Re: bits and bytes (was Re: If I were president, I'd...)

Jul 22, 1999, 2:45am
[View Quote] [View Quote] Because 8 bits = 1 byte
1 kilobyte does not equal 1 kilobit
1 kilobyte = 1,024 bytes x 8 bits = 8,192 bits
1 kilobit = 1,024 bits / 8 bits = 128 bytes

I think that's right. Anyway, this is more confusing to me, especially when trying to figure out how fast modems (measured in bits per second) and other network transmission speeds are in relation to how much kilobytes per second they send. I think in kilobytes, not bits or bytes. Most file sizes are represented by kilobytes.

Last time I checked, Blaxxun, Cosmo, and Sony's Community Place, they were using RW, which can render through Direct3D. Of course it's been a year or 2 since I've tried these again...

color command and named objects

Jul 25, 1999, 6:04pm
I can't seem to get the color command to change named objects. For example, I have a button object with: "activate animate 1 wood 1 1 0" and a bunch of objects with "create name 1", but if I change the button to "activate color me brown" or some variation, it doesn't work. The color command should be able to work for named objects, just like every other command. Consistency please.

Hmm, yes, that's it, but it's inconsistent with the current name commands (like "create animate <name> texture 1 1 0") which don't require "name=<name>". Ah well. Thanks for clarifying.

And how is this committee supposed to make us listened to any more? AWCI doesn't give a shit about what we, the users/citizens, want because AWCI has its own agenda. Just go to the source of AWCI: E N Z O (Rick), Cryonics (JP), Roland, and now Hamfon.

Unfortunately, supposedly under Delaware Corporation Law (where AWCI was incorporated), companies incorporated under this law cannot be controlled by the majority of stockholders so AWCI stock is essentially worthless and only worth buying if you want to make a fast buck (assuming it ever goes up again).

[View Quote] > Well, you can always form a loosely knit corporation and all of the bitchers, whiners and complainers could contribute a couple of grand each, buy up the AW stock and take control of the corp. Who knows, Rolu... I think when AWCI (then COF) initially charged for cit=
izenships it may have helped them out a bit (and still some to a relative=
ly small degree compared to galaxy/universe servers and custom world desi=
gn--like with The 13th Floor, etc), but I think it will really hinder AW'=
s popularity instead of helping.

Everquest and Ultima Online (which charge something like around $15/month=
or so) only have around a few thousand subscribers or so, but the compan=
ies behind these on-line games have the funding to take such losses; AW, =
on the other hand, does not.

I'm just waiting for some 3D game company to get a clue and release an on=
-/off-line, multi-user, real-time, interactive, level editor that lets pe=
ople CREATE the level as they PLAY it--changing, manipulating, adding/del=
eting to it as they're immersed in it. AW allows this to some degree, but=
most current 3D game level editors allow MUCH more realism in terms of l=
ighting and special effects. Real-time interaction is the key, and AW nee=
ds to GREATLY improve on this because it is a VERY static environment, wh=
ich gets boring quick. The more like a game environment AW becomes, I thi=
nk the more popular it will be. For example, game replayability is MUCH h=
igher with a level editor than without. People are more likely to play le=
vels made by other people and groups of people long after the original ga=
me levels have been played to death. Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, Half-Life, etc=
are good 3D game examples of this effect and non-3D games like Civlizati=
on, SimCity, WarCraft, etc also prove this. Multiplayer just makes a game=
even MORE popular.

A game/program that merges both of these aspects is a definite hit. It's =
just that for some reason no company has put the 2 together. Well, I thin=
k it's LONG overdue for such a program! I keep hoping AWCI gets that clue=
=2E I've tried getting Eidos/Core (publisher/developer of Tomb Raider) to=
do it but they just don't get it. Protagonist knows what I want, but of =
course he's gone from AWCI now...so then there's GEL, which may result in=
what I want, but who knows...

Object pitching

Aug 3, 1999, 7:01am
A VERY old request that will probably never be implemented until the world database system is rewritten to accomodate true 3D rotation. In other words, don't expect it to be added anytime soon...it's obvious AWCI doesn't want to stay on top of (or even anywhere NEAR) the 3D gaming industry in terms of technology and innovation...I'm just waiting for the right level editor to be released from a multi-player 3D game where I can TRULY create immersive environments, and not these AW wanna-be mockups of 3D environments...

Object pitching

Aug 21, 1999, 8:43pm
That shouldn't matter since everytime you move, every single object (whether "pitched" or not) has to be recalculated. This is called real-time rendering, which is what RenderWare, AW's rendering engine, does.

For z-axis object rotation (what you're referring to by "pitching") to work, the cell database structure needs to be rewritten to allow for this, as currently it only stores object x-/y-axis rotation.

Why this wasn't included initially in AW I don't understand, as it's a fairly basic concept in 3D (but AW is missing a LOT of fairly "basic" 3D concepts anyway, so...). It's obvious Ron Britvich (AW's originator) didn't code AW for modularity and easy upgradability (not to mention he didn't think about AW's design well enough initially). He (before he left COF) paid for it when improving AW, and Roland (and now Hamfon) are paying for it now...

Re: Log Cabins

No, because you're not entirely correct. :) Even WITH ED, the BI will still appear. For example, if I attempt to change an object owned by a citizen who no longer has building privileges in the world, I'll get a BI message. And like you've been told a few times now, the reason the BI doesn't mention encroachment errors will usually only happen when a world has no object registry. And you can bet your newbie ass the BI will bitch to you if the cell is full.

Eep's Attacks

Apr 23, 2000, 1:25pm
Thing is, I never told/asked you to take down your site--just make it navigate more easily and to clean your converted objects up for AW. 2 simple requests. The side
effect of other people's encouragement to you and more object sites opening up, etc, is hardly the exact opposite of what I wanted.

However, by taking down my RW site when I did (if that's what you're at all referring to), I won't let people forget how crappy AWCI has managed AW in the past and
what they still continue to do to oppress people when it suits them. They do not ask before doing things that will affect other people's creations, as is evidence by JP
and/or someone else at AWCI increasing the AlphaWorld building limit radius during the so-called AWHS GZ reconstruction, then thinking my stuff at AlphaWorld 2n 8s
was/is en eyesore simply because my objects are no longer solid-colored due to AW3's lack of backwards compatibility (plus a long-standing dislike of my
"walls"--considered vandalism by some--near Gordon's Cottages which were only put up because of Queen Bee's signs which have long since been deleted; I would have
taken my walls down earlier but I didn't even know I could delete my stuff within the building limit radius until I tried yesterday! Oddly enough I can't change/add
objects.). JP also recently changed a few AlphaWorld textures which don't all look the same as the old ones. http://tnlc.com/eep/aw/history.html for more crap AWCI's
pulled that I don't agree with.

And quit moderating this newsgroup!

New Objects for Alpha - Thanks

May 9, 2000, 1:53am
Well, objects don't HAVE to be centered around their absolute axis center. So long as you know the object's dimensions the registry should be fine.

And, Myrth, if object registries didn't support axis-aligned objects (sprites), anyone could place one in AlphaWorld, but they can't because of encroachment which is handled by its object registry. Also AW would say the object isn't registered, but that doesn't happen either...
