Why is there need for such things? It ruins the ambience of a world,
how? If I don't see half a building, it should be _my_ choice if I want
to care.

It's my slow ass machine, why should some weirdo (in a world I want to
visit actually) want to make me lag off my ass -- or have the right to
dictate the distance my computer can render? Yeah yeah, I don't have to
visit it... but you also didn't have to read/reply to this. ;)

[View Quote] So, you're implying sex drive (the biological imperative to pass on your
genes) isn't a genetically coded feature? I don't see _many_ animals
doing this. It seems that things like this, bisexuality, are more of a
social outbringing (from the animals that do practice it).

I don't know, genetics was boring.

[View Quote] The genes do need to be on the right chromosome. Hormone production is
in fact controled by your genotype. (that is if you haven't had any
alterations to your genotype... viruses, cancer, etc)

[Since you have a hard time telling speculation and telling when you are
also speculating.. the chemistry and physics aspect is also a
speculation. We have no absolute understanding of how it works and to
base it on a set of rules that we also have no idea how they work is
flawed... the below is also a speculation]

Chemistry has little to do with developing a phenotype as it does with
the transfer of genes. You don't get 3 phenotypes from one genotype, it
just dosn't work like that -- therefore using the physics application
that the universe tends to entropy... there is no set genotype -
phenotype match... but our understanding of physics and chemistry is not
complete as is our understanding of genetics.

I've taken two courses on genetics. They were only introductory but the
fundamentals are the same to proceed to the more advanced courses. It
seems like you're trying to piece together a vague understanding of
partial dominance with a vague piecing together of what you've skimmed.

[View Quote] Yes, a true reflection is different in a sense that these reflections
are just a reversed environment with like a "hole" in the wall. More
likely it's the exact environment that's needed to produce the
reflection duplicated somewhere else on the map that's got a camera in
it, and when characters come near it, they're drawn into the reversed
environment as well (reversed too). Something along those lines.
Certainly the easy to way to do it.

if your _card_ supports it. No card, no stencil buffer, no reflection.

[View Quote] The link you provided was for stencil buffering, OpenGL stencil
buffering at that. Otherwise, you basically restated exactly what I
said in one of it's many incarnations. Sure, you can put the scene into
a buffer... but I was speaking from a strictly low level sort of thing.
Changing buffers around takes a lot more work.

I guess, what I was trying to get at, was something that could be done
regardless of the API you're using. Some graphics cards don't even
support OpenGL.. don't forget about them either.. if they do it's not
too well.
