Alpha World has been down for days now. And they call this "routine
maintenance"?? Let's get real, here. The last time Alpha World has been
down for this long was years ago. They should tell us what is taking so
long.

Think its called a prodump backup

You need to close a world to backup a propdump? It shouldn't take days to
back up Alpha World's propdump if you do it through the world server. Even
if it does, would this imply that they haven't backed up the propdump in a
matter of years. :P

And AWI, as they've claimed and proved, backup Alphaworld everyday unless
they stopped somewhere in the past couple years.

I think they might be upgrading their hard drives since the world database
is growing to a critical mass. The AW Mapper is also down...a clue O_o?

Either way I can't imagine what would be taking so long. Maybe they forgot
AW was down =P

From AW's network status page:

"Network Status

AlphaWorld will be unavailable until 6/10/04 as it undergoes routine
maintenance and backup. All other systems are operating normally.

If you need technical support, please send a detailed email to
support at activeworlds.com.

the backwards system. When telling time do you say 34.10.12 for 10 hours 34
minutes 12 seconds also? ;-)

(shrugs) What can I tell ya hon? Somebody, long, long ago invented that
system. Not me. And no.... we say "10 hours, 34 minutes and 12 seconds"...
we usually do not abbreviate it. Or, at least, nobody I know abbreviates it.

hurmmm im in highschool and the way we learned it and MLA says to sue it is
MM/DD/YYYY

it makes more sense to use DD/MM/YYYY because it is smallest increments to
largest...but the way I am being raised its MM/DD/YYYY

I avoid the problem by not using either format. June 10, 2004 works for
me :)

I do not say either system is better, but to avoid confusion one should
start globally use one of them.
dd/mm/yyyy is of course the more logical way as it goes from "small to big"
and not"medium-small-big"

If only locally used I do not care how people display things dm/my/ydyy or
whatever, but places like internet where people attend from various places
in world it can cause confusion.

MM DD YY is only used in english speaking countries, especially USA...
most of the world uses DD MM YYYY :)

because it is the international standard (ISO 8601).
In my own country the notion is day.month.year.
