Actually CoLor, you are not locked out at all. Be honest, you are making
yourself locked out by using obsolete technology that even Microsoft does not support, or very limitedly does. They stopped supporting Win95 a long time ago, and they announced they would not support 98 or ME quite a while back, but extended that support for an unspecified time. Personally, I have never been happier since I upgraded to XP... and 2000. I have seen so few blue screens of death since then. Granted, there was a learning curve, but it's been a great success for me. I have 5 oem copies of XP(3 home, 2 pro) and 1 oem copy of 2000. only 80 to 120 dollars a piece when I bought hardware with them at www.mwave.com but I know some will think that was expensive. It wasn't. I do meet people every day at work that expect thier old Pentium 133 to still work today and be fast and be able to still buy software off the shelf at Bestbuy.... but they are living in a fantasy world. Computers are not like black and white TV's. My Uncle still has a P133... I go over there and he wonders why his high speed internet connection is so slow... with its 64Mb of memory... and his 10gb hard drive is making such a clicking racket as the swap file gets filled with crap. Might I suggest a subscription to PC Magazine, Windows Magazine or any of the PC/Mac trade magazines? Educate yourself on the market and see how the future is coming faster than you think. Owning a computer IS a duel edged sword.... it's good and evil all wrapped up into one package. You are not buying a toaster! Activeworlds was gonna die... yet some folks here were holding onto the past as if they couldn't live with out it. This upgrade, though rather poorly timed, was the kick in the ass we all needed. Activeworlds WILL live on for a couple of more years yet, and I am hoping for a lot longer. Depends on you really... and other folks making that decision collectively. I agree with Sweets that this was an awful time for the 4.1 upgrade in relation to the Cys, but at the same time I completely disagree with her that the Cy's needs to change its agenda in order to accomodate her or anyone not capable of getting into AW4.1 due to their lack of technological savvy. Ultimately, each individual is responsible for themselves, and blaiming the other guy is NOT going to cut it or be acceptable. [View Quote] CyVoteJun 11, 2006, 3:56pm
Sorry LNH, not on her at all. Was not my intention to do that, but I know it
sounded like it. I hope she and everyone else can get on to Cy's as well as AW. CyVoteJun 11, 2006, 5:22pm
Thanks for the guilt trip. However I don't see how your personal life plays
into it. I did not ask you to buy a new machine at all. I'm glad your priorities are straight. 3.6 Shut Down Moved To June 16.Jun 11, 2006, 1:40am

but... damn her, she ignored me :P I'll try again... practice makes perfect. [View Quote] Pewters cost less than $442 nowJun 11, 2006, 7:04pm
....and that includes 7.75% tax and Fedex shipping btw. Oh,also, I did not
choose the lowest prices on all of this. You can go lower. The only thing not in this list is a monitor and printer. You already have those! And, you don't need a floppy disk anymore... almost, and you already have a keyboard and mouse, but I included them just because! This pewter will work great, has WinXP Sp2 and well, it's only shortcoming is the video is integrated onto the motherboard. I just wanted to let you folks know what is available out there at extremely reasonable prices. Not trying to PO anyone! www.mwave.com, often beats newegg, but I always comparison shop.
That spec'd PC was a budget PC... I got good parts! I went for Sony, and Asus, Intel, Logitech, and IBM... very reliable stuff! I used to be an ABIT fan, but they cot flaky, and I know my ISP uses ASUS for all over their near 1000 servers... and every MB by them has been rock solid that I have had. Yes, I could have spec'd an even cheaper PC... but I didn't like the brands. Pewters cost less than $442 nowJun 16, 2006, 3:56am

I don't have this system yet, I intend to order it for a server, so graphics
were not on my list, hence the integrated Geforce chipset. However, I do have a A7N8X-X Asus MB here with an Anthlon XP 2600+ with 1Gb ram and an aging Geforce4 Ti4600.... and I get near 27fps in Serene with it at 200 vis. It's also my current Windows World server. So, if I were to install Windows onto the machine I listed in my previous post, I am thus boosting my cpu to a 2800+, doubling my ram to 2Gb, and using a far better video chipset(built in) and a SATA 80gb harddrive instead of the aging 16Gb IBM drive I'm using now. I'd say there would be a huge improvement. But I suppose it all depends on what you are already using now. [View Quote] Pewters cost less than $442 nowJun 16, 2006, 7:27pm
Oh, also, the system I outlined also uses the new AM2 CPU pinout, and the
whole system is easily upgraded. So, over the coming months buying a couple upgrades could vastly improve it. And in the mean time, prices keep dropping, and you haven't broken your piggy bank. OK, I hope this lands home... somehow. Every single person here who owns a
world, whether p10 or greater has spent money on YOU. You visit a world and you look at it and you might think its great, but a lot of the visitors think it's crap.. the colors are wrong, or the terrain is wack, or whatever. Doesn't matter. Well, no matter how much I personally want to cuss out these people, the fact remains... that people who own worlds have spent their hard earned dollars to show off their world building skills and... well, some people have the audacity to shove it in their faces and tell them what a horrible job they have done. Please, pretty please, tone down your comments and illustrate what you mean. Make it constructive critism, instead of outright disgust. Thank you! OK, Serene has rain... well, a storm! But you would not know it, unless you
visited. I hope you decide to visit! Come to Serene, turn until you see a couple of pyramids... with "?" popping out of them... click on the "right" pyramid... and well.. you will end up in the middle of a rainstorm! Click on the LEFT pyramid and you will end up near a beach with 3 movers.... each is equal... but fun a heck... drag a friend with you... and then race around the island. My friends have said it is a blast.... but they have asked for start and end flags... for a proper race... so I am working on it :) Sooo... I hope soon :) Please enjoy the world until then :) I'm melting... damn that particle rain!Jun 16, 2006, 3:38pm

How did you know?! I never told anyone! Don't tell anyone! I don't want to
go back! nimbusian: Nimbusians are the second most populous race in SW City, alongside Humans; they make up approximately 35% of the population, and have always played a role in this nation's history. Once enslaved, they are free again, and they roam freely all over the Scarabian Republic, settling down to a life alongside humans. Short in stature but wide in girth, Nimbusians appear to be made of a soft, cloudlike yet organic material that is almost impervious to harm. I'm confused, and though that is a normal state of mind for me I would like
to question why AWI now requires a license for the SDK, why there is code to prevent debugging, and why they require an NDA if you want to avoid some of that? I play a few games that the developers allow players to change and I have never seen this kind of action taking place. Take games by bethsoft like Morrowind and Oblivion, you buy their game for 50 bucks and they not only give you the game, but the ability to use an editor to add to the world as well as change it, add new weapons and armor or loot, etc... and then share that with other players around the world. World of Warcraft, a game played by hundreds of thousands, gives you a whole scripting language allowing the player to make tools and new GUI's. You can add graphics, sounds, commands, whatever, as long as you don't change the game itself. Second Life gives you a whole scripting language and the ability to upload any graphics or sounds you'd like to use, and the ability to create any object you can imagine, then sell or freely share it. There are hundreds of bots in SL as well... and perhaps this is the reason for AWI's 'draconian' measures... as some of the bots in SL are very clever critters indeed! Some bots sit there and monitor the auction channel and buy any land that sets off certain triggers, then adding new auctions to resell the land at a tiddy profit... making their owners... free money... You don't buy and sell land in AW... at least not yet... but this could be a precursor of things to come. Hard to see into E N Z O's mind ya know. ;) Anyhow, that's just my 2cents. Personally, I would love to see the existing bots brought back into their glory. At the same time I think the current crop of bot makers should accept it as a challenge to fix their bots the best way they can under the circumstances. And well, if they choose not to, then make their own universe and worlds server software. As you can tell I have dual feelings about the matter. I was looking forward to the hunt. -Tal Well doneJun 17, 2006, 7:40pm

LOL, I thought it was quite entertaining, if not a bit off kilter. I also agreed with it for the most part. I know... shocking. :) Must be just my mood this morning. zonesJun 20, 2006, 10:34pm
Ummm LOL.... there is no technical reason why a check box couldn't be added
to AW World Features to allow for global chat. Now, in a world like Alpha, that would be a huge problem, but in a world with 10 users max, say a P-40 like sweets has, I can't see any reason why not to allow it. [View Quote] Options/CitizenJun 23, 2006, 12:51pm

sweets, you go out of your way to irk people and it does you no service.
*sighs and walks away* Question for sweetsJun 26, 2006, 2:20am
but but sweets, if it does you no service, then... well durn it... find
another way. Just making people mad just isn't the simple be all answer. I mean, I do hear you, and in some ways I agree with you, but then there are other ways I very much do not. I just get irked by reading the same post over and over again over the months, reworded, but basically the same. I really do want your point made, I just wish we could define it in such a way as we could all agree on it. Fact is though, if you rate your world X, you must expect that some people will view it XXX, and others will view it ADULT only, and others will definetly view it as children and teens NOT admitted. Period. If X worlds are allowed in the Cy's, then X worlds will recieve a proportionately lower number of votes than other worlds, simply from the fact that fewer people are allowed in. Here is a simple fact... IF X worlds were suddenly allowed, then X world owners would bitch and complain that they were not getting enough votes, and thus they would insist on having their own X rated categories... thus limiting themselves to a small segment of the population again... but... it would not be the whole community. Solution is SIMPLE. DO NOT allow X rated worlds in the Cy's and do what the adult community in Real life has done and have its OWN awards for the X and XXX rated worlds(movies etc).... a seperate awards completely. Naturally, I do not believe you will approve of that either... and well, I doubt there is enough support in the AW community for it. So, basically, no matter how much I like ya, SHUT UP please. ;) Thank you! Frankly, I believe there is absolutely nothing that could be done to make all parties happy. I wish there were... but the philosophies are very different. Personally, I do not support the Oscar's, Emmy's or any other awards show. I go to my Aunts Oscar BBQ because its a family get together and I get to wrestle with my cousins.... but I could care less who wins... I know which movies I liked watching that year and that's all that matters to me. So, if you want to have a BBQ for the excuse of having an awards show... I'll be there, as long as I can wrestle, but the awards themselves are not that important. :) -Tal Anyone ever made 2048 res texture before?Jun 27, 2006, 11:36pm
Are you going to write up a tutorial on how to make skyboxes with Terragen?
I'd sure like to learn how to do that. Where did you learn it from? :) Who is this Immigration Officer anyhow?Jun 27, 2006, 11:54pm
Has anyone ever seen him? Is it the same Immigration Officer? Or do they
have shifts? How long are their shifts? I see them in every world! Is there a different Immigration Officer in each world? Do they have names and why won't they share them? Well, and darn it, why won't they chat with you! Inquiring minds want to know! Oh, is there in Immigration Officer retreat world? What's it called? Can we sneak in and see what their offtime is like? Maybe be a fly on the wall? No fly swatters please! I'm just saying... -Tal Happy Canada Day!Jul 2, 2006, 3:22am
Well, not sure about the rest of the country, but California is very strict
on guns and alcohol, especially in combination... and when each 4th of July comes around you better be in your backyard, because the police are patrolling the neighborhoods just waiting to hear that gun go off. Now, Los Angeles is special, and so is Santa Ana... the police run from these cities during the 4th... because there are too dang many fools firing their guns up into the air... and you never know where these bullets will land... quite possibly right on your head. Makes me wish bullets came down right where they were launched... NM. In every neighborhood where I live, from mountain to beach, fireworks and guns are not permitted to be fired off... period... drink all you want, but keep it to your own private lot. Watch the "professionals" fire off the big ones. Man, I remember when I was a kid and we used to have 4th of July block parties... all the adults would set up their lawn chairs out in the middle of the street, picnic benches and tables, rows of BBQ's, and let the kids fire off all the fireworks and m80's they wanted... bottle rockets, sparklers.... snakes... whatever! Ok, so some fools set hillsides on fire, and some idiots blew off their hands and fingers... why should this spoil everyone elses fun? The good old days! NM. ;) Happy CANADA day! |
