Hi
I was just thinking how I was curious to know some aspects about people in AW. 1. How did you find out about AW? 2. Why did you join? What triggered your registering as a citizen? 3. How long have you remained a citizen? 4. What is the best feature of AW for you? 5. What have you created in AW? 6. What activities do you enjoy in AW? Just had some curiousity about these aspects :) Anyone care to respond? CoLor goober kingMay 3, 2006, 11:14pm
1. It's been so long, I can hardly remember, but I believe I found it
via a billboard in WorldsChat and have been here ever since. :) 2. I first had lots of fun just wandering around and seeing all the different buildings. After a couple months, I got the urge to build and decided to stick around for a while. 3. I'll be 10 AW yrs old in September! ^_^ 4. It's versatility. It can be so many things to so many different kinds of people, and I think that's key to its longevity. 5. To wit: A castle in the sky, a mansion, a town, an organization, and a radio show or two. Next up: A reunion, and a mountain! :D 6. My shows, and seeing an active, vibrant community again. 1) I was interested in virtual art and came across AW during a search.
2) My first time in AW was less than pleasant. I was ignored, insulted, or ejected from a few worlds simply for being a tourist. Talking with a few world owners who were enthusiastic about AW was the deciding factor. (Thank you Garnet and Posh!) 3) I've been a cit since November of 1999. 4) I like world ownership and all build features for the total creative freedom. 5) 7 worlds and a new career 6) Visiting friends from around the world and world building. cienaMay 4, 2006, 1:06am
1. I found it searching for 3D chat.
2. I hung out in america GZ and liked everyone there. I also wanted to learn to build. Sir Gabe taught me to build and Rypp taught me to put roofs on houses. 3. I been here since December 1997. and joined in February 1998. Name used to be Nikona. 4. Building and owning worlds and being able to have my oen path. 5. I have built 5 of my worlds and most of the American Builder builds in america and a huge area in aw. 6. Building, building, building :) and making sprites, art drawings on the ground using pole2m03.rwx's. Can be seen at America 0.52N 46.63W 0.33a 270 and a picture of them here http://ciena.us/awpics/ground_art_by_ciena.jpg [View Quote] sweMay 4, 2006, 2:46am
hmm, bored, well, in my case:
1. A czech friend of mine read about it in a newspaper, then one day, we were bored sitting in my dad's office online, and decided to download it and try it out. 2.at first, i didn't stay long, because well, i hated being a tourist and my dad didn't let me use his creditcard, but what triggered me to finally register is when my dad agreed to let me use his creditcard. i can't stand being a tourist and such, so what actualy persued me to become a citizen was my lack of desire for being a tourist. 3. Well, my first cit was around grade 7 or 8, so around 1998-2000, not sure exactly. then ever year i would get a new cit instead of renewing, until about 3 years ago. 4.best feature, being able to own and create worlds. otherwise i'd have no reason to stay, as was the case in There and SecondLife. 5. I occasionally start working on worlds, but never really get very far, always start new themes, then quit after the second day of working on it. But ya, guess a couple of models in Tikiland is the only thing i created. 6.Enjoy either modeling things for AW, then putting them into my world, or occasionally just chatting. As for building, not my thing. -SWE [View Quote] byteMay 4, 2006, 3:35am
1) I found out about AW on a TV show back in 1996
2) I joined because it looked really cool. 3) I've been a citizen since Jan of 1997, 9 yrs now. 4) The simplistic building interface 5) Lots of stuff, including bots, and third party applications. 6) Chatting with my friends and building stuff. [View Quote] strike rapierMay 4, 2006, 3:54am
> 1. How did you find out about AW?
The usual, Googled for Virtual Reality, worlds.com was a bit crap. > 2. Why did you join? What triggered your registering as a citizen? Birthday present 4 me ^-^; a very nice cit lent me a cit for a weekend to try it out first. > 3. How long have you remained a citizen? 5 years. > 4. What is the best feature of AW for you? SDK - The features suck, I prefer to create my own :P > 5. What have you created in AW? A myriad of newbie builds, a few dozen bots, lots and lots of virtual offices for myself and others. > 6. What activities do you enjoy in AW? Kicking ass, annoying Rick and JP about things they have seemingly forgot etc. -- - Mark Randall http://www.temporal-solutions.co.uk "We're Systems and Networks..." "It's our job to know..." sw comitMay 4, 2006, 8:25am
1. Friend told me about it. Took him days to convince me to try it out :P
2. I wanted to become a long term builder and develop a community and city with friends. 3. 7 years (SW City bday is also my cit's bday ;D) 4. Creative building and always finding more ways to do something innovative and new, even after 7 years; and getting to share all of it with friends. 5. Founded SW City and likely either created or had a role in its sub-organizations within. Built 5 million objects with of stuff. Just a lot of building in general. 6. Building with friends. More specifically keeping building interesting by trying a theme I've never done before. - Com | www.swcity.net [View Quote] dm mercuryMay 4, 2006, 2:12pm
1. A friend told me about it, so I tried it out.
2. At first I registered because $20 per year wasnt much to pay for the extra features, and the software looked like fun, so i figured I would atleast support it. $20 was only 2 months of a premium online game subscription after all. I miss GameStorm. Some of the most fun games I have ever played were on that service: Fierce Harmony, Silent Death Online, Mage Storm, and Godzilla Online. Too bad they are gone now =( 3. I have been a citizen since October 1999. 4. I particularly like the sdk. It allows you to make aw more than just another chat software. 5. I created the bots that run ad&drpg. I have made a few builds in there. Most of the building credit these days should go to the talented and loyal staff. Although back when I first had the world I built almost everything. Unfortunately there are no historical builds there, only lore from previous ages. 6. Mostly I just hang out in ad&drpg, and maintain the world and bot. Its great being omnipitent in a game environment. DM [View Quote] sweetsMay 4, 2006, 8:26pm
1. My brother was a geek always dragging me to his boring computer to see
some boring web page whenever I visited. Fed up, one day, I told him was boring shit and why could he not find something cool like three dimensions like on tv....challenged he surfed for three dimensional and found AW. Next visit I saw it, and fell in love, while he gloated over his not so boring computer. There were no cits or tourists then but not sure what year that actually was...I seem to remember doing cartwheels in brazil heh... 2, took years before I allowed a computer in my house but each visit to my brother's I asked to see that active world. Fear of technology LOL. When I got my first computer, first program in was AW ...for about a year was all I had LOL....(my brother groaned and called it a 2,000$ AW Machine, which it still is as I still hate surfing LOL) I became excellent at destroying tourist properties, or garbage, and was content as tourist for years. I became a cit because a friend opened a world for a gang of us to build. I went off alone tried to build at yellow, adored it, got my cit that day so I could build at tonycat world.... 3. I have been a cit since june 2000 and have 1,181 days logged on my main cit. 4. best feature has to be the building. 5. I have created worlds, objects, dreams and nightmares LOL (oh yeah....and huge lag) 6. Building is the top activity, meeting people and finding good friends is next. I have been lucky to be able to travel a few times to meet many of the people here one on one. Once I travelled 48,000 km, all of canada and 48 usa states and met 20 people that time at their homes. It took 4 months of driving and living in a van with a dog and cat, but I will never forget the experiences and people I have met in activeworlds. It opened the world to me that I really did not know existed more than picturebooks LOL..... Thank you "that active world" sweets talisanMay 4, 2006, 11:12pm

That's really cool Ciena! Nice! talisanMay 5, 2006, 2:17am
> TY it got addictive. I did 10 of them :)
Well shoot, I only count 5 in that screen shot, I need to see the other 5... or more if I counted wrong. :) *pokes you* lady nighthawkMay 5, 2006, 11:47am
1) I was in a 2D chat called Palace (and yes, Palace DOES still exist LOL)
when *a gal* came to visit, told me of 3D *virtual worlds* and all about aw .... I wasn't overly interested at first, but after a day or two of her telling me about it I gave it a try. 2) She lent me a spare cit she had, for a whole week! I had been a visitor for 2 weeks already but really wasn't interested in what my limited sightings were showing me as I didn't really connect how I could do all I could do as a tourist ... only with her cit could I really see the potential for me personally. I thank her for that :o} 3) I was a tourist one week, a cit one week ... after my experience as a cit for one week I was thoroughly hooked and paid for my own at that time. I've not *expired* yet ... been a cit since May 7, 2003. 4) For me, it's the avatars first and foremost ... they represent me on the screen ... and if I don't look good well whatz the point? LOL 5) I've created builds, most of what I learned in the beginning I attribute to the birthday building clan, it's a great way to learn what you can do and how creative you can be with primitive objects ... I say primitive because AW cannot really take any objects of substantial filesize or polys and most of the objects one learns to build with are already several years old. Three weeks after becoming a cit I had been playing bingo, won my own sample world (P20) and when it was about to expire two months later I was already hooked on that, I still have it ... it's now a P30 and the world is Aeon. My most recent passion is bot programming in C++. I figured if I gotta learn scripts *for bots* why not just get the programming code down and do my own LOL. I have had some past experience with programming so *I can do it* :o}Oh and I make my own avs now too. 6) Hmmm I'd have to say making avs, programming bots, building for gifts or my world and it's fun to get together with a community of people like for parties, etc. Lady NightHawk [View Quote] tart sugarMay 5, 2006, 1:21pm
> 1. How did you find out about AW?
My brother used Juno for his email, and found AW through the JunoDome. He showed me, and I thought it was the coolest thing I ever saw. > 2. Why did you join? What triggered your registering as a citizen? Well, I had always been a very gregarious person, but was now a shut-in and rarely saw my friends. I was just learning how to use a computer, but surfing the web didn't hold my interest. I saw AW as a way to connect with ppl again and learn about different cultures from all over the world. > 3. How long have you remained a citizen? I was a tourist for as long as it took AW to process my credit card. LOL I became a Cit on Feb. 24, 2001 > 4. What is the best feature of AW for you? Well, in the beginning it was being a Wallkeeper in JunoDome, but then it closed. It's open again, but it just isn't the same anymore. Now it's being a part of the GK org. and helping newbies learn the program and directing them to interesting sites in AW. Hopefully they'll be as excited about AW as I am. > 5. What have you created in AW? Dozens of various builds, but nothing really noteworthy. I build for my own pleasure. > 6. What activities do you enjoy in AW? Chatting in The Gate with ppl from halfway around the world. That still blows me away. I was excited to get a walkie-talkie set when I was 12 and talk to a friend across the street with it! rofl alphabit phalphaMay 5, 2006, 1:51pm
I found out about AW from a school teacher. He knew I liked creative stuff
and suggested AW as another medium to create with. I decided to become a citizen about 20 minutes after landing in AW. I hadn't chatted or built yet, but I saw a wonderful place to spend my spare time (lol). I have remained a citizen since August of 1997. In my opinion there is no "best" feature of AW. All of the features are wonderful! If I had to state one though, I would say the ability to be able to paint a picture without having to clean up paint brushes is the best! I have created a few things in Activeworlds. My first build I deleted because it was pretty bizarre:) From there I have made a few lounges, and homes. Cy Pastures in AW world, I created for all of us post Cy folks that are put out to pasture now:) I am on version 56 (I think) of my world A'A which is now Nrthpole. It has been many things, but as soon as new objects or builds come out I am inspired to start again! I have also created some objects and avatars and a cakewalk area with textures for folks to make cakes from along with dreamer2 and cyberwitch. I spent a little while doing tech support for the Juno Dome. My biggest creation however, is the Cy Awards:) Well....I could go on forever about them, but it would become a novel...yikes! I don't go to too many other activities other than the Cys, but of all of the activities I have enjoyed the second most are the SW City activities. Those guys really know how to create and entertain! Oh...and I really loved the NG's Survivor! In conclusion I would like to say that AW wouldn't exist nor be entertaining without all of the wonderful people who are here:) john1018May 5, 2006, 8:38pm
1) All the Juno spam about AW finally got me curious, so I took a look.
I didn't have a clue what 3D was about or that it even excised. 2) The day I landed in the Juno Dome, I watched from a corner for an hour or so. I thought it was pretty neat, so I joined. 3) I've been here since Feb 01 4) Being able to build without cleaning up a mess or putting my power tools away. 5) I've built several house on Alpha...got bored with the objects and bought a World...witch is STILL far from finished LOL 6) Chatting with friends and building. I'm trying to learn TS now too, with limited results :O) [View Quote] lady nighthawkMay 6, 2006, 12:14am
SDK Rule #1 ~ Thou shalt NOT offer yourself for an helper to the newbie
programmer LOL I just *might* take you up on it as I have at least two others so far hehehe Thanks tho, I'll keep anyone in mind who's willing to help me learn, I catch on to coding stuff easily once I understand what code goes where. I have experience with HTML and PHP, as well as python so I'm not new to doing stuff from scratch ... I am lazy however, tis why it's taken me three years to *get to it* LOL. > 2. Why did you join? What triggered your registering as a citizen?
I like pretty pictures, and 3D was all new, like a dream. AW was free back then. > 3. How long have you remained a citizen? 10 years next week I think :o > 4. What is the best feature of AW for you? Community, and technically AW works nice and fast. > 5. What have you created in AW? A world and some models for it, and an AW related web site. > 6. What activities do you enjoy in AW? Chatting, gatekeeping, beta testing, information gathering, admiring sceneries, some games. Psst, you haven't told us your own answers :) -- Mauz http://mauz.info colorMay 6, 2006, 5:27pm
Hehe I was trying to be shy. Well here are my answers too.
1. How did you find out about AW? ---A friend of mine showed us the program. She got us in AW then quickly we were in, I think, her own trial world. I made that location as home entrance right away, so then I never realized that AWGate was the entrance world or that AW gz were separate places until much later. We chatted in her world & then I tried building. 2. Why did you join? What triggered your registering as a citizen? ---As soon as I learned your builds would not be deleted by others and you could join a friend by a click, and because for $20 it sure wasnt a turn down. I had to do it by mail so I waited anxiously for those two weeks. Checking the mail each day. 3. How long have you remained a citizen? ---I joined in April 1999. And Ive introduced friends from textbased chat to AW and they joined too. Although its harder now for friends to join, since some of them are on disability and cant afford the cit. 4. What is the best feature of AW for you? ---The BUILDING!!!! I LOVE IT!! For me the avatars are just something to use. But I love creating landscapes. My first builds as a tourist were very frustrating. I attempted them on my own and just couldnt get them to fit right. I tried hard then quit coming to AW very much. I just couldnt understand why my other friends(the ones from a 2D chat) were still in AW ALLLLLLLL the time. So I came back to AW & one of them showed me a few necessary tricks on how to build to make things fit. Then I got ADDICTED to building. 5. What have you created in AW? ---My first builds were a school in AW and a tiny house in a friends city. Ive done some landscaping, hills, valleys and small attempts at villages in them. Lighthouses, gardens, waterfalls, lakes, caves etc. all in AW world. What I like about building is when you look at your old builds you can see your skills progress. I've learned a lot from the Building Geniuses in AW who participate in the birthday builds & AW School teachers who helped me with my questions. I still hate making roofs. But I love decorating with flowers & trees. I'm forever grateful to tunablues for his trees!! I like building to make realistic landscapes. I was inspired by Mt.Bob when I first saw it I was amazed. 6. What activities do you enjoy in AW? ---Building. I like building with a few close friends in AW, sometimes building side by side. I love the Easter & Christmas Hunts! I wish there were more of those! Its too long of a wait between hunts :) I also love exploring AW world with friends as we find new or old unique builds. Chatting in AW/AWGate is ok, but for me I use a faster 2D-text based chat program, for when Im in that mood. I like being a Gatekeeper and helping people tho. I did bingo for a while but not into that right now. [View Quote] [View Quote] jaguar hahnMay 7, 2006, 2:07am
> 1. How did you find out about AW?
The owner of the world Librarea introduced me to it. > 2. Why did you join? What triggered your registering as a citizen? Well, I won my first cit from AWCamp sooooo :P The features were amazing, I loved AW. > 3. How long have you remained a citizen? Since 2000. > 4. What is the best feature of AW for you? Building. > 5. What have you created in AW? A baseball stadium, two towns, and many army bases. > 6. What activities do you enjoy in AW? Building, hanging out with my friends (talking), AWRadio, exploring worlds. -Jaguar scented nectarMay 8, 2006, 4:10pm

All I remember is that I found a link to it somewhere.
> 2. Why did you join? What triggered your registering as a citizen? I was in awe (no pun intended) over the fact that one could build in a shared, very huge set of worlds, and also chat live in the 3d settings. Citizenships were free when I joined so I didn't hesitate. Just reading the instructions on how to build instantly converted me. I just had to sign up. > 3. How long have you remained a citizen? It was so long ago, I've forgotten. My cit # is 161709, so I guess that dates me. > 4. What is the best feature of AW for you? The whole thing overall, but I especially like getting caught up in building. > 5. What have you created in AW? An out of date texture yard, and some unfinished stuff. I've just begun building my new home base in aw making a lot of use of the new large picture objects, and the new trees etc. Outside of AW, I've made a website where I offer a bunch of free textures and objects (4519 plants!). At some point in the future, I intend to add a large selection of 3d skybox textures that are designed with AW in mind. > 6. What activities do you enjoy in AW? Besides building, I like lurking in chat areas like the gate or aw ground zero. Sometimes chatting too. -- Scented Nectar http://www.scentednectar.com/aw/ > Just had some curiousity about these aspects :) Anyone care to respond? > > CoLor |
