Help us!

It seems there is a serious problem in many worlds with tourists littering
with pornography. One such place was in Alpha World at the NASA momument
site. There are others.

Thinking about a solution to this problem, I recall a few years ago that AW
added a new feature to the program - a box for email addresses when you log
in as a tourist. I think at the time the explanation given for this was it
was going to be used for advertising. I could be wrong, but that's what I
recall. Then, I thought about how it used to be, where non-citizens were
issued a number like citizens after they gave their email address (and maybe
some other information like their name).

Tourists are worth bothering about, they make Alpha World alive and
prosperous, along with other worlds. Tourists are the future of AW. I
don't know of anyone who disagrees with that-if there are, please speak up.
We need to find a way to keep them accountable and that's why I've posted
here. I don't know much about programming, but I figure there has to be a
way to use that email box, there has to be a way to have proper identity for
tourists and information from the company emailed to them before they start
their AW experience so that they are aware of the laws, rules, expectations,
limitations, etc. I'm not sure how the pricing would work (trial period),
or how the tourist numbering system would work, and it might be that you fix
it so that tourists can only build within a certain coordinate range. (If
you can fix it so citizens can't build within a certain range at gz then it
should be able to be done at other coords).

The main thing is this, people please post your ideas for a solution to this
problem. The more people that post and the quicker we can come up with a
good solution, the sooner we might see tourists again. : )

In terms of the stuff at the memorial site for th Columbia... that incident
was not unique in AWTeen. We have been having a problem with a specific
citizen posting that same pornography... I saw the very same citizen,
posing as a tourist... posting the very same pornography. Considering it all
happened in such a small time frame, its logical to think it was the same
person.. ie a citizen posting both under their cit, and as a tourist.

Most tourists who are serious about the program, are good people that show a
true interest in learning the browser, and learning about the community.
Tourists as a whole aren't bad - I would say its the citizens that enjoy
posing AS tourists, that are the main problem.

nobody at nowhere.com as an email address. My husband uses it once in a while
and so do I. Cuts down on spam and is acceptable by most websites. If
somebody wants to post porn, I don't think there is too much that can be
done about it, unfortunately, cept maybe people constantly visiting the area
and looking for any unusual signs, etc. Sad I know. ;-"<

The problem is that these morons do it just to get attention, and by
posting the cit names, that's exactly what they get.

How do I know? Well, while I was at the AWTeen Memorial working on my
AWNews article, the very same citizen who had put up the porn (which had
since been cleaned up) suddenly showed up as a tourist and yelled out
something to the effect of "goober, don't write anything about the porn
or people will laugh at me!" and then immediately disappeared.
Obviously, it was a sad attempt at reverse psychology, but since I had
no intention of mentioning the porn in the first place, it only
reinforced my reasons for not writing about it.

The more attention these fools get, the more likely they'll keep doing
what they're doing. If they get ignored, then they'll eventually move on
to greener and more gullible pastures.

I totally disagree. They need a good "spanking". Letting their peers know what they are doing will help to curb it. Letting AWI know that you do not appreciate it also helps....and if you tell them(AWI) that AND supply names and numbers to them that will help also. we need to just NOT PUT UP WITH IT ANYMORE. Let them know they are ruining OUR fun time. and it's time for them to take responsibility for their actions. We also need to get rid of the annonimity of this software. "If you don't want US knowing WHO you are then we don't even want you in here" attitude is needed.

Then of course it causes an uproar wich excites them. If it was mentioned

Adopting the same psychology as one would with prank phone calls is what
should be done here. Put the phone down, cut the problem at the source.
Its no fun just to hear someone pick up a phone them put it back down again
when they realise what you are doing. Its the same in this scenario

I never really lobbyed for or against tourists, I did pay the extra money to
allow then into my world figuring it was a reasonably priced option, but I
have spent plenty of time policing and deleting offensive content exclusivly
by touists and do find it distressing that it is almost impossible to
identify who it is doing it or why. I always felt that as a tourist there is
enough to do to help you decide whether or not you want to get a cit, and
even if you wanted to try it you could get a cit for a month to see, its
under 10 bucks. While many use it to discover others use it as a tool to
hide their identity and wreak havok, its a difficult debate. One thing ive
always assumed is the way it was set up before must have been costing AW
instead of producing new cits, and the way they made it is more financially
sound, and thats what is neccessary to keep the lights on. I could be wrong?
I would bet though, that the people who do misuse the tourist mode are not
new to aw and interested in becoming cits.They either are already cits or
are more concerned with remaining anonomous. Too bad they ruin it for others
and the people that have to clean it all up. Just my thoughts. Take Care,

I purposely didn't give the name for...well... the reasons stated by Goober.
The only people that need to know the persons name is AWI =) Otherwise, the
problem is being taken care of in AWTeen... and if AWI takes care of it,
well that's good enough. Giving people a good moral bashing in the public
spot light doesn't usually affect people in the way you want it to. Often
the person gains more self esteem through the trouble they cause, because it
gets recognized... no matter how good or bad the recognition is.

Why have the ability to change name?... Why do people find the need to change
their chosen name? Tourist or Citizen
Now, I can answer some of this;
1. such as two users sharing a computer.... solution: two installs...
have the install program ask for the user to select their name prior to install and
then have the program installed into a directory <c:\Activeworlds\Name> ...
Can the name be picked up and put in the .ini or within the program? I have no idea,
I am not a programmer. I am sure there are ways around this, but when it is found
that a user is circumventing, then correct them. Lets work toward solving problems
as they happen and make it so the Tourists and Citizen population can grow.

2. such as to get into mischief... Solution: Remove the ability to change name.
A visiting Tourists gets known by the name they have chosen and would carry that
name over into citizenship. Now, I know that there may be special times that a user may
want to change their name upon registering or after they have registered ie: they
discover they have chosen a name that can be duplicated like the L I 1 problem,
so fix that by changing the chat window font or explain the problem during the name
selecting process. Special name changing cases should be requested by the user and
handled by AWI staff.

In the real world most alias are used by those that want to hide, some for good reason
but most for malicious reasons, why not prevent this practice from entering Virtual
Reality? Any of the upstanding Citizens out there are well known by the names they use
and would stand behind their names in a responsible fashion why not have the
mischievous ones also carry their names around proudly? I am all for mischief and fun
but this idea might prevent malicious damage and let the malicious users know they
can and will be held accountable.

That's what cit numbers are there for, you can't change them.

Yes.. but Tourist do not have numbers.. If they are checking out the program,
why do they want to change their names? and once registered, why would a Citizen
choose to log in as a tourist or even change their name? Do they do this to hide
whom they are so they can not be held accountable?
