server log file bug (General Discussion)
server log file bug // General DiscussionjermeDec 17, 2002, 2:35am
[please cross-post to beta]
I have come upon a very problematic bug in the world server log files. (linux version, of course) Whenever a user presses ctrl + enter in the object description or commands field of the object properties dialogue, the command and description change are logged word for word to the log file, including any line breaks. Where normally one line in the log file would equal one event, this odd behavior allows 1, 2, 3, up to cell data limit of new lines to equal one event. These lines aren't always totally blank. Some people with weird building habits prefer to put each command on its own line. So i end up with 2-3 lines of their command or description in the log file. You can see where this would throw off any attempts to analyze or dissect the log files with a program. Some of the log file lines are good, some are broken up and need to be stuck back together, and some are blank and need to be ignored. As I'm trying to write a program to handle and look at log files, currently about 90% of the code is just used trying to weed-out the bogus lines, and doing a bad job of it. What needs to be done? Have the server remove the new line sequence from the description and command fields before writing the event to the log file. This would save a lot of headaches and give the log files a purpose (as they're pretty much unusable in the current format). It would be much appreciated.
