well kellee with a dot, im guessing its the parents really, like some tv

complaining about them, so maybe they dont want the same people complaining?
you know how people can be, complain about anything for any reason what so

The GK take their jobs *way* to seriously, so I wouldn't worry about that...

However, "shit" is still a bad word in the USA. I realize that, as society
is decaying into moral decadence, the word is used frequently and thus
people are becoming, in general, desensatized to its use.

I also realize that some people can use the word appropriately. By
appropriately I mean using the word infequently to describe something they
feel strongly about. But, there are also a lot of little kids around the
gate that would go around using "shit" as every other word in their
sentences. That's, definitly not what we want. Why let everyone at the gate
have a potty mouth?

You must also consider the fact that this situation is a "slippery slope".
If AWI removes "shit" from the eject list, then the next question will be
why don't we remove "damn", "fuck", "mother fucker" and "god damn" from the
list. Then there'd be a whole lot of cussing at AWGate, and that's not the
kind of image AWI wants to portray to newcomers at the gate.

Why not implement a chat filter that one can set ..let's say you don't
want to see a particular word in telegrams or chat ...you could tell AW
to filter it out...instead of being ejected for it. That way everyone
can be happy ...

I still do not consider "damn" to be a cussword. Comes from , also in the in
bible used ,condem, which mean judge.

Not sure if "shit" is a "bad word" or not, I guess it depends on how it is
used. I stepped on dogshit vs I think you are full of shit.

When someone claim that children learns to cuss in AW, that is as redicilous
as someone claiming that someone who jumped from a roof thought he could
fly, because he could do it in Aw also. Children lerans most cussing from
other children mostly older children. One can hear really grose language
even in kindergarten , and YES from children who has never used internet.
Overprotecting is often as dangerous as no protection at all. As soon as
someting become forbidden or taboo, it also become interesting. In my
opinion information is the best way. Children are not morons or stupid, they
understand things if they are explained in a for them good way. Parents can
often be total morons and idiots tho.

I also find it quite unlikely that children who are so young that they
cannot read will learn much in AW. I know someone will now say they know a 5
years old who can read. I know, but that is an exeption. Since even a large
amount of teenagers (especailly in USA) cannot read properly, not to mention
spell; I do not see a reason to start treating everyone as a 4 years old,
just because one 4 years old out of 100 000 might be able to read.

Not sure which "kid's" programs you watch on a regular basis, but here in
the states they DON'T allow shit or any other cuss words to be used. The
news is a different matter and if and when such language is used, they
usually bleep it out or at least try to. There are still a lot of people
that are offended by words such as that. AWI still has to follow certain
guidelines here in the states in order to allow users of ALL age groups.
Even though some kids in the states use that kind of language when they
arent' in the presence of their parents, I would say the majority of them
are conscious enough to "watch their mouths" when their parents are within
earshot. However, when parents are not present while their child is
chatting, their kid will try to imitate Chris Rock and pour forth a
paragraph so foul, it'll burn yer ears. THAT is why AW is so strict on the
language thing at the gate area, where all the new folks enter for the VERY
first time!!!
C'mon... Use some common sense. Put yourself in the shoes of a parent of a
10 year old, who is checking out Active Worlds for the first time, to make
SURE their child will be safe and if it is worth investing in. Would you
want your kid to come on and think its ok to let burning sewage emanate from
his or her mouth????? Not only does it earn your child a bad reputation with
others, but it also slanders you as their parent because you didn't teach
them manners.
And whatever happened to just plain ole "decency"??? Why do we feel the need
to offend others??? Can't we just accept the fact that we should all try our
best to NOT offend? Or do you find delight in seeing how many people cringe
when you say these things?
If people feel these words building up inside them to the point of iminent
combustion, then those people can, and should utilize the PG and R rated
worlds that are available for that purpose. In the meantime, bite yer tongue
while in the G worlds and get a grip. Realize why it is like it is, and
don't obsess over WHY you can't cuss words in front of children. Obviously
people who don't mind hearing words like that have no trouble going to those
other worlds, while folks who mind it will tend to stay in the G rated
areas. And I'm sure this isn't a thing that only happens in the states hon.
It's just good manners. ;-"D

I agree with you on what you said about children who cannot read yet.
However, usually a parent is with that child when visiting AW. As far as
children not learning anything from adult behavior you are wrong. Are you a
parent? What would you do if a ten year old asked you in whispers what
intercourse meant? It happened to me a couple of years ago. Apparently a guy
wanted her to "perform intercourse" with him in AW. I have never felt so
helpless in all my life, not knowing how to proceed. I could not answer her.
It was not my place to do so, especially since I didn't know how much she
already knew or possibly learned from her male "friend" online. Online is
NOT the place for a child to learn these things. And obviously it DOES
happen!!!! Because you have never seen it happen, does not mean it cannot. I
have met a few guys in AW who don't care at all how old a person is online,
just as long as they get their rocks off. Recently I burst someone's bubble
when I pointed out to him that he could be cybering with a 67 year old man
named Elmer instead of the person he was imagining. When someone logs on
with the name of HotToTrot or SexyLady, you can't just assume it is who you
hope it is. Yes it might be that perverted old man or that 11 year old girl
getting their kicks as you perv with them. Yes kids CAN learn things online
that they shouldn't. One thing they do learn from watching us adults online
is what is acceptable and what isn't. If they see us spewing out garbage
from our mouths, they will and do think its acceptable. If they see we use
restraint about certain subjects, they will also try to use restraint. We
can and should teach our children good values online. As I mentioned to
Kellee earlier, if people feel the overwhelming need to use foul language
and get their jollies, they should consider visiting a PG or R rated world.
Why do people feel the need to do that in a G rated world? They know little
kids come there. They know new people come there to examine the program.
It's just common sense.

Bravo lioness. I agree with you 100% I think too many people these days are
too self centered and caught up in themselves and their own little circle to
care about common decency or to truly care about others anymore, and think they
should be able to do whatever they feel like without having to care about any
effects it has on others. The sense of society, of community, treating people
with common courtesy and decency seems to be forgotten.

I'd take exception to everyone of the totally amazing statements (quoted at
the end of my post) apparently used as facts (but where did the writer find
those facts?) But as for the main topic here, I can't imagine anyone not
seeing it the same way as Jerme and Lioness. If a world is G rated...doesn't
that mean G rated anymore? It should have the lowest common denominator of
what is allowed, just as X should have the highest-or why else have ratings?
Why keep lowering and raising the bar? If it continues, then the statement
made by Linn WILL be true in another 50 years. How desensitized (aptly
phrased by Jerme) can we get, finally? If "shit" is objectionable to even
one in a G-Rated world, then it should be disallowed for all. Go to each
world and say "shit" then stay in the one that allows it, and then say it
all you like, 'til maybe it piles up around your knees :-) But remember, if
you don't want something going on in your world, you have the right to
decide that, too, don't you? Who gets to decide for AWGate? You?

".....Since even a large amount of teenagers (especailly in USA) cannot read
properly, not to mention spell;....."

(Anywhere I look, in anyone's statistics, all the "modernized" countries
could use some work here, but the US certainly isn't on the bottom of
anyone's list. We weren't doing so well, but are improving, at foreign
language skills).

"....or since the school system allows all kinds of words to be said and sex
acts
in schoolrooms...."

(Damn! In all my visits to schools, in several capacities, I missed those
sex acts! Any schools I know anything about, you even have to have a
permission slip from home to participate in single gender sex education
classes or view PG or R rated movies like "The Gladiator" with Russell
Crowe-but these things I'm sure will bring derision, too. If you were being
sarcastic here Linn, then I apologize for taking your seriously. I never
have before.)

"....Damn is not on the list. But the bible beater GK's don't like you
saying it because they're raised to go to church and only the priest can
say damn....."

(Any time I'm in church for a church service we do say damn, hell, and even
Jesus Christ, but in the proper context. The only thing I've ever learned
about saying "damn" is that we cannot actually damn someone to eternal
damnation, nor does the Pastor, Priest or other religious leader. I don't
ever remember of saying shit though, I guess church is too G-rated for that.
Once in a private setting I did hear my Pastor say he was pissed off though.
I guess he is only human.)

Look, shit, fuck, damn, whore, bitch etc. are a some of the words banned in
AWGate. Why? We as GKs must keep kids unexposed to this kind of fowl manner.
Imagine, a 9 year old going around and saying "Hey shithead! Whats up?" if
they are lead to believe profanity is OK to use in normal places, then they
will start using it. I can only imagine how a parent would feel if their kid
went around cussing. Their most likly responces would be to feel like they
arnt being good parents, to have self doubt in their ways. It is EASY to not
give yet another avenue of learning profanity to children. You may say "But
its on TV ALL THE TIME" but that is their problem. Not ours. If you say,
what the hell. Theres enough places already, yes there might be, but lets
keep ActiveWorlds off that list. While GKing i am suprised at the number of
mature adults ive known to just waltz in there and cuss their head off
getting themselves ejected by me or CA. Kids dont need to be exposed to
profanity here. Ive known kids on aw as young as SEVEN, 7, Siete. I know how
it feels, i use profanity in every day discussion, but i DO refrain in
AWGate. So, execise some goddamn self control and stop cussing in AWGate.

[View Quote] Your theory is flawed. If they know the word, saying it is not
introducing a new idea to their head. They know the word, they know it
has the meaning it has, saying it does not redfined the words meaning.
Saying does little else than putting collective thoughts together in a
coherent manner.

Simply put: A is defined as milk. Charlie knows what milk is and knows
that A equals milk. Frank says A, charlie assumes Frank has said milk.
Gatekeeper 121 is lactose intolerant, and bans the word A. Frank says
A, Gatekeeper 121 ejects Frank, Charlie assumes that milk is the wrong word.

This is a classic distributive property. Banning the word A does not
remove Charlie's knowledge of what A is, or what milk is. Therefore
banning certain does not "ruin" a childs innocence or whatever the
excuse is. If the person knows the meaning behind the word, they have
nothing to "ruin," excluding their current ego.

Well Bowen, using your analogy (don't you just love 'em?) let's say that
AWGate people are only allowed the blandest of diets, it's the entry point
and they don't want anyone to have any bad reactions. (what's accepted for
one isn't necessarily acceptable to another-why take chances?) Bring your
milk with you if you want to but don't pass it around-keep it to yourself.
Go to a PG13 world and drink a little milk if you need it so bad. Now, if
you want to have some Haagen Daz ice cream...you know, like Café Mocha
Frappé or a decadent Chocolate Fudge & Almonds bar, I'm afraid that's pretty
X-rated if you ask me, but well worth the risk of whatever you're risking by
having some (in the proper place). But still, why waste it where it's not
appreciated or accepted by everyone? Have it where people go just for that
purpose and have there own with them and you wont risk being told off.
Unless of course you're doing it on purpose, like seeing how far you can go
until you're booted and then complaining about the unfairness of it all. If
a person has so little control of his language (or diet, or sexual urges or
whatever) that he can't stop himself from doing what's unacceptable in his
present surroundings then that's another problem entirely.

Now, regarding Linn's comments about sex in the classrooms, my guess is most
everyone past kindergarten school knows about it to some degree, knowing
about it doesn't do terrible things to a person like you say and is
something fantastic for them to look forward to and plan for, but allowing
it in the classroom just might have some weird effect on most 5 to 16 year
olds. They see it's an accepted practice by everyone everywhere at any time
and they will become desensitized to it and start doing it at their older
sister's wedding, thereby causing a bad reaction from some people,
especially we pussy USA citizens. Besides, I for one save my worst language
for when I stub my toe in the dark, it's so much more satisfying than using
old, worn out words that I use all the time. They'd become meaningless to me
and I'd risk using them where they aren't meaningless to others.

And speaking of kids in church, one of the many "funny"(?) things I've seen
or heard a kid do in church lately was when a little girl about 2 was mad
and called her mother a "bits". Does it sound the same to you as it did to
me? I don't think she meant AlphaBit Phalpha or that they even ever heard of
AW or I bet the mom would have called for a gatekeeper. There was one GK she
might have tried though, Saint Peter, because I am sure she wanted to die.
