Perhaps it would require a bit of rewriting to allow for avatars beyond the usual 200m hearing range, but it'd be worth it. KAH really why isnt it here already?Nov 30, 2002, 2:12pm

Now it's set up to ignore everything beyond 200m, so if the server suddently came up with an AW_AVATAR_ADD for an av outside hearing range it would confuse the browser. I wish they'd work a bit on the news server, it's very unstable and keeps
dropping my connection when I'm in the middle of reading an article. It's annoying having to wait for a new connection, it's not like this is a large USENET server with 20k groups and 500 concurrent connections either. KAH Get a *stable* news serverFeb 28, 2003, 11:23am

In that case you're lucky :-)) I know for a fact it's no setting, as I often get disconnected right in the middle of downloading an article. The server is generally slow anyway. BTW, there are two patents on the same thing (the USPTO is such a great example of competetent civil servants, isn't it?), one owned by Unisys and one owned by IBM. The Unysys patent expires in the US on June 20th this year, the IBM patent expires sometime this year, I'm not sure when. Even if those patents expire, GIF is still inferior to JPEG and PNG/MNG. I think AW really needs support for PNG, as it's compression is lossless, and often the end result can turn out smaller than lossy- compressed JPEGs.
