Does anyone know why the pix quality is so poor in aw, not just 3.6 but also
4.1? I mean really, didn't the world pass by 256 pixels a few years ago?

You can make much larger textures for your OP if you want to, I do for some
things, but ultimately the browser shrinks them down to maybe 256x256. I've
been using 1024x1024 for a couple of things, and to me these images look
sharper than equivelant 256x256's I've made on the same objects and terrain.
The sand terrain in Serene looks very sharp to me and I used a large texture
for it. The grass near GZ however I used a smaller image on and it seems a
little blurry and has jpeg artifacts in it which I'd like to fix. I know
some people frown on using large textures, but I like the results.

Errmmm...huh? No. The browser shrinks it down to the nearest lowest power
of 2 resolution. 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, and 2048 are accepted resolutions
(not including pre-64 sizes).

No point in using higher quality resolutions if your going to degrade it
with poor compression. I won't do any more than 5/100 compression for mine
in the AWE pack. Usually 2 or 3. Compression has nothing to do with
in-world performance because it's all converted into the unified .ras format
in the end.

See my earlier thread - For World Owners: Texture Research a few posts down.

Correct, starting with version 3.0, the browser no longer shrinks all images
down to 256x256 :)
