Whispers

Jan 29, 2002, 4:33am
Just a question. Is there any way, via a cracked browser or something, to see whispers not directed at you, or are they sent
directly to the recipient? Do they have to travel through a server?

I'm not asking to actually do it, of course :) Someone claimed he could do that, and I seriously doubt it. Anyone knows?

Whispers

Jan 29, 2002, 2:26pm
Yeah, probably through a cracked Worldserver. For this case however, the universe is cyberbrain and all worlds are hosted by them,
so there's no risk at all :)
Thanks to all who answered...

And, yes, you CAN do anything once the .exe is on your disk, but the Real Crackers / Script Kiddies ratio is getting lower every
day... that's my feeling anyway...
When someone says "1'm G0nN4 h4x0r Y4 j00 5uX3r!!" I just laugh in his face and give him my IP and email address, and I receive a
file named Surprise.exe in an email 3 days later with "Now you're gonna die !!! hahahahaha ! Ph34r !!!!!!!" in the message body.
(don't laugh, it actually happened)

I understand very well how you want to keep all this data... But still... is it really of any use? I'm sure there are thousands of
builds that NO ONE saw since they were built. Isn't that a waste of disk space on the server?
A few months ago, I still had on my disk thousands of mp3s I had accumulated over the years... I had always been careful never to
delete one cause I might want to hear it again sometime... and my 45GB disk was always full... One day PartitionMagic decided to
crash on me, leaving me with a nice, clean disk. Now I must have something like 500MB of songs that I listen a lot to, and I found
out I'm not missing the others in any way... and have plenty of disk space...
Well, this is just to say that sometimes there's no reason to live in the past, you'd maybe be upset for a few days, but after that
you'd just forget it and enjoy the new possibilities offered. Even a total reset of AW could be fun :)

Well, the point here is not the use of Active Worlds, it would rather be the use of some buildings, in Active Worlds. My definition
of a building being useful is that at least one person has seen it in a few months... buildings that sit there not being seen by
anyone nor owned by anyone just take up server space

I totally agree with your idea that there should be a limited building size on AW. We're just spoiled because we're used to the
freedom we've had, but it was just a stupid decision, or lack thereof. Anyone could cripple the whole world with sparse objects
everywhere using a bot...
We just don't need that much room.

Alpha has got to go

Feb 19, 2002, 9:44pm
I totally agree with you. AW is a drain of resources, and we don't need a world that big anyway (the fact that it's 1% full is a proof of that. What kind of server would they shall we try to fill it?)
It's not going to happen, but I'd just like them to make a new, more reasonably-sized public building world (like 1/50 of AW's size), with all new well thought objects and textures, and just completely delete alphaworld off their hard drives, it's just taking up disk space :P

The old timers wouldn't like it, but would the newbies care? In just a few months it'd be all forgotten.

To me, it just indicates a way for AW to stop people from fleeing. They said that they wouldn't delete builds by people who didn't know their buildings would be deleted. What about those who know ? (that's us) Simple. Pay or have all your buildings destroyed. Shall you ever want to stop paying, and your history will be gone.

Ok, I don't think this is much of a problem (AW can do anything with cit #1 privs anyway, even modify anyone's build without him noticing (the name would still be yours), or see your password, ppw or anything else)

However, here's an idea to MrGrimm : if there has to be a search bot, you could make it enter on a known citizen number (500 for instance, anyway a simple to remember and unused cit). The worlds that want to be indexed would just add that number to their bot rights list. Even private worlds would be indexed if they gave that cit bot rights. And the procedure to be indexed would be explained on the keyword search page so everyone knows.

While I agree that principles have an importance, at some point you have to trust people. If you're that suspicious about AW, don't run their browser. It could very well contain a trojan that allows AW's programmer to access all the files on your computer anytime he wants. Nobody would know if he's never used it yet. Same goes for any non-opensource program. You have to trust people sometimes. That or use Linux.

A bot like that can not only grab the world title, welcome message, and keywords, it can also grab the builder's list and then it's database can be used to identify which world cit#123456 has builder's rights in, and once it knows that, it can be programmed to systematically go from one world to the next destroying cit#123456's builds while leaving the rest of those worlds intact.

That's just one example of what could be done with the information contained in the World Rights box.

Law In "RL" vs Law In Computers

Feb 26, 2002, 5:14pm
You simply don't understand the meaning of his post. He never praised having a bad attitude or something.

What I understand from his posts is that while morality is widely respected in the real world, it is not in the cyberspace, and you have to cope with it. From a developer's point of view, that means preventing users from having a way to do bad things. In the real world those things just won't be done because they're bad, even if no one is there to prevent them from doing it.
Correct me if I didn't get the meaning of your posts, hiroshi.

One more thing. Before the U.S. can try to root out the wrong off of the whole planet, they'll have to start by showing the right example, and they are a long, long way from doing so. And walking in the opposite direction. Right now I see them just as bad as China for that matter.
