I don't think a lot of machines can handle 100k polys in a realtime environment with a decent framerate. I think this may've been a bit of an exageration, though. I have often complained about the lack of optimisation in AW, as it is strangely slow even on powerfull systems that can handle scenes with greater polycounts much better in other applications. It's no wonder AW is lagging behind in graphics when you think about the number of programmers working on it... KAH Beta 3.4 [479] [BUG] Problem with create picture?Apr 15, 2003, 1:10pm

You'll need to use some sort of proxying device to remove the Referer HTTP header from AW's HTTP requests. If you ask me, it's not a good idea setting the Referer header (yes, it's misspelled, but that's how the standard is) since you can't produce a valid URL to identify the referring location anyway. They should've invented their own custom header instead, so systems designed for AW interface could still identify the browser. I believe a lot of software firewalls also provide this sort of proxying functionality, check your docs if you've got one. KAH Beta 3.4 [479] [BUG] Problem with create picture?Apr 21, 2003, 8:22pm

There is absolutely no need for including the Referer header in any HTTP request. It's an optional header, and since AW cannot really produce a valid one, it was a mistake to add it to the requests. What they could do would be to add a custom header (just pop X- in front of the name) with the AW location so for example OP scripts could identify your location. The workaround: use a firewall or proxy that lets you remove headers (Norton, McAfee, the list goes on...). KAH Get Wells, Birthdays ProblemApr 28, 2003, 11:44am

You obviously haven't read the standard (like I have many times). It's an *optional* header, and requires a *valid* URI as referrer. Even if you use the teleport.cgi URI it still won't be valid, because the document was *not* referred from a URI, but from an AW location. Thus, AW is actually violating the standard. I disagree with you, it was not the right thing to do. There is no way the browser can generate a correct Referer header, as locations in AW aren't URIs. The definition of the header is as follows: Referer = "Referer" ":" ( absoluteURI | relativeURI ) How would AW generate a valid, real absolute or relative URI? Not possible. So the choice of this header was wrong. Since no headers in the standard applies to AW's case, they should've invented their own (X-AW- location or whatnot). You're still identifying yourself with your IP address, AW never hid it. I want some way of identifying where the request came from (more specifically the world, for the reasons you stated), but not in an incorrect way that also destroys a lot of property from the last seven years. The ESRB rates too strictly, personally I prefer the ELSPA (European counterpart of the ESRB) ratings, they're simply age based, and IMHO they rate more intelligently. I don't think you understand. HTML is defined by a standard. It's WRONG to write HTML that doesn't respect the standard. You can make really cool and great-looking pages while still being 100% standard-compliant. It's all about skills, you see. Uh, no. All the table tricks I use validate fine (some can break NS 4.x though, but that's not my problem). If you use HTML 4.01 and CSS 2, you can get some really neat designs that will (should) work in all standard- compliant browsers. PLEASE ? There is a big difference actually. A newsreader fetches news articles over the NNTP protocol, and displays them according to standards regarding news articles. A browser fetches webpages over the HTTP protocol, and displays them according to HTML standards. They shouldn't be mixed. NNTP is there for news articles, HTTP is there for webpages. Neither are designed to do the job of the other. Anyway, it's mostly MS OE and Netscape that even supports HTML, and that's a good argument for not using HTML. Don't come here and tell me to get a new/different newsreader because mine is obsolete, it's not. HTML support is wrong, and bad, because if people observe that others actually read their HTML posts they won't stop posting in HTML, and continue the misuse of NNTP for transfering HTML. Another good argument is that HTML bloats the post. For a one-line message, the post becomes at least ten times larger in actual size when posted in HTML. As Wing pointed out, that could take a long time on slow connections, and is a waste of everyone's bandwidth.
