Would be nice if all the flames of the past were removed. Most other
newsgroups clear out messages once they are a week or two old - I see no
reason why this should not apply here. It would also resolve the issue of
my request to get various postings deleted, which has never been followed
through. When asked the question "which ones do you want deleted" my reply
is "don't you mean which hundreds?"

Sure they will accept an upgrade - but you should contact AWC directly
because its a special arrangement. Tell the guy to email

I prevoiusly reported that I was having constant AW crashes since 3.2 was
released, and thought perhaps it was some incompatibility between the ATI
Rage Fury Pro video card and the latest version.
The bug was literally a bug... a spider decided to try out a home in my
PC's processor fan, and both it and the fan faired very badly as a result.
Bug removed, fan stored to working order, and no more crashes.

Is it not already invented? Its called x-ray and cat-scan photography!
I've got no doubt at all that with-in a very few years the cameras will be
affordable to the professional photographer, and not long after be around

I sent off my beam set to AW (Mountain Myst) to be added to Alpha - it got
lost in traffic somewhere and I haven't heard much since. It would be a
great addition to add some style to basic shoe-box building.
On the other theme of this string - I still enjoy AW and creating, building,
modelling and having people over. Love the improvements as they come and
simply ignore any negatives. You can hit me with a brick and I will still
try and find something good to say about it. :o)
And I even like the newbies too - they add to fun and always give the
opportunity for a new chat.
Merry Holidays and Best to the New Year for all of you...

I'd pay US$30 a year. I wouldn't pay more.
Then a year later, if they made another increase to US$40 per year, I would
still think it reasonable and probably renew.

After seeing the huge 2800 worlds with the release of the "home page" worlds
I naturally assumed there would be a big drop once all the trial period
expired. Sure enough they did drop very quickly. But the drop continued
and after getting down into the 1400s I decided to keep notes. This was the
result:
30/01/2002: 1341
31/01/2002: 1319
01/02/2002: 1297
03/02/2002: 1277
07/02/2002: 1266
02/03/2002: 1247
10/03/2002: 1222
My biggest problem with AW right now is the inablity of tourists to enter
worlds without the world being enabled to do so. I wrote to AW by email to
arrange this for my world and got this response:
>Hello Justin -
>
>At this time tourist access orders are not being accepted. Our community
>will be alerted when this changes.
>
>Sincerely,
>
>Noelle Caterino Customer Service

Last time I checked the worlds that could take tourists are AWGate, A!!CT,
America, Amigos3, Arisia, Ataco, AWSingle, Grimm, Hole, Horizon, Italcity,
Leaves, Librarea, Olympe, Singles, Southbay, Whitewav, Storage, Spadtest,
and most recently AWSchool. How tourists are suppose to know this is beyond
me, but even so AW Alpha World is NOT on that list. As far as I know, the
only world on the list that is open to public building including tourists is
America (? or it was a while ago).
I know its been said already, but I just cannot see how AW will grow, and
going by AW Management's letters to us they have not given any comment on
how they plan to achieve growth of users. They did talk about profitabilty
and longevity, but without a growing userbase I can't see how they will
achieve either in the long term.
I've also kept one eye open for the small communities that existed in
privately owned worlds, and those communities are now missing. Worlds like
Castles, !Friends, Y2000, and BluPearl would always have nice little
gatherings, but that is not the case anymore. Only the "cult" (mostly
Gorian) worlds seem to be keeping their communities intact. I can only
assume that loss of users and inabilty to attract new users, including
tourists, is the cause.
What to do? I don't know - I've already sent my emails to AWC. I guess
just sit back and wait. One thing is certain though: when my world comes
up for renewal I won't pay $800 for a P80 that no-one uses.

New low figure (note that this statistic is taken as the lowest observed
figure, and usually varies upward depending on the time of day):
13/03/2002: 1210
I think the old system of allowing tourists to build was fine, giving a
further incentive to register to preserve what they have built for
prosperity. It also gave them something to do while they mulled over the
prospect of paying. And finally, gave them the opportunity to really test
out the part of the "chat program" that is its biggest strength - building
with (relative) ease.

Taken from a report about viruses:
"Hoaxes are not viruses, but are usually deliberate or unintentional
Internet messages warning people about a virus or other malicious software
program. They often ask the reader forward the warning to as many people as
possible and contain fabricated comments from officials.
Some may recommend "fixes" that cause damage, such as deleting a file
necessary to the operation of the user's computer or some program on it."
Sounds like a "hoax" to me.
Mark, unless you can give a better explanation and proof then you are
commiting an internet crime in many countries.

The recognition of avs all about your world for world owners *might* be a
good thing, but it makes me wonder about some of the wider issues.
Sometimes I see someone is in my world by looking at the world count, but
don't know where they are. Does the global parameters now mean I can use
the bot to find anyone? Seems like a bit of privacy invasion?
Also, how will this effect running a bot in a huge world like Alpha World?

There has been a sudden influx of Aussie tourists at the Gate and I got
curious about where all these folks were coming from. Lo and behold they
had watched a television show about the internet called "The Future Just
happened" which featured a 3 minute article about Active Worlds. Although
not entirely positive about the "community" friendliness, it did come across
as saying AW was a "cool" place to visit.
You can watch the program in full direct from the net at
http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/static/in_depth/programmes/2001/future/defa
ult.stm
Select Prog 3, and unless you want to watch the whole show from the start
scroll through to about 30 minutes into the show (its live streaming so
there is no wait).
More interesting was that this article was able to attract so many people,
and yet apart from mentioning "Active Worlds" once, there was no mention of
where to get it!
PS: To watch the show with decent frames per second I had to close all my
other running applications.

Why do you want to double up on ObjectsD'? They are already going well and
have a whole world dedicated to free objects where you can view what the
objects will look like in world.
If you are thinking to make an alternative because you do not like the way
the web page operates, why not pool resources and offer to ObjectsD' owners
something to improve?

I tried switch video mode from DirectX 7 to DirectX 8, with a resulting
framerate of almost double what I was getting previously. The downside is
the backdrop is screwing up in any world with a backdrop of any average or
longer width. It appears not to be able to figure out how to render the
back drop in the full circle around... leaving a gap that appears and
disappears depending on where I am facing... and squashing the image in or
out as I turn in a circle.
Anyone else have this and found a solution?
Using ATI Rage Fury Pro, 32 Meg Ram.

PII 300 MMX, 128 Meg RAM, Win98SE...
I went to AlphaWorld, Broadway, and AWSchool, where the screwy backdrops all
show.
The backdrop in BluPearl did not screw up, and I know the backdrop there is
a lot shorter than average.
By the lack of responses on other people having the same problem, I think
the problem is iscolated to my video card, and I guess I will have to heed
the warning given in the Video setting for DX8 "not recommended for older
cards" :o( - unless someone has some bright ideas?

I've never known the 5 on the num pad *NOT* to work like this, and I've used
it often whenever needing to inspect an object up very close. If it was
temporarily absent between 2.1 and 3.0 I didn't notice.

Why is the survey surveying such a wide area now? I ask bot to survey 1
cell and it surveys 25 sectors just to retrieve one cell? Also... the
back-up world scripts I think still work - but the bot seems to be reporting
its progress every second?

Does this upgrade fix the worldbackup scripts that make the bot accounce
what it is doing every second?
Also, when using the Survey Manager and requesting the bot to Add a Cell,
Sector or Zone to the Project, why does the bot need to survey 40 x 40
co-ords? Its a long wait, especially when only a small area is needed.

Alex,
As already said by Goober, I really didn't mean anything by my questions
other than asking questions, and in no way were the questions a criticism of
your excellent program. I find Xelagot a very fine bot and I use it
consantly, and am very gratiful for it being free.
For question 1 you may have replied "its a new feature of the script to keep
you constantly informed". On question 2 you might have replied that AWI new
SDK enforces the size of each query. I have no clue on either because my
programming skills are not yet advanced enough to implement SDK into code.
Point being, in both cases my observations and questions do not at all
relate to bugs of Xelagot, because in both cases Xelagot continues to
perform exactly and correctly.
Also, I posed the questions in the newsgroup because I figured your answers
would be useful to everyone using your bot, not just me.
I apologise if I inadvertantly phrased my questions poorly.
Regards, Justin

WOW - seems like a lot of wheeling and dealing going on, and I would really
love to be a "fly on the wall", but as simply a user of the AW Broswer I
realise none of this is my concern - still I can't help being curious.
Although not appearing as a major threat to AWC's operations, the legal
action cannot help what must already be a very strained and tight budget.

I have never encountered any instance of anyone having had their whispers or
telegrams intercepted by a third party in years of using Active Worlds.
I know many instances of people making whispers or telegrams public, after
receiving them from the sender deliberately.
I think any person revealing things told to them in private and in
confidence is despicable.
The injustice of the above pales to insignificance when someone "reveals"
things not told to them, but things invented to make someone else look bad.
This is compounded when someone falsifies or alters documents (chatlogs,
telegrams, etc.) to support the invented revelations. May I dare suggest
there are degrees of humiliation?
