Magsbot classes in exchange for script help?

Sep 29, 2001, 6:14pm
Unlike those who are flaming you for posting in HTML, I would be
interested in taking one of these classes - how detailed would they
be?

Monday nights would be best for me - I don't have to go in until 9:30 on
Tuesdays, so if you're asking my opinion, that's when I'd say :)

I should add that Saturday mornings (10am to 12am VRT) would also be a good
time, as I'd be able to find some time when I won't be disturbed.

Ultimate Paintball Bot problems

Nov 5, 2001, 7:36pm
Hi,

While I'd love to help, I don't really have the time. Since I regularly
publish a magazine and took the position as AWTeen's caretaker a year ago,
maintaining the programs I've written would currently impose too many
restrictions. I feel that my time dedicated to AW could be better spent on
one major project (the world) instead of split between many smaller projects
(the Gulakon RPG and the software), which is why I abandoned those projects
a few months ago.

In April, I posted a message on the site where the bot can be downloaded at
http://www.shoemakervillage.org/programs.html. It's the big blue and red
text in the middle of the page. While I could simply disable all the
programs, I feel that it would be better to release them without support
than not to release them at all. The page itself says that you use the
programs at your own risk.

Hope this helps,

-Brant

Talk to Xena. I'm not sure whether she was actually selling licenses or
whether the bot was just available for Andor, however.

Log Bot v1.0

Dec 16, 2001, 4:05pm
Hey Gamer,

This bot doesn't append logs - you opened the file for "output" instead of
for "append." When you open a file for output, it deletes all the
information previously in the log. Unfortunately, when you run this bot, it
would delete all the previous logs each time you log in.

Still, you could eliminate all that code by simply using the "append" mode -
problem solved :)

Activeworlds Utility 1.10 with dynamic IP ejection

Jan 3, 2002, 3:56pm
I'd like to announce the release of the brand new Activeworlds Utility 1.10,
an update to the previously released Activeworlds Utility 1.03. New users
can download the entire program at
http://www.shoemakervillage.org/programs.html, while existing users can
simply run their existing versions and upgrade. If your upgrade utility
stops functioning for 10 minutes or more, then simply download the full
updated version.

Most of this update is related to stability. Disconnection handling is now
enabled so that the bots will automatically reconnect unless the
disconnection is the result of a privilege password change. There are some
speed increases and GUI improvements. Users of a Locator Bot can now
"visit" other avatars using 3.2's teleportation capabilities. Finally, and
most importantly, this version offers something that was never before
available: ejection by citizen number, regardless of IP address. Citizens
with eject in worlds can now set up a continuous patrol that will keep
problematic citizens out of your world until you allow them to reenter.

However, I also spent 10-15 hours programming several new features that deal
with tourist property, all of which are now obsolete and I had to spend more
time removing from the program before I released it. This time could have
been much better spent on a variety of other activities instead of
programming software that is now useless. In light of these recent events,
I've decided to take a "watch and wait" stance, meaning that I've suspended
all development of all of my software until the current situation
stabilizes. Obviously, AW is in a grave situation right now to raise prices
so high, and whether people will still be around to use bots or whether
these bots will even be useful at all if AW folds in a year remains to be
seen. This doesn't mean that I'm going to stop all my activities FOREVER
and leave AW immediately like a lot of the overreacting citizens are
preaching now; it just means that I want to be sure that my programs will be
useful in the future before improving them further. I'm still going to help
out with the other organizations in which I'm involved, so I'm not
disappearing any time soon.

I've also written some new help files at
http://www.shoemakervillage.org/help that are long overdue and should help
with most if not all of the questions I'm receiving regarding the program.
Comments about the Utility are welcome.

WARNING: IMPORTANT

Mar 31, 2002, 4:01pm
Quite frankly, Mod, I don't believe you. Until I personally see this list
of passwords, I'm not taking action in any of my worlds, nor would I suggest
that anyone else waste their time either.

Second, if you actually have, as some claim, downloaded and de-encrypted
files to your hard drive that do not belong to you, then you are in
violation of international copyright law. All it would take would be for
one owner of any of these 53 worlds to file a lawsuit, and you (or your
parents, depending on your age) could be out thousands of dollars, not to
mention spending some time in jail.

I seriously doubt the legitimacy of this claim. Until I see proof, I'm not
going to panic.

Why can't you reveal who's on the list? That, coupled with the capital
letters all over your message and subject lines, spells "HOAX" to me.

Brant's paintball bot is full of errors

May 4, 2002, 6:29pm
You obviously downloaded the beta version of the bot. As you can see at
shoemakervillage.org/programs.html and in the message that appears in the
upgrade notification, the latest version 3.0 is a beta version and may
contain errors - thus, in other words, download at your own risk if you like
to search out bugs. If you're dissatisfied with the current version, you
can retrograde to version 2.24, which is still available - just press "skip"
to reject the upgrade.

Next time, please read the webpages clearly or E-mail me with your question
before making a hasty decision to post messages like these.

Brant's paintball bot is full of errors

May 4, 2002, 10:54pm
There is no code anywhere in the paintball bot that deletes score files, so
I don't know how your files would have disappeared. I also don't know how
the program would have upgraded unless you specifically pressed the
"upgrade" button - that same code is used in every program I've published
and nobody has complained of anything of the sort in some 50,000 program
runs in over two years, and I did investigate a lot of complaints about the
upgrade process.

But anyway, the more important question is don't you have any backups? The
first rule of computers is that you make backups of EVERYTHING - I myself
have three copies of my magazines, novel, and source code even though they
take up five CD's.

May 6, 2002, 11:02am
I welcome all comments and suggestions for improvement :)

But isn't there already a function to do that? When you start version 2.24
now, it should display a message saying that there is an upgrade available.
The bottom part of the form displays what's new in the upgrade, or in other
words simply downloads and displays

http://www.shoemakervillage.org/pbwhatsnew.txt

when an upgrade is available. As you can see in that file, it says that the
upgrade is a beta version. Since the upgrade isn't mandatory, you should be
able to simply press "skip" and continue using the program as normal if you
so choose. Isn't the "skip" button what you were referring to, in a way?

Idea for Bots.

I second that. Simply hook it up to an existing monitor and install VNC on
it (search download.com if you don't know what this program does). Then
disconnect the monitor and return it to its original location, hook up both
computers to the Internet connection through a local network, and
everything's set - all of this can probably be done for about $75 plus
another $25 shipping using eBay.

The end of an era

May 31, 2002, 12:22am
According to a chat log that I received two weeks ago, two things of
importance are supposed to occur today. While the release of 3.3 is
probably no longer on schedule, I doubt that the other event has changed.
For those of you who are unaware, Roland Vilett, AW's lead programmer, will
be reporting for his last day of work at Activeworlds this morning.

For those of you who don't realize the impact of this event on the
community, Roland has contributed too much to Activeworlds to recount. If
anyone had a technical problem, Roland was THE source on AW - period.
Having been around at least since the COF takeover of AW if not before (in
other words, a LONG time), Roland single-handedly programmed almost all of
the current browser, world, and universe software that we all use every day.

Putting aside some minor disagreements some might have, Roland has been
actively involved in the community since day one - holding TechTalks,
visiting worlds, and talking to people using his software. At times, he was
even moreso a representative of the company than his superiors. During the
days when corporate partners set the development order, Roland was at the
forefront, continually arguing to include more features aimed to improve
normal citizens' experiences.

I'm sure that everyone remembers an instance where Roland helped him or her
solve a problem. For myself, I still remember Roland's nonstop commitment
last Fall when AWTeen was continually being attacked by hackers and password
stealers. He must have been asked to resolve these problems at least a
half dozen times if not more, but he didn't complain once. Even when it was
past 10:00pm and he had to be off the clock, he was still working late into
the night restoring property, looking up world logs, and taking care of
vandals.

I titled this post "the end of an era" because Roland's leaving really is
just that, and cross-posted it to all these newsgroups because if there's
one topic that's of interest to all AW citizens, this is it. I hope that
I'm not alone in saying that Roland has left MrGrimm some very large shoes
to fill.

If you're reading this, Roland, I wish you luck in your future endeavors :)

The end of an era

May 31, 2002, 1:13am
Better yet, look at my idea - we shouldn't make him throw the party :)

The end of an era

May 31, 2002, 11:34am
Well, that chat log said that 3.3 is to be released within a few hours (i.e.
before the ceremony). I doubt that AW would release it after business
hours, and besides, release dates for any kind of software, no matter what
company, are always inevitably delayed, so don't be surprised if the log is
no longer accurate :)

Worldserver(?) bug with global mode + invisible bots

Jun 8, 2002, 2:48pm
This is a bug in build 39 of the world server - I experienced a similar bug
with bots running in AWTeen that distributed passwords in Global mode and 9
9 9 told me it would be fixed when he got around to upgrading AW's servers
to build 41. Try upgrading to build 41; that should solve the problem.

It looks like you installed the wrong version of the OCX. Version 3 beta of
the paintball bot uses version 4, while version 2.24 uses version 3. Try
installing the fourth version of the OCX into the system folder and see what
happens :)

Terrain Elevation Setting bot 1.01

Jun 10, 2002, 12:11am
Man, had you released this bot a few hours earlier, you would have saved me
days. I easily spent six hours over the problem of trying to get all the
terrain in AWTeen lowered to -0.10 meters through crashing Magzbots,
Xelagots that couldn't edit terrain, and finally a VB program that didn't
quite work. The program I finally used ran for days before the process was
finished.

Just a few hours too late - hopefully this will save someone else some time
:(

Free source code

Oct 14, 2002, 1:57pm
A few weeks ago, I popped in to read what was going on here for the first
time in a long while and remember Strike Rapier or someone else making a
post about errors in the bot classes that I published a long time ago. I
realized that I have many more classes that are doing no good sitting on my
hard drive. Then, I didn't have time but now that I'm sitting at home sick,
I thought I'd put them out here and see if anyone could use them.

The AWAvatars classes located at shoemakervillage.org/programs.html are only
two of the eight components that work together in the attached program
(shoemakervillage.org/botclasses.zip). Basically, they allow you to make a
bot with a few lines of code. To show how they can be used, I included the
slideshow.vbp project that was used for AWTeen's Inauguration Day.

Capabilities of these classes include:

-session tracking (like the avatars classes already do)
-automatic querying at a set of coordinates or test string along with
keeping a collection of every object queried
-searching through collections of objects by number, name, etc.
-logging in and logging out bots, and maintaining them by automatically
calling functions such as aw_wait and forwarding callbacks to a module
-move, delete, and add objects with one line of code
-automatically LiveUpdate a zone after a query without any additional code

There's more, but I've got to get going. I had planned to post a formal
webpage for this, but Penn State stopped offering free microsoft software,
and thus Frontpage doesn't work anymore and I don't feel well enough to look
over raw HTML code for hours. To use the classes in your own project,
simply unzip the files and add all the files in the "classes" directory to
your project.

One warning though: the module that receives the events and callbacks is
inconsistent and incomplete. It receives the wrong arguments in some cases,
and doesn't have all the events and callbacks implemented. Some of the
functions that aren't used very often also aren't "wrapped" by my classes,
and I was sloppy enough to simply call them directly by making the SDK
object public.

Maybe someone would be interested in converting these classes to the new SDK
format and fixing up my sloppiness? Comments are welcome.

MAFIA RPG - Jobs open

Nov 5, 2002, 7:47pm
Sheesh! I had a lot of respect for you Carl, until you make posts like
these. Who do you think you are to determine whether an RPG is "lame" or
not? equin0x hasn't spammed the newsgroups with post after post about his
RPG - as far as I can tell, this is the first time he's posted about it.

Three days ago, you made the following post to the bots newsgroup:

"I am looking for someone to help update an xelagot weatherbot script. This
update has many needed features I need. I'll talk to you further if you
decide to help."

I'm sure that some people would say the same about your "lame" weatherbot
script.

Next time, try thinking a little bit before you start harassing people who
have legitimate questions.

ChatRelayBot 1.03

Nov 24, 2002, 11:11pm
I downloaded this bot and attempted to test it. A great work overall. I
had hoped to use it myself so that people could communicate across some of
the worlds I'm involved in, but:

1. The program doesn't include AW.DLL in the zip file. While I downloaded
it myself easily, the omission could cause new users to become confused
about how to obtain the file.

2. The help file doesn't give an overview about how the chat relay works,
and I might have to give up because I can't figure it out :( I sent a bot
to 50n 50e in Gulakon and stood at GZ and talked, but the bot didn't "hear"
me even though the relay system was supposedly online, and it didn't work
the other way either. I then moved the bot close to me and (obviously) it
could hear me, but the relay system didn't function - though I assume the
relay bot has some sort of checking to make sure that users aren't within
the normal chat range. Are you supposed to whisper to the relay bot
somehow? If so, is it even materialized in the world?

Help!
