Um, nope. You don't need to license anything to play MPG Layer-3-encoded files, genius. You really need to think more or something. Maybe your lameness is just genetic or something. The CODEC is free to download. I originally got it off some MP3 site. I believe it was orginally part of Microsoft NetShow, but the MP3 site webmaster just pulled out the CODEC and it was only 177K zipped. If you still haven't gotten a clue and figured out how to get it, I'll email it to you. Just say the word, superguy! :)

> Here's another question for ya: can the windows mp3-CODECS handle streaming mp3? Cos that's gonna be the next request... Or for that matter, ra! after all, ra is getting better in quality, and still kicks the pants off mp3 for teeny size. Do ra-CODECS exist for MCI?

Dunno; duncare. This is irrelevant to our discussion. Stop trying to save your misunderstanding.

It's only those people's "problem" who have their newsreaders set NOT to linewrap. My "options" (line length) are (is) fine when newsreaders linewrap (which should be the default anyway). The only problem I've noticed (in Netscape Messenger anyway) is that quoting, in non-HTML messages, doesn't place ">" before every line, but instead one before the first line and one on a new line after the last line.

But YOUR line length looked like shit before (seems OK in this message though).

AGP Graphics

Jan 31, 1999, 1:17am
The AGP (accelerated graphics port) video card and motherboard's AGP slot already take advantage of the AGP bus without explicit software support, I believe. AGP will increase the frame rate over a PCI-based video card, but I don't believe it's a significant increase, especially when using the RenderWare software rendering drivers.

[View Quote] [View Quote] Well of COURSE the VIDEO DRIVER has to support the hardware, silly; but no EXPLICIT support in PROGRAMS is necessary.

And you've noticed a significant difference in AW when using an AGP vs PCI video card in the same system?

avatars creation

Feb 5, 1999, 6:23pm
[View Quote] > what did you think about a basic avatar creator ? i mean , a set of heads(differents forms and skin colors), hairs (short, long, blond, red, brown, black), arms (small , larges, naked, skin color), bodys (slims, fats, brawnys), legs(long, short, nakeds, skin color), and clothes (trousers, Tshirts, shorts, suits, dresses of differents colors), and perhaps accesories like hats, glasses etc ... . the set will be provided by the world (for speed improvement and coherence of the avatars) and every citizen could combine these elements to have a "real" personality ! I think that one of the most boring thing in AW is the fact that you ever look like someone else ! This could be the solution.

COF teased that custom avatars would be coming ever since 2.0 beta, but it's been over a year and still nothing (which doesn't surprise me). Unfortunately, currently, the only way to get a custom avatar is to have some "pull" with the world owner to let you put it in their avatar list and object server. The whole process is just silly.

Objects, textures, and sounds need to be more modular and allowable from ANYWHERE ON THE NET...not just a specific world's object server. This would also reduce the duplication of standard AlphaWorld objects most worlds use anyway, but if they also have custom objects, they need a new object server, thus wasting space for all the original AlphaWorld objects and making AW's cache even larger than it already needs to be (it's bad enough textures are stored in BMP format since RenderWare can't read JPGs). Modularity is the key.

> (excuse my bad english I'm french ;-) )

That's not the only thing that's bad...but you're excused, for now.

Gravity

Feb 5, 1999, 6:17pm
By "in the mean-time" are you referring to pressing + or - while strafing?

I asked Roland about this process soon after strafing was implemented and he said gravity needs to be disabled for some reason I can't recall now. It would be better if gravity was just left enabled while strafing, however. Essentially, disabling pass-thru ([Shift]) in the world "features" does this (correct strafing happens), so it should be possible WITHOUT having to disable pass-thru for the entire world. Also, instead of gravity automatically disabling when flying, there should be a gravity on/off button/key.

Gravity

Feb 5, 1999, 9:10pm
Avatar collision detection is based on a 1m x >=1m (depending on height of avatar) x 1m cube, not a "square panel" (http://tnlc.com/rw/rwx.html#collision for more info). And your explanation doesn't "ring any bells" of what Roland said was the actual reason. Thanks for trying though.

[View Quote] > <taking a stab at this> Roland said that collision detection uses a square panel the size of the avatar for collision detection. Walking sideways, this panel wouldn't allow gravity to function correctly. Why that panel can't be rotated to face your current velocity vector, I don't know... (or maybe it's a different problem)

Perhaps you should learn how to turn on line count (and/or size) of messages so you won't be so INCONVIENENCED by "empty" messages in the future. I would rather use the subject line only if my message is very short, than quote some big-ass message and have a stupid smiley or equally mindless one-word response using HTML page colors, a digital signature, and obnoxiously long sig, wasting inordinate amounts of bandwidth, time, and effort on the part of all who may come across such an annoyingly long message.

And I've never seen "<NT>" used on ANY group and I've frequented my share of newsgroups since probably '93 or so (before that I was on FidoNET and other bulletin board message networks), so it must be a fad or something.

[View Quote] > ...well, actually I guess I will say something anyway- but the header really says it all :-)

PRESS RELEASE MISCONCEPTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (quit deleting this, you

Feb 8, 1999, 1:48am
I tire of reading blatantly wrong information in AW's press releases:

>From http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/990121/ma_activew_1.html:

"Active Worlds(TM) currently has a user base of over 300,000 users worldwide on the one Universe server (Uniserver) COFS
operates. This Active Worlds 3D universe receives over 1 million impressions per day."

According to Roland Vilette, AW's "lead" (only) programmer (after COF dumped the original programmer, Ron Britvich, who is, I
believe, still in the process of suing COF for stealing AW):

Telegram from Roland (Thu Nov 12, 1998 6:49 PM):
"oh, you asked earlier...AW has about 14,000 paid citizens now."

Note that is PAID citizens...people who have shelled out a measly $20 for one (1) year of citizenship. The "over 300,000 users" is
misleading, too, since most of those "users" aren't users at all, but tourists, and because most tourists don't ever come back!

More from Roland:

Telegram from Roland (Thu Nov 12, 1998 6:52 PM):
"usage frequency? Like how often does a given person log in? I don't know that, it isn't being tracked...I know we get about 700
new users a day, and average around 300 people in the system 24 hours a day"

and:

Telegram from Roland (Thu Nov 12, 1998 6:52 PM):
"the ratio of citizens to tourists in the system at any one time is usually around 3 to 1."

And a bit of information on Vanguard Enterprises, Inc. (the "company" who supposedly "bought" COF):

Telegram from Roland (Sat Jan 23, 1999 7:20 PM):
"I have no idea who Vanguard was...I only just found out about all this myself...my understanding is that Vanguard was just some
empty shell of a company sitting dormant on the stock market that was merged with COF for the purpose of making COF public."

To all the investors and potential investors, learn more about AW before you blow your money on a scam.

deselect selected object

Feb 12, 1999, 1:31am
Currently AW only allows clicking the selected object, the infinitely-repeating ground object, and world background; and closing or pressing enter in the Object Properties box, as ways to deselect selected object. This is fine for most cases. However, worlds with modular ground, when many objects are around that cover the infinitely-repeating ground, and when the world background can't be seen, object deselection is more inconvienent. I already mentioned this to Roland months ago, of course, but nothing was ever implemented so I therefore submit it for inclusion as an official "wish": object deselection should be possible by left-clicking on ANY object inside the 3D pane.

teleporting

Feb 12, 1999, 9:06pm
Currently, teleporting in-world via the teleport coordinate entry box requires the latitute and longitude (the world is already intuitively remembered). However, if one wants to teleport to the SAME latitude/longitude, but a different ALTITUDE, one should just be able to put #a (with # being the desired altitude, from -350 to 2000) instead of having to enter the same latitude/longitude every time.

Plus, it would be nice if the last x (10, 20, user-configurable) teleports (including world) would be remembered.
