First the bot testing and now they're being more blunt about it? How many fucking MORONS use AW anyway?

I find in our society this is a growing trend, not just in aw. In active
worlds it's something amazingly obvious like "don't give out your password",
on plastic model kits "do not eat the contents of this bag", and on
television warnings not to emulate the scenes shown. It's quite sad that
our society is catering and dumbing down to these idiots, instead of letting
them learn from their mistakes and becomming better people. Not only that
but people can sue and win for their own idiocy these days. Break into a
power substation with the intent to vandalise, become injured, and then
sue the company.. and win. What next? We better put warnings on every
single inch of road stating "Do not jump into traffic"... because if we
don't you know someone one day will sue a car manufacturer after being hit
by a car.

I'm all for warnings that are called for, but if we keep dumbing things
down people will rely more and more on these warnings and instructions and
we will only have to dumb things down more.

Then, on the firecracker packages (Mind you these particular ones were little ones that I've detonated in my closed fist and just
stung, not the big dawg killer ones that I take out young trees with) "Warning: Do not hold while lighting fuse." Next line said

I must say, it isn't very attractive or appealing to walk into AW and have
the IO screaming at you not to give your password away. It's something not
to be ignored, I know, but still, it doesn't give you much of a happy vibe,
more paranoish. :)

dont know what else to do but plaster that warning all over the place - its
the old story, how do you stop someone being malicious if they are really
intent on being so?

We catch people all the time, they form little groups of shared accounts -
what most of them fail to realise, is that they also all share IP
addresses - so what I do, is cross reference hacked account with every other
IP address on that, and trace them back. Usually, this way I find other
accounts that have been takent hat we wernt aware of.

Its policed alot, but its hard - I wish I could think of a better solution
than the one I have now, but its the best I can think of - its pretty hard
when people dont read and follow common sense though.

Well, instead of yelling it, just say "Welcome to Alphaworld, enjoy your
stay! :) And please don't give out your password to anyone. No AWCOM
employee will ask for it. Please report anyone that tries to imitates an
employee or citizen or uses any other method to try to get your password to
a peacekeeper or AWCOM <insert an email address or url>."

Smileys help a lot too, and should they read it, they'll be aware. :) It's
not your fault if someone loses their password, especially if they read the
IO message, so why bother, I wonder. If someone gets bitter and makes a big
scene, at least he/she will get even more people aware. :)

Maybe have a wall of shame on the website or a list of all the methods to
get a password that you have seen so others are aware. :)) Those always
help.

So be it if they're too stupid. Don't even bother to give them any regard if
they don't care to read about password safety and have an AWCOM imitator
steal their password, because i doubt you want a citizen that stupid running
around in AW. Rick and JP might want to attract the dumb masses, but I don't
think ANYONE in the universe wants AW to fall to that level. I mean, look to
see how much we hate Juno. lol.

And Lo, the stupid shall be with us always. Factor, no matter what security you
try to put in force, someone will always figure out how to get around it. If
the kiddies are idiot enough to give away their passwords, then let them figure
out how to get them back. If they can't, then the question begs to be asked:
"Do we really want to polute the AW gene pool further with having to hold their
hand and do their thinking for them?" As in all other aspects of the internet,
let the user beware. ActiveWorlds is doing a reasonable effort to control this
problem, but I sure wouldn't loose any more sleep over it if I were you.

Well, I think this is why that Universe-wide message is being implemented in
3.2. Another solution could be to put "Never give your password out to
anyone" in that empty box in the citizen attributes box. *shrugs*
Maybe put something about it in the AW help files or on
http://www.activeworlds.com/worlds/alphaworld. Lots of things. Just gotta
look.

May I suggest better password and privelage password encryption? Sure, this
will only keep them out for a little while, but you never know.. it might
work. I've heard stories from a reformed hacker friend who says it's
relatively easy to steal a privelage password. Not sure about account pws.

Encryption won't help anything. The encrypted password goes in the INI file with the username, so that's all you need.

Basicly have a warning once when they first immigrate and pick their
password. If you make them rely on warnings instead of common sense they
will only become more reliant on that. Soon you will have to have a huge 10
meg welcome msg telling them not to put their hands in blenders, not to
jump in front of traffic and so on. There is a fine line between an
important warnings and holding hands with idiocy. awcom has done more than
they should for these fools. If someone is stupid enough to give our their
password, a warning isn't going to help. Actualy the warning is scaring
some tourists, not wanting to pay for citizenship because obviously there
is some huge passworld security problem. Let them lose their citizenship
for a while, I'm sure after that they will be a little more suspicious next
time someone asks for their password. And if not.. well it's hardly awcom's
burden to raise the collective global inteligence... but please no more
welcome msg, that only serves to lower it.

Exactly! Bothers the heck out of me that some lady can put a hot cup of
coffee between her knees while exiting a drive thru, burn herself, SUE and
WIN a million bucks! Now they insist on giving me a lukewarm, half-filled
cup of coffee in a cardboard holder. Hot is hot whether its 150° or 250°.
Heh, it doesnt take a brain surgeon to figure out where hot drinks don't
belong. I agree society needs to stop catering to ppl w/brain leaks and let
them utilize their common sense, or lack of. Trojan warnings are probably
beneficial to worlds with large newbie volume, but im pretty tired of seeing
it in aw in general......especially over lukewarm coffee!

Well... if it's encrypted, the hacker friend can't very well use it can
they? Especially if that password encryption is based in part on some
dynamic variable... like the person's name or something.

actually they can.. replace thier ini with the one they stole.. aw will decrypt it.. you won't know the password, but you also won't
need it.. the only way to stop this might be having several different encryptions.. so a person can't just use it, because they're
browser can't decrypt that type.. probably could crack it though.. and might be too much work for what it's worth heh..
