Next week, Linden Labs will open a public beta of Second Life. Check the
announcement at http://secondlife.com/newsletter/ on the Second Life

I'm Dion Jones (Yeah, I know, really convenient!) but my video card is only

let me just software render it or allow me to change settings that will let

Too expensive. This is my junk computer. My gaming computer will be coming
in in about 3 months and then I'll be getting the Radeon 9800 or perhaps the
new NV35 from Nvidia, depending on how the benchmarks go. :-)

That would require them to actually write a software renderer. Software
rendering is fast becoming obsolete, because most people have decent HAL 3D
accelerators, so it's not worth the time nor money. Unless you want to use
the D3D Reference Rasterizer, which is as speedy as a one-legged 200-year
old tortoise. Get yourself a GF4 (not MX!) card with 64MB vid RAM or more.

Yeah, it's been improved a bit but still very possible, especially if you
just run along a wall at a slight angle. And they added something so that
if you get stuck in an object, you can get out easily, but that just makes
it easier to get all the way through the wall cause you won't get stuck in
it.

It appears that the beta client does not easily let go of the terrain
caching. After reseting my world, the cache was still there, although I
thought the reset simply didn't flatten the terrain. After getting pissed
off by changing my terrain by hand, only to world hop and notice that it was
back the same as it was before I touched it, I deleted my cache and
everything was flat. Not sure why I haven't noticed this issue in other
worlds... perhaps it's because of a registry in those but whatever the
issue, it probably should be fixed.
-Dion
Apr 26, 2003, 7:55pm
There are screwy textures when you enter the world but it goes away upon
moving or selecting the terrain so I don't really care much about that.
There is some strange terrain caching, though, I don't get it. It was all
working fine at one point and then when I reset the world, the terrain
wouldn't recache itself anymore. :-\

Is there a way to make the posts I make instantly marked as read? I find it
annoying that in order to get an entire thread to be marked as read, I have
to click on my posts and wait a second or two. And it's almost as annoying
to right click and click "mark as read".

That is one way to do it. If you want to just read certain posts, and make
all others appear as read....the try right clicking on "general.discussion"
and click "catch up"..that will mark all posts as read.

I am running Windows XP Professionaly with ActiveWorlds 3.2 and my

If that baker begins to lose business and is about to go bankrupt or must
pay the bank back for a loan, etc, etc, that money would go towards keeping
his business alive. Later on he can lower the prices again, but he highers
the prices hoping enough people will stay to get him more money than before
