As I said - I'm not afraid of the terrorists - I'm afraid of what our
governments are going to do in response to the terrorists. The media is
causing people to panic, and if you watch CNN all day, you'd probably
support these sort of measures too. It's been well past time that everyone
move on - I hate to say it but a lot of people are starting to become
obsessed now.
Just my three cents.

Though this post will start a flame war, I thought I should add the other
side of the debate to this topic.
This debate has been going on for years. If you do a newsgroup search,
you'll find posts on this topic that date back to the 2.2 days and before.
Also, it seems that the same people are always continuning this debate -
just look at the three people who posted to this thread. Goober, you've
always felt this way, and so has Trekker and to some extent Xel. While
you're entitled to your opinions, let me point out that people who oppose a
particular topic will always be more vocal than those who support it, simply
because those who think that something is great don't NEED to say anything -
they like things the way they are.
I don't see why people continue to argue about these 3D homepages. If you
like them, great - sign up for one today. If not, don't sign up. Unlike
browser improvements that affect everyone, you have a simple choice, and if
you refuse, nothing bad will happen to you. Personally, I think that 3D
homepages are a great idea for those people who (gasp!) have a less complete
understanding of computers than the posters in this thread do. When
something comes out that caters to newbies, everyone flames it immediately
without realizing that the majority of AW citizens aren't programmers and
don't know much about their computers.
Second, cybersex has nothing to do with AW. AW has, from day one, tried to
stop cybersex from occurring in its universe - look at its Conduct
Guidelines. This comment is completely unfounded and has nothing to do with
Trekker's argument.
And third, I don't see AW "going downhill" anytime soon. Sure, AW's stock
is in the dumps, but so is every other company's. Everyone here complained
for AW to take the opinions of its citizens into account when releasing new
browsers, and they have - look at the new Feature Vote site. Furthermore,
the release of 3.2 allows the 25% of users who couldn't fully participate in
the universe to do so now - I don't see how you see that as bad.
Recently, the tourists I've come across are more friendly and knowledgable
than ever. The caretakers of many worlds are finally dedicated to the
improvement of their worlds, whereas it seemed as if many worlds remained
dead before. If you'd like a list, I can provide you with the names of
dozens of citizens that prove just why AW is at least holding its own, if
not improving every day.
Please justify your arguments instead of simply stating that AW is going
"downhill" because you can't take advantage of a 3D homepage.

I just tried to connect and was unable to. The network status page still
hasn't changed.
It's 5:55AM in Seattle, where I think I remember Roland saying AW's servers
are housed. The people there are probably sleeping and don't know that
anything's wrong.

I don't care if birthdays are announced - what I object to is the announcing

I definately disagree, as I did in the previous thread. Think of it
this way:
One day, you're holding an event that you've planned for months. You
spent a lot of money on a few citizenships that you're giving away,
and people show up in eager anticipation. Suddenly, the universe
welcome message is changed to "win free worlds in a special edition of
AWBingo!," and everyone leaves.
It could happen :)

I agree with no spamming in the universal message, but if they were to
advertise the new client, maybe new pricing's and so forth I would not
care. For a new AW Client for example, it can make the persons
experience a lot better...
|
Another thing is, if you purchased your own universe, you too would be
able to set a universe message, no one has looked at it this way...
And as a universe owner you would reserve the right to advertise what
you wish to customers who have purchased worlds from you...
AWCOM owns the AW Universe, they can do what they wish. Although some
will disagree with some spamming, but it is there sole choice and
right!

You could be blocked by a firewall, or there's a million things that could
go wrong.
But if I recall correctly, there was a bug introduced in the 2.2 SDK that
wasn't fixed until 3.2, which caused either AW or a bot to return error code
429 when attempting to connect regardless of the real error. Therefore,
there could probably be a number of causes for the error.
Did you try upgrading to 3.2? Use the firewall function, or, if that
doesn't work, at least you should have the correct error code.

Well, the root directory of awlife.net never contained anything more
than a page saying that the site was under construction. Ever since
Gamer added another domaint to that server (oriox.com), that page has

It's interesting how many of the most requested features have to do
with AW's security, which is sorely lacking. Right now, it's VERY
difficult to actually ban someone from a world or the universe, with
dynamic IP addresses and no way to revoke rights in a world.
Personally, I would have liked to see the world rights lists put into
a database format in 3.3. A way to eject a certain citizen is sorely
needed. PPW security, where the owner simply chooses who is allowed
to access a certain citizen's rights instead of having to use a
password, would also be a plus.

AW can't close down other universes because their website states (and has
stated):
"All Uniserver prices are a one-time fee."
Once a universe owner buys a universe, he or she has the universe for life.
A fee is only required for upgrades to the next version of the AW browser.
Thus, it would be illegal for AW to shut down universes without cause.
Besides, I find it highly unusual that AW would suddenly close all the
universes on a Sunday of all days when they are in such financial trouble
because of employees' salaries as it is.
Earlier today, the Active worlds universe shut down for about 2 minutes for
some reason - it's probably just network problems :)

Quite frankly, Mod, I don't believe you. Until I personally see this list
of passwords, I'm not taking action in any of my worlds, nor would I suggest
that anyone else waste their time either.
Second, if you actually have, as some claim, downloaded and de-encrypted
files to your hard drive that do not belong to you, then you are in
violation of international copyright law. All it would take would be for
one owner of any of these 53 worlds to file a lawsuit, and you (or your
parents, depending on your age) could be out thousands of dollars, not to
mention spending some time in jail.
I seriously doubt the legitimacy of this claim. Until I see proof, I'm not

I hope that everyone agrees with me that Beardo will be sorely missed. His
contributions to the Universe, most notably his website of backdrops and his
private projects like the 77 scenes he created for AWTeen, are unique among
the community. At this point, it's not just the lack of contributions to
the community that's hurting AW, but also the demoralization effect of
seeing so many friends leave the Universe, especially since they now can't
return as tourists to check in from time to time.
I'm seeing less and less reason to continue supporting this community that's
falling apart one by one. Why should we be improving AW when, as far as I
can see, its' creators care little about it?

This problem is easy to solve. In a new installation, simply locate the
folder where you installed the server, and delete the cell.dat and cell.idx

Update: MM tells me that there is a problem with the installer file itself.
They'll be fixing it today, so the simplest solution to this problem is
simply to wait until later today and the problem will be solved :)

The best mail server available on the Internet, in my opinion, is the
Argosoft mail server. It's completely free, extremely fast, doesn't have
any nag boxes or shareware notices, installs with a simple wizard, is
bug-free (as far as I can tell) and doesn't have any useless features that
slow the thing down.
Try going to www.argosoft.com and downloading it :)

Just to let you know, Robbie says that this is indeed a bug and it is solved
in version 3.4, which will be released in two to three weeks.
Hope this helps,

I noticed this as well. It seems pretty simple to fix - perhaps someone
could forward this E-Mail to devteam at activeworlds.com so they can fix the
problem?

What's the configuration of your network? Are you using Internet connection
sharing, or does your hub include a router too?
I have the same problem with windows 98 and Windows XP machines. I've spent
hours trying to solve the problem of the 98 machine printing to the XP
machine. The problem, apparently, is that Microsoft changed the security
protocol in XP, so you need to change the default username on the 98 machine
to match that on the XP machine. The problem is that I haven't had the time
to research how to do that (printing on the 98 machine isn't high on my list
of things to do), but I'm sure there's a way. Maybe someone has some
pointers?
