The chat log file can commonly capture memory dumps during a fault After being used for some time the harddisk is not filled with zeros but with previously deleted content. If a program crashes with open files those files will not have a proper file ending and will often show bits from what is left in the last cluster. This has nothing to do with what the program was doing when it crashed. Jonas aka dZap Poll Time!Sep 25, 2001, 12:43pm

What are the penalties for violating the Rule? Website operators who violate the Rule could be liable for civil penalties of up to $11,000 per violation. The level of penalties assessed may turn on a number of factors including egregiousness of the violation, e.g., the number of children involved, the amount and type of personal information collected, how the information was used, whether it was shared with third parties and the size of the company. .... 20. The Internet is truly a global medium. Do websites set up and run abroad have to comply with the Rule? Yes. Foreign-run websites must comply with COPPA if they are directed to children in the U.S. or knowingly collect information from children in the U.S. For example, foreign-run kid-oriented websites would be subject to COPPA if they advertised in offline media in the U.S. or on popular U.S. websites. The Rule's definition of an "operator" - who is subject to the Act - includes foreign websites that are involved in commerce in the United States or its territories." It would be really interesting to hear how this could be enforced. The act also protects only children that are citizens of the US so drop the "worldwide" please. dZap 3.2 and PeepsSep 27, 2001, 4:14am

Looks like the links from 3dfx.com points to a dead ftp-server.

If they choose to remove the 2.2 download that is fine but intentionally trick you into believing your are downloading 2.2 when you are not is bad judgement. It's perhaps pushing the argument a bit far but what if they think that if you are stupid enough to wanting to download an older version you get a trojan or a virus instead. news:3D6BD968.50008 at utn.cjb.net... -snip- > Still, I've begun to learn that even the newsgroups aren't as widespread > as most people think. Back when I first announced AWNews' domain name I think usenet is the most under used and under valued function of the net. When people get online it's more or less coincidence if they also find usenet and learn how to use it. If I look at the numbers of different people posting in the Swedish se hierarchy they are in no way representative of the total population with Internet access. I believe it's the same with AW. Also, it has allways struck me as odd to have such a different technique as newsgroups complementing a 3D live chat. A public forum should be built in to the AW browser so that more users find it and use it. dZap opinions and flaming and stuffSep 22, 2002, 7:18am

I believe these newsgroups have never reached critical mass of posters.
As long as a small angry crowd is large enough to set the agenda this is what you will see. A parallell is the swedish "se.".hierarchy on usenet. There are groups which really works and are interesting to follow but there are others that are hijacked by the angry crowd due to too few polite people and no normal discussion can survive in them. Sadly, usenet is one of the most underused and perhaps misunderstood parts of the net. Jonas Customs Aide BotNov 20, 2002, 1:57am

I don't want to be negative but since I'm not eligible, only north americans are, I feel I have the right to :-) This promotion has all the signs of a massive e-mail harvesting scam. "SELECTION OF WINNERS. Up to Twenty Thousand winners will be electronically selected at random". There is nothing that says they can't decide to just give away 20 units instead. "LIST OF WINNERS. You may receive a list of winners by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Logitech..." means that we will never know. What's up with these strange rules? "Canadian winners are required under Canadian law to correctly answer a time-limited mathematical question in order to receive the prize." and "To comply with the laws of Florida and New York, no more than 62 prizes will be awarded to residents of Florida and no more than 62 prizes will be awarded to residents of New York.". And remember that "Logitech may use the winner's name, address, voice, likeness and prize information for promotional purposes without further payment or consideration." Alpha's vastness makes this a risk and that's why bot building is forbidden and nothing will ever be added to the world. CreshJul 19, 2004, 7:05pm

I haven't been in AW for a while, planing on attending Old Timer's Day
later today, so maybe this issue has been discussed before. Today was the first time a had a chance of seeing the new media function in action. The new feature is certainly nice but I'm a bit disapointed that the developers have chosen not to follow the the normal way AW uses it's cache. So far you knew that all media files, graphics and sound, ended up in the cache and you could govern the way AW handels the cache with options for maximum cache size and maximum size of media files. Now this is broken and content is instead placed in Temporary Internet Files without restriction. This also means that emptying the cache doesn't remove all media, you have to use Internet Explorer to remove everything. I tested this btw and after deleting the AW cache video was played from the allready dowloaded file in Temporary Internet Files. I fail to see the logical difference between the types of media and very much dislike this new behaviour. This doesn't mean that the Ice_Man video at AW gz doesn't rock. It does! :-) Jonas aka dZap Media in cacheAug 28, 2004, 8:47am

The Ice_Man.wmv from AW gz was not and the 23MB file ended up in my Internet cache. Internet Explorer do save the files in their original format and I was able to search for the file and later copied it to another location. The file is a 80 minutes download for modem users...
