If your really looking for something to read, look at the SR forums
(forum.swcity.net) as well. There's an AW board there. Average posts per day
for the whole forum is 59 ;D

Why you are not posting.

Feb 26, 2006, 5:18pm
Well as far as I know the SR forums are the only real active AW related
forums out there. Your right that its easy for anyone to set up personal
forums, cause there's a ton. But uhhh they only get a post once in a great
while from what I've seen heh.

Your right that it's split, but its rightfully split IMO. A lot of folks
don't wanna deal with some of the nonsense going on around the NGs; plus
forum software is superior to NG software - forums are feature rich, NGs
have almost nothing ;D

Though the original intent was to post city community-specific posts there,
but eventually it grew and grew and we had to open an AW discussion board to
help sort it all out.

pole commands help

Apr 12, 2006, 8:07pm
Might I make a sidenote suggestion - never ever use 0 delay texturing poles.
They're the source of huge lag. Actually its best to just not use them all
together. Direct texturing no matter what you do is twice as fast.

I wrote a guide on it with detailed information -
http://www.swcity.net/yabbse/index.php?topic=3496.0

pole commands help

Apr 12, 2006, 11:22pm
It's all explained in the first section there ;D
But to summerize, the third number in the "animate me . 1 1 0" is how often
the textures are applied to the objects that you named. Using 0 means to
apply as fast as the computer can go. Actually using any number less than
what your frame rate is will do that, and this causes quite a big of stress
on the computer, slowing things down. 1, or pretty much anything less than
50, is basically as bad as zero. Picking 1000, or 2000 for dense areas, is
your best bet.

If you came to the SW City 7th BDay bash there was one thing to be noted -
the launching of SW City Revisited, where we overhauled most of the town
with a fresh coat of paint and toured around revisiting all the old places.
Well part of the renovating that we did was removing all the remote
texturing that was done through use of command poles, opting to use good old
fashion direct texturing instead. It uses more cell space but its worth it.
It's 10 times less laggy, which means you can afford to have a higher vis
range which is a better experience in the long run.

Apr 13, 2006, 3:23pm
That's not the parameter I was talking about...
The last number plz. The 0 at the end. That's the refresh time.

Also you won't notice a huge difference if your working with a small
project, say, under 100 objects.

Apr 13, 2006, 11:03pm
Because what happens if its stopped, but new objects load? You might as
well just do create texture name=____ and avoid all that animate nonsense...
Hence you need it to refresh, but, not too fast.

pole commands help

Apr 15, 2006, 2:58am
Problem with that is first-time loaders/reloaders. As cell loading patterns
are seemingly random, the command poles are quite likely to load before the
objects they work with load, leaving users with a misleading first
impression.
Such a problem wouldn't be acceptable under a city/community environment
where many visitors are likely just touring by the area.

Alphaworld Enhanced 1.3 released

Apr 23, 2006, 4:56am
Formatted html announcement:
http://www.swcity.net/yabbse/index.php?topic=5119.0
=============
It's here! At long last I announce the final build of version 1.3.

New in version 1.3.061

- Added the tropical sprite pack: awe_shrub1, 1 through 12. Only place these
textures on other sprites, such as palms as shrubs.
Non-AWE users will see the sprite you put the texture on.
- Texture phone1 adjusted to help prevent texture distortion on phone
object's side.
- Texture av_shirt9 enhanced (resolution 2x, fixed overcompression
artifacts)
- Texture xluc1 enhanced (8 frames now instead of 2 for smoother glow)
- Texture tile14 enhanced (fixed overcompression artifacts)
- Texture keyb enhanced (brand new texture, 2x resolution)
- Texture tbbark02 and tbbark02a enhanced (seamless, goes with enhanced
tbtree objects)
- Tbtree00#.rwx fixes and additions:
-- 3 and 7 now added and tagged, but the leaves are tag 200 instead of 2 so
that it can also accept pictures. May proof useful with masked gif support
in AW 4.1.
-- Debugged the script on 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 so that it accepts animate me
commands.
-- Remapped the trunks on 2, 4 and 7 to remove massive distortion.
- Mask fencea7m enhanced (chain link fence mask - cleaner, more precise)
- Remapped the top of inward turning land objects (landc and landf) to unify
the texturing with landa.
- Ground object fixed so that you walk along it, vs hovering above it like
before.
- Comp1 has been enhanced and can further enhanced. Add "create texture
awe_comp2 tag=1" to a comp1 object to add realistic mesh vents to the back.
The top rim also accepts signs suitable for "branding". The matching
background sign color is "D9CCB3".
- The phone object (xaw49.rwx) now accepts pictures so you can change the
phone style. A few starter textures are available:
pics.swcity.net/phone1.jpg 1 through 5.
- Objects wins1, wins2, winb1 and winb2 have had their frames tagged. To
give them a wood frame use "texture wood3 tag=1" for example. The glass also
accepts pictures suitable for stained glasss pictures.
- Objects pict1 1 through 6, and xpict1 1 through 3 remapped. The picture
frame no longer distorts textures.
- Streetlight objects (stlamp1.rwx and stlmpt00.rwx) double sided now so it
doesn't appear invisible when looking through its glass.
- Object xaw18 (sailboat) tagged so you can texture the boat without
changing the sails. Example: "create texture wood7 tag=1".

Summary:

There's 12 new sprites available. These sprites are viewable by fellow AWE
users. Place them on nice sprites though, as non-AWE users will the
sprite's default texture instead.

We finished cleaning up the tbtrees. They accept the animate command now,
the trunks don't distort the texture, and a couple more have been tagged.

A few more tagged objects, like 3d windows, the sailboat, and the computer.
The telephones accept pictures now, so you can use your own phone graphic.

This is also the first version which has a showcase area I've prepared.
Teleport to http://www.swcity.net/tport.php?AW_1847.72S_3483.20E_0.16a_25
and you can see all the lil' demo areas I've set up.

SW City Revisited

Apr 23, 2006, 5:33pm
During the SW City 7th birthday bash earlier this month, we launched a major
project we've been working on the last year: SW City Revisited.

The goal of this project was to perform a massive city-wide renovation,
which, if you are familiar with SWC's size, is quite an undertaking. A large
problem with SW City's design was that all the newer and nicer projects were
very far from town square, whereas all the older and less attractive
buildings surrounded town square (much like AWGZ's situation). Because of
this, free roam exploration from the starting point - town square - was
often misleading. We aimed to correct this.

http://www.swcity.net/pics/revisited/renovations.jpg

The first thing we had to address was navigation. For town square itself,
all the many exits have info NPCs you can speak to whom inform you on where
this exit heads to. Or if your in a hurry, head over to the teleport circle
which directly ports you to hot spots. Or take the mass trans networks such
as the monorail or subway.

http://img197.imageshack.us/my.php?image=swcitytsp44oo.jpg a render of the
new town square.

Following that, you'll most likely navigate along SW City's state-of-the art
realistic road network (what we called the "Road Revolution"). The roads
are now realistic navigational routes - not simply a gridded property
marking system. They gently curve throughout the city - no 90 degree turns
here. And back to the more important point, they're loaded with directional
signs to help you get around.

Speaking of infrastructure there's a lot more than just roads. Once you get
to where you want to be, park your imaginary car into one of the many
parking lots, then hop on the sidewalk and tour around. The outdoors are
loaded with details such as sidewalk detailing, billboards, functional stop
lights, and more landscaping that you can shake a stick at :D

http://www.swcity.net/pics/revisited/outdoor.jpg

On the topic of landscaping, that's perhaps the most noticeable change.
More than just trees, bushes, and rocks everywhere, but there are also new
massive landscapes that break SW City up into regions. Most of the District
and Precincts have changed from a simple change-of-grass texture border to a
realistic natural border.

http://www.swcity.net/pics/revisited/environments.jpg

On another note, SW City Interactive was also launched the same day. While
you roam about, you can interact with NPCs and maybe even do a few quests,
and collect an inventory. The possibilities are endless!

In any case, if you missed the birthday bash tours, we encourage you to head
on into town square and begin a free roam tour of your own. Happy travels!

For more information, go to the Revisited center at AW 2200S 3614E 66
Or if you've heard enough, head directly to town square at AW 2217.4s 3609.8e

May 4, 2006, 8:25am
1. Friend told me about it. Took him days to convince me to try it out :P

2. I wanted to become a long term builder and develop a community and city
with friends.

3. 7 years (SW City bday is also my cit's bday ;D)

4. Creative building and always finding more ways to do something innovative
and new, even after 7 years; and getting to share all of it with friends.

5. Founded SW City and likely either created or had a role in its
sub-organizations within. Built 5 million objects with of stuff. Just a
lot of building in general.

6. Building with friends. More specifically keeping building interesting by
trying a theme I've never done before.

Bump teleports are bugged at the moment. You bump it more than 1 time,

The temporary work around is to add a bump solid no on the teleport.

Podcasting Community Into 3D Chatting - But IS NOT Doing It On ActiveWorlds...

May 12, 2006, 9:27pm
I haven't personally used SL but I've heard enough about it to make this
verdict - the concepts of the programs are too different to even compare
them side by side.

With SL you got design and scripting of things. Things like vehicles and
equipment. And then ultimately the concept is money - selling them, or
selling real estate. I haven't heard of any town communities there like you
have around AW. Would be ridiculous due to how hard and expensive it is to
get permanent land all in one area. I heard there's basically no
infrastructure either. Everything is just scattered about and floating.

Because of those hard limitations, SL offers nothing to a builder like me.
