I just tested this out in AlphaWorld, and confirmed it: AW now has a
GLOBAL Customs Aide monitoring all chat everywhere in the world. After
*two* offenses, you're ejected from the entire Universe for around half
an hour.
Who's brilliant idea was this, and where is he so I can wring his
scrawny little neck?!

that's horrible
Jun 4, 2006, 3:16am
Ignoring the Orwellian overtones of the new policy, it's a little unfair
of AWI to change the rules without telling us. It used to be that users
had to abide by the world rules within the 200 meter chat range around
ground zero. Outside of this range, they were free to say what they wished.
I suspect that the new Customs Aide will simply drive AlphaWorld
downward a little faster on its ongoing fall to the bottom of the
populated worlds list. I'm not being pessimistic, though. I think that
if enough of us send polite, reasonable complaints to AWI, they will
remove or modify the new CA. They did scrap those horrid weather bots
after enough users expressed their displeasure with them.

My reaction as well. I'm going to pretend this was an oversight because I
just can't believe they would enable a global chat nanny over a world as big
as Alphaworld. I rarely use any cuss words but if I want to use it in a
conversation between my friends 100 miles away from GZ then that's my own
business. Who asked for this silly regulation o_O
Actually what's 10x worse though is no web links in chat anymore. I depend
on the convience of auto-linking in day to day chatting, as do most people.

Exactly. Of course, enforce language around GZ, but that's what Customs Aide
is for. This is just completely overkill.

What. The. Hell. That is the best way to put it. It is the only way I could
start this post.
99% of the time, I have always been behind all of AWI's actions. This isn't
as major as marking up prices and all that jazz, but that is aweful.
We pay $69.95 per year, and we cannot even use bad language between
ourselves in the middle of nowhere?
AWI has defintally over-done it with the censorship.
At present, I cannot see the Custom Aide bot, so I'm guessing it has since
been cut.
I believe the world ratings were alright, no harm there. The excessive
"Beware Activeworlds may not be suitable for some..." blah blah bullcrap, we
could all live with, despite taking up valuable space for nice welcome
messages and room in AW GZ that sign objects occupied.
But this has gone way too far.

Actually you know, I didn't even think about it at first...but what about
all the non-english speaking communities in AW? Don't they sorta need the
extended ascii characters? o_O

Thats what I warned them about long ago when I realised that this isn't
supported any longer.
I believe it's use English-characters, or not at all. I never did like the
weird characters in AWGate.

Anyone ever notice its usually the older folks that complain about
cussing? ;P
The fact is, it doesn't matter who does it. AW is a PG-13 world, and if
someone feels the need to run a blue streak away from Ground Zero, they
should be able to. Even you should be able to see that this is taking
censorship way too far.

Well gee, thanks for pointing fingers. Those that would assume
something about another group of people without backing it up seem a bit
worse off to me in the maturity factor, but thats just my opinion.
This is really a bad move AWI. Everyone else has mostly hit on it, but
ascii, web-linking, and yes, even swearing, are parts of chat we use
regularly in our conversations. I understand that there are oftentimes
some people who go over the top... I have to deal with them quite often
in awteen, but I don't feel that circumstances like that should put
everybody under the gun.
Again concerning the swearing issue... to all of you who would tell us
to expand our vocabularly, I ask... why? "Swear" worlds are just that.
Words. They're only taboo because we made them so, and some of them
are downright silly. How did a synonym to poop ever become a taboo word?
Web-links... thats a big pain. I too use those quite frequently and its
really convienent to have them available in chat to reference to another
chatter what a current conversation is about, or to give people
information and whatnot. You guys really need to seriously consider
putting that back in :/
