Umm, so which is it? :P
[View Quote] -- Goober King Pointing out the not-so-obvious awnews at awnews.org Please read / AW HACKEDJul 13, 2003, 1:10pm
You've got to be a little more specific than that, Leaf. :P
Nora's IP traces to a RoadRunner server in Waco, TX STA Knight's IP traces to a RoadRunner server somewhere in the Allen County, OH area DOOMED's IP traces to a RoadRunner server in Xenia, OH Johnny's IP traces to a BellSouth server somewhere in the Miami, FL area EmporerZ's IP traces to a AT&T server somewhere in the Detroit, MI area Of course, as has been said previously, they could be using proxies, but I'm not sure if we can give them that much credit. :P [View Quote] -- Goober King Down to brass tacks awnews at awnews.org Please read / AW HACKEDJul 13, 2003, 9:29pm
You know the argument is getting ridiculous when you're arguing over a
hypothetical situation. Bowen, do you think that, just once, you could actually argue about the topic at hand, instead of trying to divert it in ten different directions (i.e. admin availability, ICQ installation, etc)? :P [View Quote] [View Quote] -- Goober King Arguing over futility awnews at awnews.org Please read / AW HACKEDJul 14, 2003, 9:06am
No, actually it doesn't. Baron only mentioned ICQ as a joke, and he even
said that OSes have nothing to do with the conversation in a previous post. The topic was about malicious bots and what AWI can do to stop them, not about Windows admin privileges, installing ICQ, or any of that crap. But that's all beside the point. My point is you do this all the time, picking up on some innocuous tidbit and running with it. Just yesterday, I left for a few hours, came back to the NGs and found 40-some-odd new messages in here, and about half of them were you and Baron going back and forth about crap. Oh, and Baron, stop encouraging him. :P [View Quote] [View Quote] -- Goober King Stick to the point awnews at awnews.org Please read / AW HACKEDJul 14, 2003, 6:06pm
Because I know you have a spark of insight within you that occasionally
comes out to remind the world that it still exists. Hell, if the original conversation was about Windows admin privs, you'd be shining right now. Your thought process just seems to be in the right place at the wrong time. And, for the record, this would be my response to anyone who uses the "If you don't like it, filter me!" excuse to act like a moron. I firmly believe that even the lowest of the low has the potential to surprise you with the occasional insight. I just try to accelerate the process by verbally browbeating it out of them. *smirk* [View Quote] -- Goober King Beaten like a red-headed step-child gooberking at utn.cjb.net Please read / AW HACKEDJul 15, 2003, 10:05am
Going to work doesn't count as "going outdoors" unless you work in
construction or landscaping. Otherwise, you spend the entire day locked up in a building, either at the office or at home. Oh, and you give yourself too much credit. Eep and Strike can be absolutely virulent when need be. You just seem to aspire to be annoying. :P And neither Eep nor Strike ever talked in the 3rd person. :P [View Quote] [View Quote] -- Goober King Outside looking in awnews at awnews.org Please read / AW HACKEDJul 15, 2003, 4:33pm
Ayiyiyiyi....
I'm not going to start with you, Bowen. Just stick to the original topic at hand from now on. Think you can handle that? :P P.S. It's a rhetorical question. You don't have to answer it. :P [View Quote] -- Goober King Rhetorically challenged awnews at awnews.org Am I special?Jul 20, 2003, 3:07am

Then it may surprise you to learn that I agree with you, or at least
partially agree with you. BB's lack of tact is often irritating and you would expect more from someone who claims to be more experienced at life. Then again, you aren't doing yourself any favors either, Bowen, but we already know about all that. :P Watching you and Bud go at it is like watching some lame reality show: The participants disgust you, but you just can't help but follow along. Sorry, but I'll have to agree with Bud on this one. Once again, you're
just acting like an ass to have something to talk about. What part of "The CA is not the GK's responsibility" don't you get? If the GKs can do nothing about the CA, then complaining to them about it won't do squat. Then again, accomplishing nothing never stopped you before, so why should it now? :P [View Quote] [View Quote] -- Goober King Ass-man awnews at awnews.org editing an MP3Jul 19, 2003, 12:18am
MP3 is a file format, not a song, hence an MP3 file in and of itself is
not illegal. It's only illegal if it is an unauthorized copy of sound/song. And there are such things as legal MP3 songs that artists hand out all the time. This idea of MP3 as file format instead of song is a vast difference that the music industry (and you, apparently :P) have a really hard time grasping, which is causing most of this trouble in the first place. [View Quote] > But MP3's are, which Brock specifically noted. -- Goober King Grasping at straws awnews at awnews.org Another 2nd Life ArticleJul 21, 2003, 5:51pm
And what exactly would you introduce them to? If these people have never
heard of AW, they would see it as a cheap Second Life knock-off, since AW doesn't have as many features or as much press. Even if you told them that AW is over 8 years older than SL, their first impression would be "has been". In the land of publicity, first impressions are more important than age, and since folks like SL and There.com have all this money to throw at advertising and press releases, they can make themselves seem to be the only shows in town. Until AWI steps up and actually tries to compete with these outfits by advertising and continuously adding features in a timely manner, AW will continue to play third fiddle in the "Virtual Wars"... Has the entire NG community suddenly gone mad? Weebo's cracked and
raving like a lunatic, Crazy Pills thinks everyone's out to get him, Hamster's ranting in his own little world, as usual, and everyone else seems to be more interested in stoking the fires than putting them out. For all the morons, here's a little tip: If it didn't happen in the NGs, then leave it out of the NGs! This includes, but is not limited to, PK complaints, GZ arguments, feelings of inadequacy brought on from abuse in AW, and lame town occurrences that no one else cares about. *glares pointedly at Hamster* Now, for the love of COB, would everyone *please* just knock it off?! :P -- Goober King The voice of reason awnews at awnews.org Daphne a bitch? [View Quote] -- Goober King Highly irritated awnews at awnews.org To All Things... An EndingAug 15, 2003, 1:34am
Two years ago, I wrote an edition of StVMP for AWNews where I described
my first experience in AW. I described how I was filled with awe as I watched scenes download around me, and felt compelled to explore this new frontier whenever possible. It was this feeling that drove me to do whatever I could to try and help solve AW's problems, so other people wouldn't have to worry about them and be as I was: someone cheerfully lost in a virtual world. I then ended that opinion piece with the following paragraph: "There are days where I think of trying to go back to those days of wandering: Abandon UTN, abandon AWNews, abandon the hoards of telegrams and contacts, leave behind all the rhetoric and flames of the newsgroups, get a new account, and simply wander off into the sunset.rwx in search of my next big adventure. That, I think, would be a very fitting ending indeed..." Well, folks, that day has finally arrived. After two years, I've made it painfully obvious to myself that there's really nothing I can do to help stave off AW's problems. The only person who can do that is Rick Noll, and he has made it painfully obvious that he isn't able, or willing, to do what it takes to fix said problems. As for me, I'm just tired. Tired of feeling forced to help a community that apparently has no interest in helping itself. Tired of depending on undependable people. Tired of watching people who are more interested in destroying each other than helping each other. And most of all, I'm tired of myself making empty promises that I know I can't keep. And so, today it all ends. Universal Town Network will be dropping off the face of the Net as Computerizer (UTN's host) wipes his web space in the coming weeks. The HQs will remain open, but will no longer be updated. The AWNews.org domain will expire on Sept. 19th, and the AWNews webspace will be shut down shortly thereafter. If anyone really wants to take on these projects in my place, feel free to contact me in AW (don't bother contacting me through the NGs, as I won't be reading them anymore), but considering the current demeanor of the community, I doubt I will find any serious takers. And as for me, I'm going to get back to what I should have been doing since I got here way back in 1996: building, exploring, and enjoying other people's hard work. After all, I know all too well the toils of a thankless job, so it's time I started thanking others for theirs. Farewell, AW Community. It was fun while it lasted. -- Goober King Posting in the newsgroupOct 3, 2002, 9:59am
Erm, this thread is over 3 yrs old! Check the date lately?
At any rate, I think you're missing the point of tourists. If AWI gave tourists all the same rights and privileges as citizens, then there'd be no reason for them to become citizens, and AWI would get no money. In fact, that's precisely why tourists are in the situation they are now, (being shut out of most worlds) because too many people were staying as tourists. The point of being a tourist is so that you can get a feel for the program and what it's capable of before becoming a citizen so you can use it to its fullest. Let's face facts, things have changed in AW. It would seem that Worlds,
Inc. and COF are on two opposite sides of the management spectrum when it comes to Public Relations. Whereas Worlds, Inc. had a "hands-off" policy towards chatting (they even put up a sign in GZ stating they didn't monitor for content and it was a "chat-at-your-own-risk" place), COF insists on "protecting" us from the all the naughty people out there. Whereas Protagonist and Co. would make regular visits to AWGZ to chat and hang with the commoners, COF is aloof and at most times unreachable (unless it involves money). Now, the point of this rant isn't to bash COF, (well, not the main point anyway *smirk*) it's to say that I've been considering an idea such as Johnny's for a while, altho not in the same format. Instead of a committee tho, we have Public Relations people who take surveys of people and/or go around the AW Universe and listen to people's ideas/problems/complaints. Then the PR guys would relay their findings and COF would (hopefully) take the necessary steps to correct/implement/help out with whatever the PR guys found. As Johnny stated, this would obviously need the backing of COF, cause if they're not interested, then there's really no point. Much like Protag, Dataman, and the others, if the average citizen (and tourist) of AW knew that they had a voice, and that that voice was being heard, then I definitely think COF would have a better chance of not only garnering new citizens, but also keeping a hold on the citizens that are already here. Then perhaps their mantra of "AWcom loves you! :)" would actually be true for a change! -- Goober King Could go on forever, but manages to stop somehow... odd. http://lavender.fortunecity.com/heat/318/index.html Town Road Rally!Dec 28, 1999, 9:22pm
