What are the possibilities of this? I opened Quantum today. I had some
visitors. One visitor was a tourist. My world isn't set up to have tourists
as visitors. Has this happened anywhere else?

Someone has managed to hex edit the ActiveWorlds client and since your world
server is not setup to disallow tourists, he may enter. When the world
server for 3.3 comes out, it will most likely have something on it to
prevent this. Of course, someone will find a way to hex that as well :-)
hehe.

The tourist feature of a world is checked at the entrance.
As soon as you are connected to a world, you can switch to
tourist mode and stay there as a tourist. But as soon as
you leave and try to enter again, it will tell you that no
tourists are allowed.

I just tested this theory and it doesn't seem to work. When you switch to
tourist mode it automatically forces you to leave and return to the world at
the spot where you had been originally.

It isn't a theory, as it worked for me and some friends
who tried. Maybe it depends on the version of the world
server. Try it in MoonBeam, that's where it worked for us,
with the official browser, no beta and no patch.

Not if your world is open to everyone it doesn't. I tested it in my world.

Impossible, you cant hex edit to allow tourist enter. You would need to
mess with the login packet to the world, you would need to put a proxy
between the client and server. There are only a few people that know how to
do that. I doubt they did. There is a bug in the browser where if you log
into a world as a cit, then login as a tourist, your a tourist in the world.
Trust me, its more smoke and mirrors, not hacking. Anyway, the browser is
encrypted, doubt someone could get past it.

Not that this bug is much of a threat to AW's livelyhood, because it
requires a citizen login before using tourist mode - I doubt that it's high
on the priorities list to fix.

Well just to give you all something else to think about. The tourist
revisited me. Entered at GZ. Plus I had local teleports turned off.

Perhaps the person who entered was just wearing a tourist avatar? If they
have greyed out text they're tourists, dark text is citizens.

Newer world server, that trick only works on older world servers.

Yup, the AW client is set to disallow tourists on entry but doesn't check
when someone changes to a tourist. That will probably be changed in 3.3.

No, the world server just doesn't kick you if its an older version, nothing
to do with the client. And, it is changed in 3.3, AW and AWTeen are both on
3.3a servers, and that trick doesn't work in either of them.

Well, the client is what doesn't allow you into other worlds when you're a
tourist :-)

Oh please, can the sarcasm canuck.

It happens all the time that people mistake citizens in tourist avatars for
tourists. The only way to tell is through the text they type.

All server. The uniserver just wont pass along the host/port of the world
server if there's no tourist enter enabled. Also, in the new world servers
with the protocol update, don't allow you to do the cit to tourist trick
because they can check the universe about the status of tourists being able
to enter. So, the client has no interaction because it can be hacked or run
through a proxy. So, no, the client is not involved with the decision to
not allow tourists to enter worlds. Sorry.

For some reason it won't work in some worlds - I dont think it works in AW worlds

yep, it didn't work in AW or AWTeen, i think this is because AW and AWTeen
are running newer world servers that are compatible with 3.3

Well, people could do something like, share the price of a citizenship and all connect through it, then go to tourist mode... Bah, no big deal anyway, it's obviously fixed by the new build :)
This is the kind of thing any programmer would have thought about when they implemented the option, I'm sure roland didn't forget about it. He most likely just felt it was unimportant and too much of a hassle to add right away...

We tried this once, wanted to have the citizenships of a
world for building with citizen priviledges only in this
world. But the tourists who took the citizenships refused
to give them back. They claimed not to have understood
the idea - and if anyone believes that: Please contact me,
I have still land to sell in the Andromeda galaxy.

So actually Roland could forget about this, it is not really
a way to bring tourists into a world without tourist rights.
It is not really important, maybe good for surprise, but
that's about all you can use it for.
