AW 3.4 features - how many there are and how long it has taken

Nov 25, 2002, 9:08pm
I don't buy the idea that the management was "threatened." The word
"threatened" seems to imply that someone went up to Mr. Noll's throat and
held a knife to it. Now if a corporate sponsor decided that a new feature
needed to be added, then that's different. I thought AW was done with
corporate sponsors - wasn't that why the price was raised in the first
place, so that AW could concentrate on its users? :)

BOT SDK

Dec 15, 2002, 8:19pm
I still use the old VB SDK, because all of my programs use it. Because of
the changes in the way multiple instances are handled (indexed controls
verses the instance pointer), I would have to spend an inordinate amount of
time modifying my 3-year-old applications. If version 3.4 is released any
time soon, then maybe I'll have to start working on a new VB SDK using C++
that works like MrGrimm's used to in order to upgrade these applications...

Two world-feature ideas

Dec 18, 2002, 11:23am
While great ideas, both of these ideas can be implemented with the SDK :)

For example, you can ask Magine where to download the magsbot
(turtleflight.com, I believe) and set all the terrain in the world to the
texture and level you want using scripts quickly and easily.

Second, the weather with flashing lightning is indeed possible - I already
programmed a bot that can do it - simply change the attributes twice in a
row with a brighter ambient light and then a darker ambient light :)

Release #443

Jan 6, 2003, 8:55pm
This sounds like a great idea, and should have been done in the first place.
Adding all those new features to the "final beta" version was, in my
opinion, a mistake.

Enough said.

The final Movement - Roll

Mar 12, 2003, 10:09pm
Please! 3.4 isn't even anywhere near release and you're suggesting more
changes. You should know by reading ENZO's comments to be careful with what
you wish for :)

AW 4.0 Wish ( sound & video )

May 26, 2003, 11:38am
Support for streaming video would be a huge leap forward. The problem is
that most people wouldn't be able to make use of it, because streaming video
hosts are too expensive :(

BMP-to-Demeter

Jun 21, 2003, 12:19pm
But how would the greyscale image be created? Would it be converted from
another format? If so, then it might be better to create a tool to convert
from that format directly. If not, then it might be easier to simply build
the terrain in-world, right?

BMP-to-Demeter

Jun 22, 2003, 4:19pm
Well, the elevdump.txt file should be sufficient as a format - why recreate
a new format? Some research would have to be done into reading it.

But XelaG, if I recall correctly, has his own terrain copying and
manipulation tools, so why reinvent the wheel?

Contacts

Jun 25, 2003, 3:00pm
LOL - and I remember in 2001 how people complained that the contacts system
needed to be overhauled so badly. I thought it would be at least two
versions before someone asked again :)

I really like this idea. Has anyone forwarded it to ENZO?

Per world minimum browser option

Jul 16, 2003, 10:23am
Well, this is already available.

Simply program a bot to enter a world in Global mode, subscribe to the
AW_AVATAR_ADD event, and eject people whose AW_AVATAR_VERSION attributes are
below a certain level.

Wish: Some Good AW PR!

Apr 2, 2004, 1:08am
Well, while I'd like to think that this will change sometime soon, I highly
doubt it. As to the user count, I don't think there's been that many fewer
visitors - in fact, I'd say that there are many MORE visitors than there
were immediately after the pricing fiasco in January 2002.

AW's problem right now is that it doesn't have a "killer app." In 1999,
that killer app was AWBingo, which always ran out of cards, and had hundreds
of people playing in several worlds simultaneously. Then, WildAW was the
big thing, and the world quickly filled up with property (and obscene
material). Later, AWTeen had 60-70 simultaneous users.

But recently, AW has fragmented into a loosely connected collection of
individual worlds as the company places more emphasis on worldbuilding with
browser and server features, and neglects AlphaWorld and other AW-owned
worlds.

You know what's interesting though, as I'm writing this I was telegramming
Poseidon about AWRPG, which has 51 users in it right now. It will be
interesting to see if that's just a passing fad, or if perhaps something HAS
been found to rejuvenate that energy....

Comments?

Well, just make sure that you don't end up geting sued because you
misrepresented yourself as an AW employee. I've found that there's a lot of
risks in advertising like this.

Telegram All Button

Apr 21, 2004, 10:47pm
Well, if such a button existed, then, just as most people seem to have
question marks next to their names, most people would block these telegrams,
making them useless.

Get into the holiday Spirit. Bring back tourist building in Alpha World!

Dec 11, 2004, 10:26pm
No need. Just go to AWTeen instead, which has terrain and better
objects anyway. And don't tell me only teens go there - I'm almost 22
and still visit all the time.

Get into the holiday Spirit. Bring back tourist building in Alpha World!

Dec 12, 2004, 10:42pm
See, the problem with the world is simply its name. If it didn't have
that word "Teen" in it, most likely teens would congregate there, but
others would also feel safe entering.

And Daphne (may she rest in peace) was in her fifties when she helped
organize a number of events, so you certainly would by no means be the
most chronologically gifted person there :)

Get into the holiday Spirit. Bring back tourist building in Alpha World!

Dec 12, 2004, 10:44pm
I remember this discussion from August 2000. At the time, a "discussion
area" was placed at 1300n 0e, and everyone posted signs there voting on
whether seekerbots should be allowed. Seekerbots won out by one vote.

It's interesting to see how, four and a half years later, time repeats :)

Re: HTML posts (was Re: Object Yard)

Unfortunately, it seems as if a lot of people here DO have a large filter
list. I myself don't filter those who post in HTML but rather those who act
inappropriately when "chiding" the HTML posters. It's amazing how much more
pleasant the newsgroup can be when you've filtered Eep and Wing :)

Re: HRML editors (Was: Re: HTML posts)

Sep 10, 2001, 9:15pm
Dreamweaver is great, but it expires after thirty days. Frontpage XP, which
I currently use to update AWTeen's website, is easy to use and can publish
pages easily. The only problem with it is that it can mess up the tables on
some of the pages, creating problems in different browsers or different
versions of the same browser. It doesn't have the template capabilities
that Dreamweaver has, but hey, if it's free, you use what you can get :)

to people that want to use AWTeen's op

Sep 30, 2001, 1:11pm
Well, builderz, not entirely yet, but I'm going to follow Eep's advice
(gasp!) and put a 25 character password of random letters and numbers
on them this week - that should discourage theft :)

to people that want to use AWTeen's op

Oct 20, 2001, 4:31pm
Well, it's not that easy - theoretically, it could be done for small
passwords of english words, but even then you'd have to buy the cracking
program (or if you want to break even more laws, steal it). However, for
extremely long passwords like the one on AWTeen's object path, you'd have to
have a state-of-the-art computer dedicated to cracking the password for
months to have any chance of success.

About an idea on the FeatureVote site...

Sep 30, 2001, 1:13pm
I suggested that through the suggestion box to add to the voting, but
I got a 404 error with the suggestion box form, so I doubt Roland
received it - I don't know how else I would go about sending that
in....

About an idea on the FeatureVote site...

Sep 30, 2001, 1:15pm
It is interesting to note that the most voted for feature on the site
involves something completely unrelated to 3d worlds - the ability to
hide the contact list checkmark. Whereas people could have chosen
custom avatars, rotation in 3 dimensions, scaling, or anything else,
they choose a simple feature that's available in most instant
messaging programs.

Just something to point out.......

About an idea on the FeatureVote site...

Sep 30, 2001, 6:18pm
I hope so. In my opinion, the part of AW that's most behind the times is
the telegrams/contact system. Of course, a "saved state" system wouldn't be
bad either....

Who went back? Another poll

Oct 1, 2001, 4:51pm
In my opinion, 3.2 is the best AW release ever. Twice the framerate, and a
software mode for the computers I use that don't have 3d cards. I'd never
go back to 3.1.

Life imprisonment for hacking crimes

Oct 1, 2001, 9:16pm
The U.S. Congress is currently debating a law that would consider
"individuals suspected of causing minimal damage to networked
computers" as terrorists, subjecting them to penalties as harsh as
life imprisonment. This law would designate those who create even
relatively harmless viruses and trojan horses as terrorists and
subject them to these penalties.

In other words, if this law is passed, those who continue to spread
these childish fake "Stock Quote Bots" and other trojan horses could
find themselves up against stricter penalties than a simple ISP
account closure should the proper authorities be notified.

Take a look at the full article at
http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/internet/10/01/hackers.terrorists.idg/ind
ex.html.

Life imprisonment for hacking crimes

Oct 1, 2001, 10:47pm
Perhaps, and I don't agree that someone should go to prison for a minor
hacking offense, but maybe the people who steal passwords, hack into
computers, and write viruses and trojan horses and think they own AW will
start to realize that what they are doing is a serious crime.
