteers (AWHS?) eminent domain rights so they can go around and
repair the damaged links.

And Stecloud, this isn't about future builds -it's about the ones that are
already there.

Get Wells, Birthdays Problem

Apr 26, 2003, 11:52pm
A 3TB x86/IDE server is only $9000. Revenue from 350000 cits is $2,100,000 a
year. And almost every cit up to 300000 is no longer active (From my random
right-clicking of people), so they don't need webspace. This also happens to
reduce citizenship revenue to $30,000 - still a significant chunk
considering that worlds and universes are not counted.

Sample configuration of server (I can no longer recommend the motherboard
described here however, but very similar ones are available at a similar
price):

Motherbrd A7n8x Deluxe $151
CPU Athlon MP2000 $131
RAM TwinX 1gb Black $280
Vid Old School Radeon $28
HSF Alpha 6035 $27
IDE Cards 5x Promise ATA133 $180
DVDRW Sony DRX-500UL $419
HDDs 25x WD 8mb 120gb $6,800
Case Custom Built $100
PSU 5x Enermax 550w's in // $795
IDE Cables 10 32" cables $20
SATA=>ATA 2x $44
$8,975

A few minor notes - the chassis has to be custom built because NOTHING on
the planet can fit that much stuff. I have drawings of a highly efficient
chassis design for this particualr system. The 5 power supplies each deliver
550 watts max, and will be (Warrenty-voidingly) modified so that their ATX
control pins are connected - so they all actually turn on when you press the
power button. An alternative to the warrenty voiding procedure would be to
connect their control pins to individual switches on the front panel of the
case so they can be turned on independently. The only disadvantage to this
is that you have to also turn them all off individually, and that you MUST
turn them on BEFORE you press the power switch which activates the power
supply connected to the motherboard.

Each server would be capable of dishing out 100mbit connections to the
Internet (I doubt AWI uses one that fat anyway), and is capable of providing
roughly 153600 citizens with 20mb of webspace, not accounting for the OS
markup of roughly 500mb. And technically, each cit only needs 10mb since
JPEGs are crazy small, therefore increasing the citizen capacity per server
to 307200. Each 10mb allotment could seat just over 100 100kb JPEG files.
With the server holding that many cits, each cit only costs AWI 3 cents to
build that server.

And for the more industrious users, they could purchase 30mb more for a one
time $3 fee. That portion of the server only costs NINE CENTS, so AWI makes
a 3333% profit whenever someone needs more space.

Get Wells, Birthdays Problem

Apr 27, 2003, 5:34pm
Backup is very simple - in the short term, it's provided by simple mirroring
to the blank drives. In the long term, a second server is activated that
mirrors the first.

Mirroring between the two servers can be done without even hurting
throughput to the Internet - almost all the motherboards that I could
recommend for use in this server have two onboard 100mbps NIC's. Connect one
to the internet, the other to the other server. Granted that mirroring 1.5TB
of data (The point where you can no longer mirror the data in the same
machine) across a 100mbps network connection is slow to say the least, it's
a LOT better than nothing. Net backup cost for AWI - $10k. Net cost per
citizen on server: Under $1.

This protects against hardware failure and such, but doesn't take into
account the possiblity of a catastrophic loss-of-facility incident such as a
fire. But if AWI were to lose their servers, chances are Active Worlds is
gone anyway. Insurance doesn't cover everything, and AWI is too small of an
organization to simply eat the difference.

Now what I DIDN'T take into account was the cost of operations, simply
because I don't know anything about AW's server hosting - whether they do it
themselves in their offices or if they colocate them out (ouch), nor do I
know the actual electricity draw of this system (Although I estimate about
400w - ONE of those 5 power supplies could power the whole thing, but the
wiring would suck severely at that point.)

People are intimidated by Terabytes, they aren't particularly big.

Get Wells, Birthdays Problem

Apr 28, 2003, 7:42pm
Hrm, I made a good guess. That still gives $30,000 a year, plus world and
universe revenues. Which is cutting it a lot closer, and depends entirely on
the rest of AW's operating costs.

Hence why AW makes the decisions, not us. They know the details, we can sit
here and speculate.

[Bug Update - Repost to beta: 481] Sliding/Collision performance

Apr 27, 2003, 7:06pm
I just did a repeat of these tests, and I lose no more than .1FPS (From a
starting point of 64.1) in D3d/T&L both while sliding along the object at
varying angles and pushing up against it perpendicularly. See the chart for
my full results. Sliding count is the LOWEST that I see, not constant.

Mode Standing Still Pushing Sliding
D3D/T&L 64.1 64.1 64.0
D3D 64.1 64.1 64.0
OpenGL 64.1 64.1 49.9
Software 12.1 11.8 11.8

Vis locked at 200 - pushing up against boardh4m rotated 90 degrees around
the X axis to act like a "wall". looking towards directional light source
over user defined light sources, over animated water, under a 3-layer sky
and pushing upwards on a hill.

No performance hit to speak of. What's your system configuration?

Test platform:
WinXP Pro w/ SP1
GeForce 4 Ti4200 128mb
Asus A7n8x Deluxe motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 1900+ (1.6GHz)
256mb DDR single channel at 133MHz
56k Winmodem
DirectX 8.1 (WinXP stock)

Running software:
WinXP
StyleXP service w/ custom WingCorp skin
mIRC
PC-cillin 2002
WinZip Quick Pick
PowerStrip
InterVideo WinCinema Manager
Winamp Agent
Daemon Tools w/ 4 virtual drives enabled
CloneCD w/ 8 virtual drives enabled
3Com network diagnostic tool
nForce Tray Options
Winamp 2.90 (Playing a variety of songs - framerate fluctuated during track
change, so those results were thrown out)
Outlook Express
