server log file bug

Dec 17, 2002, 2:35am
[please cross-post to beta]

I have come upon a very problematic bug in the world server log files.
(linux version, of course)

Whenever a user presses ctrl + enter in the object description or commands
field of the object properties dialogue, the command and description change
are logged word for word to the log file, including any line breaks.

Where normally one line in the log file would equal one event, this odd
behavior allows 1, 2, 3, up to cell data limit of new lines to equal one
event. These lines aren't always totally blank. Some people with weird
building habits prefer to put each command on its own line. So i end up with
2-3 lines of their command or description in the log file.

You can see where this would throw off any attempts to analyze or dissect
the log files with a program. Some of the log file lines are good, some are
broken up and need to be stuck back together, and some are blank and need to
be ignored. As I'm trying to write a program to handle and look at log
files, currently about 90% of the code is just used trying to weed-out the
bogus lines, and doing a bad job of it.

What needs to be done? Have the server remove the new line sequence from the
description and command fields before writing the event to the log file.
This would save a lot of headaches and give the log files a purpose (as
they're pretty much unusable in the current format). It would be much
appreciated.

Regards,
Jeremy

Yes, I recieved several "urgent" messages from the NOC where my server is
co-located.

It's too bad the server is running linux, and I'd never put anything M$ on a
server (that's franky very stupid).

I've seen a little bit of a slow down today, but nothing major. Guess it
sucks for those MS SQL people.

New Worm Rocking the Internet - UDP Port 1434

Jan 26, 2003, 6:17pm
Well, there have been several well known bugs with linux servers.

ie: the mod_ssl/Apache web server with the linux.slapper worm which struck
my server

However, if you read up on this bug, you'll find the the problem was not in
Apache itself but in a SSL crypto library from OpenSSL that the Apache
server used. This library is in use with many program, all of which need to
be patched with the latest version of the SSL library. Of course, the
programmers were aware of the bug for over a month before the worm took off.

There have also been root exploits with Sendmail and the wu-FTP server.

All in all, much more secure than Windows. Where as Microsoft releases at
least 1 securty bullitin every week, Apache has had so few security issues
that I can count them on my figers.

Moral of the story: Got Linux?

I've never seen this before and it sounds really weird that your object

Try stopping the world first (with the admin tool), then try to take a

You might also contact AW support (support at activeworlds.com), though I doubt

No, prob not isolated to just ISS.. I've had this happen in a world and OP I

Website Question

Mar 24, 2003, 1:45am
The blank index.html file is probably the simplest solution.. however you
have a few other obvious (and not so obvious options)

First you could rename "love.html" to "index.html" (unless you have some
really good reason for keeping it named "love.html")

Second, you could change the name of the file that the web server looks for
as an index. This relies on the fact that you are using the Apache web
server. To do this create a file named ".htaccess" (this file name is a
standard name, although your administrator could can change it). Inside the
file type the following on the first line:
DirectoryIndex love.html love.htm index.html index.htm

You could also turn off the automatic directory listings all together. To do
this create the ".htaccess" file and include the following. (this also
relies on your web server being the Apache server)
Options -Indexes

The .htaccess files are really the 'proper' way to go as creating a blank
index.html document may be simpler, but can leave visitors confused when all
they find is a blank page. If you must use the blank document method, at
least put this HTML tag in the <head>...</head> section of the page.
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="2;URL=love.html">

This will cause the browser to jump to your "love.html" page automatically
after 2 seconds. So, you can put something like "Redirecting, please
wait..." on the blank index.html document and the user will be directed to
the correct page automatically.

Hope I've helped you out, and not confused you....

Jeremy

You can't protect them on the client side without writing a custom
application to view them that does not allow saving and dows not allow
screen captures. (a formitable task, not worth the benifits...)

So, you can settle for the second best way of protecting images... use the
Apache rewrite engine.

Although the code for such things isn't very complex (it's pretty much cut

those who don't have access to flash or know CSS/DHTML. It looks like the
code that comes out is very clean. Though I'll probably never use it ( I

World AW IP Change, and AWMapper down.

May 28, 2003, 7:21pm
DNS does not always take time to update.

A DNS record has a "TTL" (a Time To Live). This is how long it will persist
in the cache of other DNS servers. This value can be anything from 1 second
to several weeks. Smaller values increase the load on your DNS server
(obviously more lookups are needed), but smaller values also allow you to
update and switch IP addresses more quickly.

Active worlds Deluxe

Aug 13, 2003, 9:23pm
Obviously I need to break this down for you to prove my point....

Let's take a closer look, shall we?

> You get More feature and More Chat And More world and MORE Citizen and All
> Of them Like in Oringal Active world
-Incorrect capitalization on just about every other word. Anyone who has any
sort of grasp on the english language knows that this is incorrect. Can you
name for me any other foregin language that capitalizes there sentences like
that?
- Agreement problems. "You get more feature" Feature should be Features.
- No punctuation. Again, anyone who has learned any english at all knows
how to stick a period at the end of a sentence.
- Run on sentence. There are three "and"s in a row. This should be a comma
seperated list.
- It's called "Active Worlds" not "Active World", get it straight.
- "Like in Orginal" is incorrect. It should be "like in the orginal."

>It's free
- I think this is the only correct sentence in the whole post. (If you don't
count the incorrect use of puncutation around it.)

> it good
- Have we gone back to cave men?

I think I can stop right there. Please, don't even try to use the "maybe his
primary language isn't english" crap. Even *if* english isn't his primary
language, that post was a sorry excuse for writing. People from foregin
countries who learn english learn the rules of capitalization. I might add
that capitalization rules are the simpliest english grammar rules that
exist.

The way the first sentence was capitalized proves to me that this person
natively speaks english and is just too lazy or ignorant to use the language
properly.

If you use the word "server" in a sentence, you should almost always include
the word "linux" in your sentence as well.

Linux is the *only* operating system I would ever use for running a server.

Go get yourself an ISO of RH 9, and unlock the *real* power of Apache.
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/

Quit using stupid XP pro, or next time some worm/virus starts making it's
way around the internet, your server will fall victim.

[View Quote] Simplify:

[ 2x^2 + x - 1 2x^2 - 5x + 3 ] [6x^2 + x - 2 ]
[ ------------ X ------------- ] / [-------------]
[ x^2 - 1 2x^2 - 7x + 3 ] [3x^2 - 7x - 6]

Now according to my maths teacher... these questions require a 'bit' of
Quadratic solution finding... ha, yeah right...

[ 2x^2 + x - 1 2x^2 - 5x + 3 ] [ 6x^2 + x - 2 ]
[ (2x - 1)(x + 1) (2x - 3) (x - 1) ] [(3x + 2)(2x - 1) ]
[ --------------- X ---------------- ] / [ --------------- ]
[ x^2 - 1 2x^2 - 7x + 3 ] [ 3x^2 - 7x - 6 ]
[ (x + 1)(x - 1) (2x - 1)(x - 3) ] [ (3x + 2)(x - 3) ]

There we are... the quadratics, now rip out the top line of each which is a
demo working...

[ (2x - 1)(x + 1) (2x - 3) (x - 1) ] [(3x + 2)(2x - 1) ]
[ --------------- X ---------------- ] / [ --------------- ]
[ (x + 1)(x - 1) (2x - 1)(x - 3) ] [ (3x + 2)(x - 3) ]

Now in the first 2nd level bracket, group the top and bottom row of terms
together using standard multiplication of fraction methods.

[ (2x - 1)(x + 1)(2x - 3)(x - 1) ] [(3x + 2)(2x - 1) ]
[ ------------------------------- ] / [ --------------- ]
[ (x + 1)(x - 1)(2x - 1)(x - 3) ] [ (3x + 2)(x - 3) ]

Now cancel out the like terms in the numerator and denominator.

2x -1 is the first to go...

[ (CANCELED)(x + 1)(2x - 3)(x - 1) ] [(3x + 2)(2x - 1) ]
[ --------------------------------- ] / [ --------------- ]
[ (x + 1)(x - 1)(CANCELED)(x - 3) ] [ (3x + 2)(x - 3) ]

Second to be removed is (x + 1)...

[ (CANCELED)(2x - 3)(x - 1) ] [(3x + 2)(2x - 1) ]
[ -------------------------- ] / [ --------------- ]
[ (CANCELED)(x - 1)(x - 3) ] [ (3x + 2)(x - 3) ]

Then x - 1

[ (2x - 3)(CANCELED) ] [(3x + 2)(2x - 1) ]
[ ------------------ ] / [ --------------- ]
[ (CANCELED)(x - 3) ] [ (3x + 2)(x - 3) ]

Not forgeting the divisor, remove 3x + 2

[ (2x - 3) ] [ (CANCELED)(2x - 1) ]
[ -------- ] / [ ------------------ ]
[ (x - 3) ] [ (CANCELED)(x - 3) ]

Leaving us with....

[ (2x - 3) ] [(2x - 1) ]
[ -------- ] / [ ------- ]
[ (x - 3) ] [ (x - 3) ]

The we times and flip the division giving us...

[ (2x - 3) ] [ (x - 3) ]
[ -------- ] X [ ------- ]
[ (x - 3) ] [ 2x - 1) ]

x - 3 and x - 3 cancel out leaving us with.......

[ (2x - 3) ]
[ -------- ]
[ 2x - 1) ]

Which is, the correct answer >:) This took about half an hour to do the
ruddy question to start with (and even longer to type it out in here!
lol... question 2 of 5 done.. on to #3)

And THAT my friends, is why you should think twice about taking A2 pure
mathmatics... (This is A2 P4)

Report: Microsoft dominance poses security risk

Sep 26, 2003, 9:07pm
Find the original article and related material at:

http://news.com.com/2009-7355_3-5082632.html?tag=fd_lede

"The draft of the report asserts that Microsoft's problems in securing its
products and the ubiquity of those technologies result in a hazard for the
U.S. economy and industry, which increasingly relies on the Internet and
computers for critical functions."

Wow! Someone is a genius..... I mean, if we all use the same OS and someone
finds a flaw (in software that is notorious for being insecure, mind you) ,
it makes massive exploits (such as CodeRed, SoBig,Welchia...etc) possible
and that's a major security problem. Is it that had to see? Yet everyone is
still anal retentive about switching away from Windows and Microsoft. If
people had any intelligence, they'd be running from Microsoft like it was
the plague.

I'm just glad someone has got the BALLS to step up and say it....

.....Other opinions welcome....

You mean that great little DCOM exploit?

For me, no little "tidbit" has enough value to me to overcome the glaringly
obvious security issues.

You didn't mention anything about the issues I raised though. You would
rather play your games and let your computer be a part of a dDos scheme that
slows the entire internet (or at least whatever network you are on).
....Somehow that doesn't sound very responsible to me....

Well said Kah... I really didn't feel like enlightening these Windows noobs
at the time, but thanks..

You really *should* try actually using Linux before you form some kind of
negative opinion about it. Linux runs great on my bran new PNY 256mb GeForce
4 5900 Ultra. So, I don't know what you're talking about when you say it
doesn't work with high end video/sound cards. That makes it painfully
obvious that you've never really used Linux. Sure, I had to compile my own
network adapter drivers, but that was a matter of downloading the source
from the manufacturer's site and running two commands. It's no more
complicated than that.
