of the ISP software package uses IE. (Y'know... those things you get in the mail that you wind up using as coasters. :P) [View Quote] -- Goober King Obviously AOL fears its own superior browser :) gooberking at utn.cjb.net GKs and their PerksApr 30, 2003, 10:08pm
*smacks forehead* You don't listen too well, do ya, chief? Here, I'll
break it down for you: Person A likes to help people and decides to become a GK/PK/WK/Teacher/etc. Person A contacts said organization to join Person A goes through application process Person A gets accepted and becomes a member of said organization Person A continues being a member for about a year Person A learns that there are bonuses to being a GK/PK/WK/Teacher/etc, such as cit extensions, discounts etc. This news makes Person A happy, which gives Person A extra incentive to continue being a model GK/PK/WK/Teacher/etc. Now, no where in that process is Person A notified of the perks associated with their job when they signed up. They learn of these perks later on. In fact, I'm willing to bet the average non-GK/PK/Wk didn't even know these perks existed until you mentioned them. You'll also note that Person A's original motivation for signing up was to *help people*, which is true for the vast majority of GK/PK/WK/etcs. While it's expected that there will be one or two bad apples in the bunch, they are eventually weeded out. Now, for the love of COB, you naysayers really need to get a hobby or something. There are no conspiracies or oppression here, so let's not try to create any, ok? See, this is one of the reasons that open beta sucks: Because you have
to explain everything 10 million different times! >_< For starters, the "bleeding" problem is caused by increasing the max viewing distance to 1200. Want less bleeding? Then lower the max viewing distance (called "Max view/fog distance" in World features) Secondly, that page you provided has to be the worst possible testing venue, because the person is using two totally different computers to perform his/her tests. The problems that are mentioned could be due to any number of factors, including video card, drivers, view mode (OpenGL/DirectX/etc), etc. So, if you know who made that page, tell them that A) It's a BETA! If you find a bug, *report* it, don't make some lame-ass petition page over it, and B) if you're going to be demonstrating differences between 3.3 and 3.4, use the same computer! :P [View Quote] -- Goober King It's going to be a looooooong beta... gooberking at utn.cjb.net [AWNews] Tourist PollMay 1, 2003, 8:44pm
Since some people in here have decided to take up the Tourist crusade
again, AWNews' Monthly Poll for May is also concerning tourist restrictions. Now, last time we ran an announced poll, we only had 36 votes, which isn't very representative of the entire AW population. Subsequently, ENZO discarded the results. So this time around, I'm insisting that you tell everyone you know about this poll so we can not only get a true representation of what AW thinks about this issue, but also so ENZO will actually consider the results! :P Remember, when you tell other people about the poll, remind them that they have to have an AWNews account in order to vote. Signing up for an account is painless, fast, and I will personally guarantee you won't wind up on any spam lists or whatnot because of it. So, if you people REALLY want to affect change, VOTE! Or, we can just keep arguing about it here in the NGs and watch nothing get done. :P It's up to you. -- Goober King Fight for your right gooberking at utn.cjb.net [AWNews] Tourist PollMay 1, 2003, 9:13pm

I understand that registering for an account isn't quite as easy as
firing off a telegram, but unfortunately, I have no control over that aspect of the polling system. It has nothing to do with tracking votes or anything. If you want to vote, you have to register. :-/ But if it's anonymity you're worried about, the poll system does have the ability for users to post Anonymous comments (simply check the Post Anonymously box before sending your comment). And the votes themselves are always anonymous, as I, nor anyone else, has the ability to see who voted for what. Bruce, there's a reason they call it a "Beta": It's not done yet!
Therefore, it's not going to be as stable as a finished product! :P As for your log file, you can use Ananas' Tail program to grab the last 50 lines from your crash log. http://oct31.de/tmp/tail.zip Put it in your AW directory and open a DOS prompt to that directory and type this: tail -50 aworld.log > 50lines.txt That'll take the last 50 lines of your log file and put it in a file called 50lines.txt [View Quote] -- Goober King Oh no.... A few suggestions for you:
1) Stop taking your namesake, and replace it with something like Advil. 2) Learn to recognize a joke when you see one. 3) Sexism has nothing to do with it. Incorrect.
Just because rude people exist in real life doesn't mean we should also put up with it in AW. For one thing, if you can't control your rudeness in a text-based environment like AW, where you can actually take the time to think out your responses carefully, then maybe you shouldn't be socializing in the first place. So, in order to control the morons who can't seem to control their fingers, we kick people out who are being exceedingly rude, whether it's their first offense or their 100th offense. Don't like it? Feel free to take your business elsewhere. As for the real life rude people, you don't have to live with them, either. You can always punch them in the face! :) [View Quote] -- Goober King Free Speech does not equal Free Stupidity gooberking at utn.cjb.net Aw T shirts? i want 1! i wanna be a walking blillboard for aw!Jun 6, 2003, 12:13pm
Yes, I was joking about the "punch them in the face" bit. I would think
you'd know my brand of humor by now. ;P As for your second point, I don't think you can blame the lack of visitors in AW on PKs, or even on rude people. It's simply because of the price increase that most people have taken off for points unknown. And the only way for that to be reversed would be for AWI to either a) lower the prices again, or b) somehow make AW *worth* the price increase. And as it stands right now, I don't see either of those options occurring anytime soon. :-/ [View Quote] -- Goober King Over your head gooberking at utn.cjb.net Did Active Worlds Inc drop the ball here?Jun 12, 2003, 9:59am
You're kidding, right? You actually like having only a few hundred
people in the entire universe, with no one hanging out in the normal active areas? AlphaWorld itself is big enough to hold those kind of numbers! The fact is that the AW Universe is so huge practically requires a huge population, otherwise it will seem abandoned and empty. Hate to break it to you, but saying you have an ego doesn't excuse you
from acting like an ass. I have an ego too, but you don't see me throwing it in everyone's face (usually :P). The wonderful thing about text-based communication is you can actually *control* yourself and think things through before clicking that Send button. So, the fact that your responses are usually antagonistic in nature, I can only assume that a) You can't be bothered to pay attention to what you write or b) You want everyone to think you're an ass. I would refer you to the whole Citizens Union debacle if ENZO hadn't
wiped out the NGs. :P Basically, the only way such a committee would have any real relevance is if it had direct cooperation with AWI. Rick and Co. didn't seem to hot to the idea back when they were a public company, but maybe now that they're back in the private arena and seem to be slightly more interested in interacting with the customers, they'd be up for the challenge. Actually, it would be better to make the filter completely client-side.
That way, people can make their own filter lists tailored to their tastes. If someone uses a word you don't like, simply add it to your list!
