Broadband (mostly ADSL, some power line or cable, very few Sat DSL)
coverage in germany is about 27% I think. Some cannot get it because of the region, some prefer cheaper ISDN flat rates. [View Quote] ThereJan 10, 2003, 5:38am
The "specific program" is freeware, it seems to be a stripped-down
lite version of 3DS Max : http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax/ I haven't played with it yet. From how I read it they just offer a way to market your avatars and 3D models like in ebay but I'm quite sure you can still make them freeware or freesource. World Server.... or not?Jan 13, 2003, 6:10am
Have you checked the Logfile that the world server writes?
The linux world server gives no error messages on the screen, everything is written to the log file. I guess the windows version works the same. If you have been in the world, it must have noticed this and must have written the information into the log file. Can you connect the world server with the admin tool? It should show the world running too, filling the INI file isn't enough. If you couldn't connect with the admin tool, check the world server logfile again if it reports an error or just didn't see the connect attempt at all. You should be able to make an atdump, make a backup copy of
atdump.txt, then modify those lines : 6 * 7 * 8 * 26 * 36 * 38 * (have I forgotten one ?) and then atload the file. This should allow anything to anyone so you should at least be able to enter and maybe find out what's wrong. I am not sure if that helps in any way - but it's at least a try. As long as it is weekend and as long as it covers at least
half a day, it should not be a problem for most to visit. I think we shoud not bring VR stuff down to any national(istic) discussion. In VR anything goes, why should it not be possible to make it international? In Andras' easter egg and christmas present hunt it worked, avvys and cys didn't fail either. The fireworks of Jo, Nightraven and Gobman have been very well visited by people from all over the globe just lately. This shows that time zones do not really matter too much. [AWNews] Back in Business!Jan 18, 2003, 8:47am
wb :)
Oh, and get rid of "coming soon", I was already about to use the back arrow in the web browser because I didn't expect it would send me to the awnews contents. "Coming soon" usually means there is not anything there yet. Well, maybe part of the dust *g [View Quote] [AWNews] Back in Business!Jan 18, 2003, 5:50pm

Andras has one for this purpose
news://andras.net/OffTopic.flames but you could avoid the flames and trolling a little by choosing the group related to your topic. Some of your latest posts would have been more wishlist related - although I am not sure if Enzo or someone else from AWC reads it frequently, but I don't know that about Community either. At least sometimes they do though, as there are some replies sometimes. I am quite sure that nearly everyone who reads Community has subscribed to Wishlist too, so posting wishes there will not reach less readers, it will just make the picky ones less upset ;) [View Quote] Tom (Flagg) is leaving AWJan 28, 2003, 4:02pm
I am quite a newbie, relatively spoken, but I know that some
of the good "old" guys are still arround now and then. Facter isn't gone either. Let's hope that Flagg will stay in AW too. [View Quote] Seiya's SongJan 28, 2003, 4:12pm

Any reason and any method would be fine at this time. It's
already too late to change things but not too late to show Bush how wrong it is what he is doing. I have choosen those links because they have a few more interesting things to say though. [View Quote] Re: Patched BrowserApr 6, 2003, 7:19pm
allow 2 or more instances :)
Why don't you just use a hash from universe/host as the window class? This would allow multiple browsers on the same PC without tricks but inhibit multiple instances in the same universe - well, IF you need to inhibit something. 2 instances work very well : - 2.2 with 3.3 - 3.2 with 3.3 - 3.2 with 3.4 - 2.2 with 3.4 - 2.2 with 2.2 - 3.3 with 3.3 I never had any trouble with it, even on my slow P2/400 with software rendering. The background AW just updates the 3D view very seldom - but that's fine. And I think it would even be a necessary change - 3dee is a different product than 3dnetz for example, so why does 3dnetz not start when 3dee is running ? Maybe add "on your own risk" or something like that to the manual, and "report no bugs when this fails". [View Quote] citizenship pricesApr 13, 2003, 4:49am
I don't have a credit card because I think CC companies rip
people off. Money order from Europe to the US is complicated and expencive. I hope they will allow PayPal payment soon. They take away some % too but are easy to handle. Even better would be if they had bank accounts in those countries with many customers. Some companies have that. An example are the makers of the old 3d explorer, they had bank accounts in several European countries. Or they could ask their distributors to handle it. I can only speak for me :
An AW citizenship would be a nice present for a friend who does not have enough own money but the current payment methods are not very friendly to "foreign" customers. The problem I have with CC companies is that they rip of those people who do _not_ have a CC, that's why I refuse to get a credit card. They force shop owners to increase the prices in order to avoid a credit card fee for their customers who want to pay with CC. That's blackmail and maffia methods :-( [View Quote] citizenship pricesApr 13, 2003, 12:58pm
PayPal only for new worlds I think, not for renewals.
I asked about it and they replied "maybe later" [View Quote] citizenship pricesApr 13, 2003, 4:51pm
Annual price paying with CC : $69.95
Annual price paying through PayByCash : $84.95 Plus the fee from PayPal to PayByCash I think even money order would be cheaper than that. When I asked for world renewal I received this answer : <quote> At this time we do not offer world purchase or renewals through PayPal. I have asked out tech people to see if there is anything we can do to ad such a service. I will let you know if they come up with anything positive. </quote> so there is a chance that they will support PayPal directly sometimes :) [View Quote] citizenship pricesApr 13, 2003, 6:27pm
2.9% is way cheaper than any other transfer method.
I wouldn't mind it AW would add 5% to the cit. price for PayPal users but anything close to or even above 20% is too much for just transporting the money. It is even cheaper to physically send money with UPS, including insurance, than most money transfer methods. [View Quote] IDEA: Radio/TV Station Directory...Apr 18, 2003, 8:57pm
I'm not sure if you or me have misunderstood Hamster.
I think his idea is to have only ONE station that sends different contents depending on your location. Similar to those RDS car radios that always search for the closest station. [View Quote] Tourists+No Pics=Citizens RevoltApr 27, 2003, 6:35am
The new HTTP header fields help to protect.
They help to protect artwork on your own object path as well as use of free web space that is against the terms of usage of free web space providers. The idea for this HTTP referrer information even came from wishlist, from people who wanted more protection for their artwork, wanted to stop parasitic use of their object path or just wanted to send different informations depending on the world you're visiting. It is just good manner to identify yourself when you download stuff. Traffic causes costs. If you want to blame someone, blame the web space providers but AW did the correct thing by adding those informations. They do what every web browser does and adapted to the common standards. From RFC2616 : > The Referer[sic] request-header field allows the client to > specify, for the server's benefit, the address (URI) of the > resource from which the Request-URI was obtained Further down (same RFC) you find : > For example, a browser client could have a toggle switch for > browsing openly/anonymously, which would respectively enable/ > disable the sending of Referer and From information. but this recommendation refers to the protection of secure documents and does not apply here, an AW world is not a secure document. You still have the option to filter the referrer yourself, using a local proxy. [View Quote] Tourists+No Pics=Citizens RevoltApr 27, 2003, 10:00am
Nothing wrong about inventing an URI
It is a protocol identifier like http:, ftp:, telnet:, mailto: gopher:, mk: and so on and as they invented the protocol they can make an identifier for it too. All companies create URI protocol prefixes for all kinds of web browser plugins (especially the streaming ones). Why should AW not do something similar? What they now could add is a registry handler for this protocol, that allows urlmon.dll to start the AW browser in the referenced world. This is the last tweak that is needed to create a working URI for the desired environment (windows). And it allows the providers of free web space to take care for their terms of usage, which cannot be wrong at all. If they give away something for free they have any right to restrict the usage. Most of them disallow using their ressources just for storage, they pay for the traffic and the banners bring this investments back. Free web space is a business and like any other business they have to make money. This is how it works. The only thing that AW destroyed was the ability to do something that should not have been done anyway. [View Quote] Auto-Hide online statusApr 29, 2003, 7:11pm
I think hiding the online status is over-used. Why do
people go to a chat system just in order to hide there? Especially the "hide" setting in the citizen options is used way too much - often people are quite surprised that they are hiding - it isn't clear to them that they hide from everyone else and wonder why they do not meet their friends anymore. Some seem to think that the "hide" option does not affect people they have on their contact list. There should be an option to hide the own online status for people who hide theirs. And there should be a warning message that explains exactly what happens when someone puts a checkmark into the "hide" option. |
