Happy New Year! TaLLan hates me! :)

Jan 3, 2005, 8:44pm
You prolly wouldn't be saying that if you heard our side of the story.
Wanna hear: http://www.swcity.net/yabbse/index.php?topic=3021.0
Beware it's 190 posts right now, lotta reading. The forums exploded with
activity last night due to his outrageous behavior on his GK duty last
night.

Happy New Year! TaLLan hates me! :)

Jan 3, 2005, 8:56pm
To summarize that whole post, Tallan has a grudge against SW City (which he
refuses to tell us why). He's taken his grudge into his GK duty and had
ejected anybody affiliated with SW City or those who use the forums - no
breaking any rules required. He was pretty much ejected people on site,
some never even spoke a word. I think that includes 12 people up to this
point.
He's not the only one, as this morning some other GKs, I assume his friends,
did the same thing. The GK organize is corrupt =\
We're doing everything we can to get some justice regarding this abuse
though, and a whole heap of abuse reports have been filed already by many
people.

I think the reason they can't hype AW 4.0 is because they haven't finalized
what it will have yet. In other words, they've barely even started it, but
they wouldn't want to tell the public that for obvious reasons.

My thoughts on how AW has improved though? Well...it hasn't. On the
browser developement side, if your a world owner - great. AWI likes you.
If your a common builder, well, sux2bu. Browser upgrades haven't really
kept them in mind. AW seems to be focusing on new elements for their
browser without attempting to make previous updates available for everyone,
like terrain for example.

On the community side, bad for everybody, it's too damn small for AW's size.
Price is the obvious culprit but besides that there's no advertising and
worse is AW ignores free advertising services that I know have been
suggested to them through email.

And despite that I pay 350% more like everybody else, public worlds are
still largely neglected when it comes to content. In fact I tried to help
out recently. On November 6th I offered to donate some textures I made to
be uploaded into AW OP. Since then I have sent them 8 emails and have yet
to get an answer about my donation. Great service -_-

I think the paycheck reflects the amount of change the browser has seen the
past version or two...integrated video and some GUI changes...eehhh I dunno,
not overly impressive :P
AWI's lack of talk about AW 4.0 leads to me to believe the project has
barely even started, too.

Couldn't have said it better myself...well actually I could write a college
essay about how it should be revamped, but you got it down.

It's already backed up to a world called AWGZ.

Could Lighting in AW be brought back?

Jan 6, 2005, 6:28pm
They just fixed it a few minutes ago. But they did it wrong >_<
The maximum light radius was 10m, and, now it's 3m.

Could Lighting in AW be brought back?

Jan 7, 2005, 5:27pm
I agree with Seiya - it harms countless already made buildings that were
depednant on the 10m radius. I never really heard of any abuse stories
involving light, but if people really wanted to do it I'm sure they could
find a way O_o.

I never really thought 10m radius was huge. More often than not it's
annoyingly small if you ask me, and I end up using 2 or 3 lights just to
make up for it. Now I'll have to use even more lights with a 3m radius,
which doesn't work since there's an 8 light rendering limit X_X

I tried it out...will be reformatting in a day or two so I have nothing to
lose.
Anyway I was pleasantly surprised. Pretty nice. Caught 1 item that
Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D missed, as well as 5 other non-critical items.

Alphaworld from space

Was having some fun in paintshop pro today and maybe this'll interest the
Alphaworld people :D
http://pics.swcity.net/special_effects14.jpg

Still praticing getting the lighting right. Pretty tricky getting night
mode and sunlight to blend together. Anybody else have some photoshoppin'
skills? Make some special map effects like this and post em' here, cause
they make for great wall pictures in-world ^_^

Missing Person Quest + games to come

Jan 26, 2005, 8:26pm
For the past couple months, SW City has been working on developing php based
games. Under this system, players can undertake quests throughout all of
AW, and have a permanent player record. Today we release our first game
under this system: Missing Person

The player starts out in East Ending, an urban area, and finds Missing
Person posters dotted around. After that it's a matter of following the
clues, investigation, and interviewing NPCs. Players may also log into a
S.U.T. (a computer kiosk station dotted around town) to view their
inventory, quest status, and other information. Through a cookie system,
any changes the quest made in the world will remain even after logging out
of AW. It's a single player game, and tourists are welcome to play too.

You can start at AW 1659s 4787e 180
or click http://www.swcity.net/tport.php?aw_1659s_4787e_180

Credits:
Selanit - made the code's foundation, taught us how to use it
Syntax - programmer and designer
SW Comit - programmer and designer

and thanks to SW City community for testing

Missing Person Quest + games to come

Jan 26, 2005, 8:35pm
Forgot to mention - there's also 3 other mini-games in East Ending that we
scripted to learn the code. Just look for clickable NPCs :D
The ambient sound effects are also larger than the default download limit in
the AW options. So if you want to hear them, I suggest a 1 MB limit.

Cy Nominations

Sad but true.
Problem 1 - too many nominations. Unresonable that the common citizen will
look at everything.
Problem 2 - no preview...no picture or description of the nomination doesn't
motivate people to visit.
Problem 3 - too many nominations :P

A direct, clickable link on the nominations list to teleport you there would
also be useful.

'nother unrelated problem is cheating potential in final voting. Just part
of my yearly tradition to point that out. Complained about it 4 years now
^,^
In-world voting booths plz.

They're about as authentic as they'll proably ever get...because AWI
supports and sponsors it. For example, good luck trying to to start a
similar organziation, getting AWI to upload your statue object to the public
worlds, and then getting z object rights to place it. Would never happen.
Dunno how you say its bias when it's totally community voted :P

.......Which reminds me! Did last year's winners' in public worlds ever get
their statue? I don't think they did O_o

Feb 1, 2005, 4:48pm
That's pretty normal compared to the rest of the world. I've downloaded
countless programs over the years and half the time have to end up getting a
patch or two afterwards.

Anyway...maybe see if changing your video setting helps? OpenGL vs DirectX
I mean.

Lighting in Alphaworld

Feb 6, 2005, 5:48pm
I log in and its all dark in AW. At first I was like "omg they screwed up
the lighting!", but then I noticed it was gradually getting brighter...a day
night cycle perhaps? If so, pretty sweet! I was walking around the city
and some other places and it's kinda interesting to see what it's like at
"night". And it gives the light command a real purpose.

Sooo if that is what your up to, AWI, keep it up. Change is always welcome
;D
Just need a dynamic backdrop now, and a fix to the 8 light limit for
Direct3D rendering so we can better light up the places.

*pictures setting up big ol' stadium lights for construction sites at night*
:P

Lighting in Alphaworld

Dang wish it was darker for a little longer. Norlisk Island (my previous
thread) looks wicked at night. Its like a volcanic ash site O_O

Lighting in Alphaworld

Feb 6, 2005, 8:00pm
Hmm sounds like the monitor to me, nothing to do with the computer itself.
I been there before with my old crappy Envision monitor =\

But on second though, a day night cycle with more backdrop changes and less
ambient light changes would be better I guess.

Reason why Alphaworld GZ never changes?

Feb 19, 2005, 5:25am
Espilae: by the way.. is anyone going to clean up and redesign AWGZ
Stacee: Doubt it AW is now part of history. NewAW is the redo
Espilae: which is never gonna happen
Jaguar Hahn: NewAW hasn't even been opened
Stacee: *raises an eyebrow*
Stacee: *winks* Ah....but that could change
DaBean e has gotta go
Espilae: and then restore it
Stacee: Sooner then you might expect
Espilae: back it up somewhere
Espilae: and then delete this eyesore
Stacee: lol Espilae, this....was the wave of the future 10 years ago

This is the cut down log. Full log is available at
http://www.swcity.net/yabbse/index.php?topic=3277.0
AWI played the history card. Being the most fustering card to play, this
naturally caused some anger and the conversation got nowhere past that.

Seriously, AWI is still going on and on about how Alphaworld is history and
should rot and die. When will they learn we DON'T WANT it to be history.
It's still out there. There's NO REASON why it needs to be swept under the
rug when it can be easily brought up-to-date with what the software offers.
There's only a small minority of people who want AWGZ perserved - 8.47 %
according to the awnews.org.

Not only that, and most importantly, AWI admited numerous times NewAW was
never intended to replace Alphaworld. So are they just completely
abandoning the idea of freestyle building in a massive world? Wow...smart
move -_-

Reason why Alphaworld GZ never changes?

Feb 23, 2005, 8:30pm
Instead of just adding more objects, set up appropriate donation "channels".
I tried to donate in November and nothing ever happened. Its not that hard
to upload some jpg textures into webspace. I could do it in under a
minute -_-
