[View Quote] -- Goober King Calling you "black" http://www.gkstudios.net A little bit too far (AWGate Woes)Jan 2, 2006, 6:48pm
I've got news for you, CoLor, but Rick and JP have no say (or apparent
interest) in how the GKs are run. The GKs simply come up with their own arbitrary standards for what is and isn't acceptable, including different standards between different individual GKs! It's the same situation with the PKs. The only thing Rick and JP has control over is the CA's list of banned words, which as we all know, doesn't have any sort of context detector. As for "eroding the standards of language", I think that's a load of bulldoodie. Language, by nature, is a fluid, dynamic entity, as new words are created and old words fall out of use to better reflect the current state of society. Thus, attempting to define "standards" for such things is an exercise in futility, and merely seeks to separate the intellectual snobs from those who they deem "crude". And who gets to decide these standards anyway? Why is "crap" acceptable, but "shit" is not? Or "screwed", but not "fucked"? What about euphemisms; should they all be banned as well? It's all a slippery slope that will result in the abolishment of freedom of speech, and I'd much rather leave it up to the individual what they do and do not want to hear. This is why there's a mute function, people! :P [View Quote] -- Goober King A euphemism for "awesome" http://www.gkstudios.net A little bit too far (AWGate Woes)Jan 3, 2006, 10:58am
Here, I did some quick research into the subject. Turns out that, prior
to the year 1066, there was no such thing as "dirty words" in the English language. Then the Normans (read: French) invaded Saxony (read: England) and deemed anyone who spoke Anglo-Saxon to be crude, vulgar, and uncouth, and even outlawed some of their words. Ever since then, speaking the Anglo-Saxon version of certain words has been considered taboo. You can read more about it here: http://www.bobparsons.com/DirtywordsWhywehavethemandtheJapanesedontHintThanktheFrench.html Obviously, morality has nothing to do with it; merely a case of the winners getting to write the history books. Frankly, morality should be more concerned with what is said, not how it is said. The fact that someone is talking about sexual acts against your mother in front of children should be more troubling than the fact that they used a compound swear word. Another point to consider: Maybe the reason kids enjoy saying swear words so much is precisely because they're banned. They see adults getting all uptight over these certain words, and think it's funny to see them wig out every time they utter them, even if they don't know what they mean. Maybe if they weren't taboo, kids (and adults) would be less inclined to use them. So, as I said, trying to ban certain words is just a method of separating the intellectuals from the "commoners", and futile, as people will simply come up with other words to describe the same objects and situations. Instead, let's worry less about how something is said, and more about what is said. Because we're not the most costly-paying citizens anymore. Back in the
day, we made up the majority of their income, purchasing worlds and citizenships. But now that AWI has gone the virtual education route with a handful of private contracts, they're making more money than we could ever hope to give them. And the worst part is, they don't even have the staff necessary to juggle both parties' interests. Thus, they are lavished with attention, and we're left holding the bag. When it comes right down to it, money talks. [View Quote] -- Goober King Talking money http://www.gkstudios.net Will the last person in AW please turn out the lightsJan 13, 2006, 1:51am
The issue isn't necessarily the cost, as $6.95/month is still cheaper
than any of the MMORPGs out there these days. The issue is more about AW being *worth* that kind of price. People left not simply because they raised the prices, but because people didn't feel that AW offered enough to be worth the hassle of shelling out that kind of money. Personally, considering how little AW has evolved since the price hike, I'd say it's still only worth about the original $20/year price. But from the sounds of it, AW 4.1 should bring features that put the product more in line with its current price. Maybe once it's released, we'll see a virtual Renaissance in AW! Only time will tell... [View Quote] > Six years ago I joined AW, when membership was $20 a year. The worlds were > full of people: citizens & tourists. Good news for broadband and modem users alike! AWRadio now has *two*
radio streams: one for high bandwidth users, and one for the poor souls still stuck on 56K modems! Here's the straight dope: http://awradio.mine.nu:8200 - High BW stream (96kbps/44100kHz/Stereo) http://awradio.mine.nu:4100 - Low BW stream (24kbps/22050kHz/Mono) We may increase the bitrate on the High BW stream as time goes on, depending on our bandwidth usage, so stay tuned! Also, High BW listeners should notice a significant decrease in the delay between the server and your media player. Oh, and unlike some other radio stations out there, our Low BW stream actually works! ;) Enjoy, and thanks for tuning in! :D -- Goober King Straight dope http://www.awradio.com AWRadio Introduces Dual StreamsFeb 10, 2006, 7:42pm

They're not posting because they're too busy participating in said
community. The newsgroups aren't the community, AW is. So stop reading, and get out there and *do* something! :) The only thing the newsgroups has ever been good for are whining and pointless debating, and I think most of the people in AW just got sick of it and stopped coming. This thread will be for maintaining my running list of bugs that I find
while using 4.1. Feel free to use this thread to post your own bugs. Don't forget to post your system specs! :) - If you're in freelook mode and someone tries to join you, your mouse cursor will completely disappear within the AW window. This problem does not seem to occur with other pop-up messages such as invites and file requests. Restarting AW fixes this problem. - If you're flying forward or backward and land on the ground, you will maintain your flying speed while walking/running until your avatar stops moving. The "sliding" motion that now occurs while walking/running is also greatly exaggerated when this happens. - Panels do not remember their Auto Hide status when they are closed. This results in other panels resizing themselves whenever a former Auto Hide panel is reopened. - The Voice Chat button in the main toolbar causes the entire Tabs panel to close if the VC tab is in focus. Also, if the Tabs panel is on Auto Hide, the VC button does not unhide the Tabs panel when clicked. This button should function similar to the Web and Tabs buttons. - I'm also experiencing the memory leak problems that other uses have mentioned. After a certain amount of time, my CPU usage shoots up to 100%, even when AW is minimized. This can also happen simply by having AW in focus, though I've had that problem with every version of AW, so it could just be me. Anyone ever notice its usually the older folks that complain about
cussing? ;P The fact is, it doesn't matter who does it. AW is a PG-13 world, and if someone feels the need to run a blue streak away from Ground Zero, they should be able to. Doing some messing around with movers, and here are several bugs I have
come across. Some of these may have already been mentioned, in which case, I'm just confirming their existence. I'll reply to this post with more if I find any. - The following fields do not have any documentation: Detach on Bump Disable Auto Yaw Disable Move Looping Seq File Use Object Tag - There is no way to disable the "Add on Bump" feature. If the "Single Rider" box is checked, the "Add on Bump" checkbox becomes unchecked, but the Add on Bump feature remains active. Otherwise, the Add on Bump checkbox is automatically checked and there is no way to uncheck it. - As a related bug, if the "Single Rider" box is unchecked and "Add on Bump" is checked, you cannot uncheck the "Click to Start" box. If this is intentional, then it should be documented. Otherwise, I don't see why a multi-passenger mover can't be started when the driver bumps into it rather than clicking on it. - Changes to Waypoints are not saved unless the entire Object Properties panel is closed. This can make editing Waypoints tedious. - The Pause column in the Waypoints table can only be edited by double-clicking on it. With all other columns, the user can press Enter to go into Edit mode and move around the different fields with the Tab or arrow keys. If the user navigates to the Pause column while in Edit mode, they will leave Edit mode and have to double click the Pause field to edit it.
