The Problem With Tourists

Feb 13, 2003, 10:25am
I have snipped to only include the part of this post that I am commenting on

Why have the ability to change name?... Why do people find the need to change
their chosen name? Tourist or Citizen
Now, I can answer some of this;
1. such as two users sharing a computer.... solution: two installs...
have the install program ask for the user to select their name prior to install and
then have the program installed into a directory <c:\Activeworlds\Name> ...
Can the name be picked up and put in the .ini or within the program? I have no idea,
I am not a programmer. I am sure there are ways around this, but when it is found
that a user is circumventing, then correct them. Lets work toward solving problems
as they happen and make it so the Tourists and Citizen population can grow.

2. such as to get into mischief... Solution: Remove the ability to change name.
A visiting Tourists gets known by the name they have chosen and would carry that
name over into citizenship. Now, I know that there may be special times that a user may
want to change their name upon registering or after they have registered ie: they
discover they have chosen a name that can be duplicated like the L I 1 problem,
so fix that by changing the chat window font or explain the problem during the name
selecting process. Special name changing cases should be requested by the user and
handled by AWI staff.

In the real world most alias are used by those that want to hide, some for good reason
but most for malicious reasons, why not prevent this practice from entering Virtual
Reality? Any of the upstanding Citizens out there are well known by the names they use
and would stand behind their names in a responsible fashion why not have the
mischievous ones also carry their names around proudly? I am all for mischief and fun
but this idea might prevent malicious damage and let the malicious users know they
can and will be held accountable.

Yes.. but Tourist do not have numbers.. If they are checking out the program,
why do they want to change their names? and once registered, why would a Citizen
choose to log in as a tourist or even change their name? Do they do this to hide
whom they are so they can not be held accountable?

The Problem With Tourists

My suggestion was made to disable the ability to change name, within the
program... and to disable the ability for a cit to change to tourist mode. Thus
preventing those few obnoxious users from hiding while they perform
malicious deeds. I also find it hard to 'know' a user by their cit# since
I mostly see their names and when they misbehave, they are usually the type
that are bright enough to leave before the Cit# can be checked... :))

Tie the cit name to the cit#... reinstalling to get around it as a cit, would require
the purchase of another cit... and yes tourist could reinstall but that would put
more work on them if they wanted to cause malicious mischief.
The main reason for my post was to point out a possible way for AWI to let
tourists into the main worlds to look around without having the GZs put up
with the troublemakers. I am sure AWI are interested in hearing our suggestions
so they have more ideas that might help them solve problems that users
complain about... I like to see suggested solutions presented along with a
complaint, even if the solution might not work out well... :)) It is easy to
post that we like or don't like something, it takes more thought to look for
a possible solution.... MIKsam

The-World Bingo world

I think people have to accept some common sense responsibility for personal information that they give to others on the internet...
There is no way AWI can tell a user what they can or can not say to others about their personal info...

I liken this to going to a store to purchase a newspaper and thinking the store owner should be able to control with whom you
discuss personal information, during the time it takes you to read the paper... Personal security is just that, 'PERSONAL'...

Gate Censorship Totally Unnescessary

Mar 15, 2003, 10:45am
hmmm... I have checked the website concerning conduct and I do not see
that debates are mentioned in the rules...

example of a 'possible' conversation;
user1: I bought a new computer today :)
USER2: What did you buy?
user1: Deell
Hey Joe: Deell?
USER2: I had one and it was nothing but problems
user1: Well my brother had one for a year and it worked great
USER2: Deell should have gone out of business a long time ago IMO.
Hey Joe what do you think of Deell?
Hey Joe: The "Cow" is better

This is an example of a debate between three users just to pass the time until
someone moves things back to questions about the program.
No offense is intended by this post.
In MY Opinion chat is chat if done in a respectful way without demeaning
another, name calling or swearing. Yes, there are other worlds but if new rules
are to be applied, then AWI should include the words
'NO debates in AWGate' on the conduct webpage so all users would know.
