Actually this is a new variant of the Netsky virus which maskarades itself as a mailer daemon and claims the mail is "returned".
It has nothing to do with our Pittsburgh fellow (IP is from CA).

57 came out after I discovered some problems with the clicking in 56 (which was the latest released version. I asked all Christmas Hunt participant to upgrade to 57 due to this bug. Nobody complained yet and I run 20+ worlds on 57 without a hiccup!
I'm very hesitant to tell a world owner "ditch that version" especially without enough knowledge (being a beta user or not).
Of course it is your call and I won't interfere with it, except I KNOW it is a working release (and not a beta) :) OTOH I won't install 63 or 64 until it is an official release because I have users depending on my service and I don't want them to be a guinea pig :)

I went through on your website regarding to your world hosting.
I'm not a beginner in this field so I have to ask questions which the website (and none of your posts) doesn't answer:

1, What is your connection type (Cable, ADSL, SDSL, Leased Line, T1, etc) ?
2, What is your upstream and downstream speed?
3, Do you share this bandwidth with another service (or yourself)?
4, What is your server machine (configurations, OS, etc)?
5, Do you have another servers/services running on that machine?
6, What kind of firewall do you have?
7, How do you protect the worlds database?
8, What kind of backup and how frequently do you make them?
9, Do you provide any off site backups?
10, Does the world owners have the admin access available?
11, How do you resolve the registry loads? (FTP, email, etc)

Those are the minimum requirements you should mention before you do world hosting.

It wouldn't speed up the server's connection:(
You need a fixed IP for the server, so load sharing won't effect a single server just the overall performance and the download on his side of course.

Best Firewall?

Linux firewall setup is not a cakewalk - especially for those who are not familiar with Linux and/or the IP protocol.

I'm an advocate of the multi-layer protections:

For the incoming protection the NAT (Network Address Translation) routers fairly adequate. You can get those routers for around $50-$100 range, almost all of them have decent port forwarding features and some even have stateful packet inspection. I did an exhaustive testing on about 15 different models and almost all did a good job.

For outgoing protection I personally use ZoneAlarm Pro and it suits my need. (I'm not using it's web protecting features like popup blocking but YMMV). I did block all unused ports within my HW router too to both directions.

For general protection - turn off all services in the OS you are not using to minimize the vulnerability of the given OS.

Never open unknown files/attachments and be paranoid even from the known sources (as Ananas proposes in other threads - run the trojan detector/virus checker on the newly acquired files before open them ).

Of course good security doesn't come free - don't expect to get that one :)

Linux firewall is not a simple thing if you are not familiar with it.
OTOH getting ZoneAlarm Pro is a good choice - it gives you a really fine details of control on the layman terms :)
I still suggest to have a NAT router (Linksys, DLink, SMC, you name it) in front of your computers.

Almost all cable/DSL router on the market will do a decent job for you. Most of them really plug and play but if you run any server behind it, you need to learn to tweak them (fairly simple operation).

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT CYCLE

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT CYCLE

by

David Lubar

Software doesn't just appear on the shelves by magic. That program shrink-wrapped inside the box along with the indecipherable manual and twelve-paragraph disclaimer notice actually came to you by way of an elaborate path through the most rigid quality control methods on the planet. Here, shared for the first time with the general public, are the inside details of the program development cycle.

1. Programmer produces code he believes is bug-free.

2. Product is tested. Twenty bugs are found.

3. Programmer fixes ten of the bugs and explains to the testing. department that the other ten aren't really bugs.

4. Testing department finds that five of the fixes didn't work and discovers fifteen new bugs.

5. See 3.

6. See 4.

7. See 5.

8. See 6.

9. See 7.

10. See 8.

11. Due to marketing pressure and extremely pre-mature product announcement based on over-optimistic programming schedule, the product is released.

12. Users find 137 new bugs.

13. Original programmer, having cashed his royalty check, is nowhere to be found.

14. Newly-assembled programming team fixes almost all of the 137 bugs, but introduces 456 new ones.

15. Original programmer sends underpaid testing department a postcard from Fiji. Entire testing department quits.

16. Company is bought in hostile takeover by competitor using profits from their latest release, which had 783 bugs.

17. New CEO is brought in by board of directors. He hires programmer to redo program from scratch.

18. Programmer produces code he believes is bug-free.
