I think we need to consider starting an organized group of people who
intelligently address the problems the awcommunity is facing. With people
like jetta interested, and if we could get the support of others, we could
start a respectful group that tried to get changes made. This would NOT
involve bashing PKs for no reason, slandering employees of COF, or the
company itself. It would incur taking an active effort via telegrams,
e-mails, posts, builds - whatever we can do to bring this community to where
it needs to be.

Anyone interested, and I hope some of you are, please pass this along to
your friends (tourists welcomed to join, all they need is an e-mail
address).. Telegram or e-mail me (or reply here if you are interested.) If
I get a few people interested (which I hopefully will), we can create a main
build in active worlds and a website, and brainstorm some ideas for
community reform. I would also like anyone who has a good name for the
group to come forward and offer it.. Possibilities I was thinking of are:

AWReform
AWComRef
AWRevival

Thanks for listening to me!

Jude, sorry for not saying this in my original post. It was basically an
afterthought. It took a little time to organize my thoughts on this.

I think this discussion group is a really good idea. However, I also think
that, in order to truly effect change, it will need to have the blessing of
COF. We could discuss things and put together proposals, but unless COF
thinks it's a good idea and is willing to lend an ear and a certain degree
of authority, it would be tough to truly get things done. Now, please don't
interpret that as shooting the idea down. That's not what I'm saying at
all. I think that this is a really good idea. We just need to get COF
involved at the very beginning in order to make this an effective group.

What strikes me is that the AW community is very much like a real
community - especially given the fact that unlike most 'chat' programs, AW
has a real 'environment', with people, property, zoning etc. Given that, it
seems to me that what is in order is a form of 'government' - like a mayor's
office with an advisory council etc. Those are glorified terms for
committees, but you get the idea.

Obviously, because AW is owned by COF, they would need to have the final say
in anything. However, it seems to me that they may welcome the idea of
offloading some of the community management and dispute mediation to members
of the community itself. They may also like the idea of intelligently
organized and managed discussions that result in real suggestions in a
concise form (rather than having to wade through all of the postings on the
various boards to come up with ideas.) They could also bounce some of their
ideas off of the group to get a prelimary idea for how they will be received
by the community at large. If you view this as a kind of goverment, then
the creation of some by-laws would be a good idea. COF could review them
for approval and be able to request changes to them at any time.

I know that I've thrown out a bunch of ideas here, but let me see if I can
organize them a little more concisely:

What I'm envisioning is a form of governing committee with an elected
chairperson. The idea is that the committee could discuss changes,
suggestions etc. for the ActiveWorlds community (or perhaps just a single
'public' world). It could also discuss and make decisions/recommendations
about disputes. Those decisions/recommendations could be put in a concise
form and reviewed with someone from COF (preferably someone that COF would
make available - as a liason - so that there is basically one point of
contact.) Of course, it would be just as nice to have someone from COF on
the committee itself, but that is a matter of whether or not COF wants to do
that. I would also suggest involving the current Peace Keepers - making
them an extension of the committee, specializing in gathering information
and investigating disputes and then bringing their findings before the
committee for review/discussion. Of course, we could also find a plot of
land (probably in AW), build a meeting hall and meet there for regular
meetings. (After all, why not have your discussions right in AW as a
group.) Although, a separate discussion board would probably be a good idea
too.

My wish list would include 1) having COF review their ideas for changes to
AW, the browser, new features etc. with the group and getting feedback
before making decisions 2) perhaps giving the Peace Keepers some
enforcement authority (according to mutually agreed-upon rules) in order to
delete abandoned property etc. 3) (this one is really just a personal one
for me, but I'd love to meet some of people who have made this really cool
Cyberverse. I would love to take a tour of the studios and see what they do
and how they come up with some of this stuff.)

Let me know your thoughts on this. I invite your comments. Please feel
free to shoot holes in this or make suggestions/recommendations. (Be kind
though - I do have feelings.) I'd also love to hear what COF may have to
say about this idea.

Thanks,
John

That's actually a good idea. I'm in- even though I think it's still a good
idea to accuse Rick and JP of being gay and then putting pictures up all
over AW- but I didn't do thgat, so it's no matter to me. ;-)

Let's face facts, things have changed in AW. It would seem that Worlds,
Inc. and COF are on two opposite sides of the management spectrum when
it comes to Public Relations.

Whereas Worlds, Inc. had a "hands-off" policy towards chatting (they
even put up a sign in GZ stating they didn't monitor for content and it
was a "chat-at-your-own-risk" place), COF insists on "protecting" us
from the all the naughty people out there. Whereas Protagonist and Co.
would make regular visits to AWGZ to chat and hang with the commoners,
COF is aloof and at most times unreachable (unless it involves money).

Now, the point of this rant isn't to bash COF, (well, not the main point
anyway *smirk*) it's to say that I've been considering an idea such as
Johnny's for a while, altho not in the same format. Instead of a
committee tho, we have Public Relations people who take surveys of
people and/or go around the AW Universe and listen to people's
ideas/problems/complaints. Then the PR guys would relay their findings
and COF would (hopefully) take the necessary steps to
correct/implement/help out with whatever the PR guys found.

As Johnny stated, this would obviously need the backing of COF, cause if
they're not interested, then there's really no point. Much like Protag,
Dataman, and the others, if the average citizen (and tourist) of AW knew
that they had a voice, and that that voice was being heard, then I
definitely think COF would have a better chance of not only garnering
new citizens, but also keeping a hold on the citizens that are already
here. Then perhaps their mantra of "AWcom loves you! :)" would actually
be true for a change!

Community? You mean this slobbering mess with several groups attempting in vain
to clean it up? the only way I can see to restore the community is wait for the
next generation to take over. Anyway, thats my eep-like statement of the day.
thank you all for putting up with it.
