world share

Oct 16, 2000, 4:23am
Hi people

Very soon I will have my own world, and I would like to find either one or
two partners to share some of the start-up costs with. The person I am
looking for has experience in object creation and editing, as well as bot
scripting. More specifically I would like to have this person take
responsibilty for avatars and tour guide, walker and sensor bots. The
world's theme will be City.

In return there will be a considerable allocation of land to play with, plus
caretaker and ftp rights. Also note that as there is a reasonable
expectation of external sponsorship, so initial costs are hoped to be
returned with profit.

Anyone interested can email me at justefyde at hotmail.com for further details.

Bots running on Unix computer

Nov 16, 2000, 9:11pm
I have my world hosted on a Unix, and had planned the same hosting provider
to run various bots, such as tourguides and other effects, 24/7.

No I'm told bots won't run on Unix computer. Is this true?

You can create a survey of your whole area with Xelagot, filter to get just
the objects with the command you want to change, then save that as a project
file. Then do an search replace/function in a text editor and save the file
with a new name. Mass delete the first project, build with the edited
version retaining cit name, time, etc. No script required.

You most likely have the original project project...

Use the orignal project and do the find/replace again, but this time be sure
you don't take out the extra comma or space at the end that caused the
problem you now are getting.

Delete all shitty snowed objects, and rebuild using the new edited project.

Test it all with one object if you like. It'll work eventually.

Great - glad to help :o)

Something I forgot to mention at the time is that Xelagot tends to get
pretty slow to work with once you get over 100,000 objects. It all
downloads fine, but running filters and such on so many objects is a strain.

Why is the survey surveying such a wide area now? I ask bot to survey 1
cell and it surveys 25 sectors just to retrieve one cell? Also... the
back-up world scripts I think still work - but the bot seems to be reporting
its progress every second?

Does this upgrade fix the worldbackup scripts that make the bot accounce
what it is doing every second?

Also, when using the Survey Manager and requesting the bot to Add a Cell,
Sector or Zone to the Project, why does the bot need to survey 40 x 40
co-ords? Its a long wait, especially when only a small area is needed.

Alex,

As already said by Goober, I really didn't mean anything by my questions
other than asking questions, and in no way were the questions a criticism of
your excellent program. I find Xelagot a very fine bot and I use it
consantly, and am very gratiful for it being free.

For question 1 you may have replied "its a new feature of the script to keep
you constantly informed". On question 2 you might have replied that AWI new
SDK enforces the size of each query. I have no clue on either because my
programming skills are not yet advanced enough to implement SDK into code.
Point being, in both cases my observations and questions do not at all
relate to bugs of Xelagot, because in both cases Xelagot continues to
perform exactly and correctly.

Also, I posed the questions in the newsgroup because I figured your answers
would be useful to everyone using your bot, not just me.

I apologise if I inadvertantly phrased my questions poorly.

To unlock the bot's attention and cancel listening mode, say:

You could also try saying "WB" instead - that will save you some typing.

1. survey the world/area
2. enter into the filter the name(s) of the object(s) that give(s) the error
3. mass delete them

do you need more detailed steps?

World stops running

Aug 8, 2003, 12:12am
I agree with that procedure - shut down briefly if overloaded... but...

Some hosted worlds do not have this problem occuring - it never happens on
AW's servers and they are managing many worlds with huge traffick loads.
(hmmm maybe it is even occuring on their servers? They do get WFS when
in Alpha World, but it usually is a wait of 20 secs or so - not 5 to 10
minutes).

The problem seems like there still needs a solution, because a local server
should be able to handle the traffick generated by a bot and reasonable
number of users (assuming they are not running on old Commador 64s).

Perhaps there is an overload switch somewhere but its set to an unreasonably
low figure?

World stops running

Aug 9, 2003, 2:20am
At the new years events and 4th July events we do have multiple bots
running... one for entry and exit monitering and the other for special
effects (fireworks and countdown). The bots are run on a different server
but they do account for some messaging and for building and editing of
objects. I can't recall if the downtime is coincedent with the effects
which occur on the hour.

Is there a way to stop a looping sound

Dec 13, 1998, 5:42am
I have instances where either BUMP or ACTIVATE is used with SOUND. Does
anyone know how to stop the SOUND without interposing a BUMP or ACTIVATE
SOUND SILENCE.WAV, or leaving the area of the sound???

(Example: Click ON button on computer and humming sound starts, then click
OFF button and sound should then stop. Also... water tap ON/OFF. Window OPEN
you hear the birds outside, close and it should stop. Problem is, what do
you do when the person wants to stand there and click On, OFF, ON, OFF, ON,
OFF forever?)

Is there a way to stop a looping sound

Dec 15, 1998, 4:20pm
Rolu - reread my first post - it says "without interposing a
silence.wav". When you interpose the silence wav there is no way to
reactivate the original wav on a continuous basis.

I repeat - I want a solution that will result in,....
Click On... sound plays on looping
Click Off... sound ceases
Click On Again... it plays again looping
Click Off Again... it ceases off
etc. etc. etc. 50 times on again, off again, etc etc

Can anyone from COF tell me if there is a correct command to do this?

Is there a way to stop a looping sound

Dec 19, 1998, 5:35am
Thanks Tyrell for the only workable solution!

The other catch is that the person must have there web browser open at
the time of when they click the activate button. It definately works
but not real practical for visiting tourists and a lot of explaination
signs around the place. The person is more likely to give up than
bother with it.

I've left the things they way I originally had them - that is made
some buttons holding the same position that disappear when clicked
with each activating alternating sound*.wav / silence.wav. Obviously
with building limits they get to do the "turn on / turn off" 2 or 3
times and then permanent silence when they run out of buttons.

If any wants they can visit my works at:

AW 500.0S 400.0W 0.1a 90

Arguably the best building work in AW :) T'gram if you know better or
equal so I can add it to my "best of the best" t'port station.

Regards, and thanks all that contributed to this sting...
