Like many other loyal Active Worlds customers, I felt very disappointed
and betrayed when I found that the announcement of 4.1 in AWGate today
was just an April Fools prank. We have been waiting for 4.1 for months,
and many of us have been very excited. I am sick and tired of being lied
to by AWI, with continual broken promises about 4.1's release date. It
was not funny and was very insensitive to use our anticipation against
us like this.

So to all those reading this newsgroup post, I have just one thing to
say: April Fools. I happened to think the prank was funny, and if you
were upset by it, I think you really need to reevaluate how much
importance you place in AW. When I saw people getting mad at this, I
could only think: "Get a life. A real one." Honestly, how sad is it to
consider the joke "poor taste"? Jokes about the disabled are poor taste.
Pranking people about a computer program is not. I am very glad that
these people don't seem to represent the majority:

Azraeleus: okay whoever is responsible for this needs to be hurt

Gent: from what I can see, this is in VERY poor taste, given how long
people have waited, and how many people have left AW for SL

Veger o: OH FUNNY yual tell them its a joke but NOT ME

shala PR: NOT freaking funny

I have a hunch that we're at least getting open beta today.

Honestely, who's going to believe they're going to make us download a new
version from a link in AWGate?

It didn't say open beta or anything, it straight up said 4.1 with larger
pixels (hint). They have a better method of sending updates out. ;)

delivered to us "now"

I found the April Fools stuff funny.

Hope it lives up to the hype thats been created, at this rate it will be out
of date before it is released.
Honestly, if ya gonna make a release date, make it reasonable- pay attention
to time and resouirce managent; there will always be unforseen problems with
this type of thing, but seriously...
No offense to everyone who are working on the forthcoming release, as I am
sure they are working very hard and putting a lot of effort in-infact they
are probably working doubly hard due to the unrealistic release dates that
keep getting put back but this ill management is very poor at the most basic
level and only serves to mess everyone around. Both the customers and the
employees.
For one I am getting bored of waiting around and then having the odd random
communication about the release date being - "its not ready for release
yet" - Well, ha ha ha. Nice one; comic genius. I think everyone will still
be laughing at that little gem of hilarity when it still hasnt been released
next year. Yes- my ribs sure are hurting after that one, what a corker.
It all boils down to something called time and resource management- its not
hard, I could even recomend several very good books on the subject that
might help out with this- very simple really.. in a nut shell- all you do
is make realistic deadlines and keep your customers updated on the progress.
Making unrealistic deadlines that keep getting put back just means as Rossy
rightly points out;- that the company appear to be full of shit. That means
its not very good for customer relations. Period.
Who wants to be invovled with a company that cant meet its deadlines?
Did StageCoach Island have this problem? Why are we still waiting? etc etc
etc.
So as you can see -you really dont have to be a complete halfwit with even
half a braincell to comprehend the knock on effect it has when projects are
badly managed. Really it just serves to highlight the dire lack of
organisation and management ability to everyone involved. Set backs are
inevitable; so you prepare for them and keep people informed as to a
resonable and realistic timescale. Especially your customers.
If you cannot achieve this simple task and are in any sort of bussiness,
then you wont last long. Makes one wonder doesnt it.
If as much work went into Stage coach Island by AWI staff as it did getting
4.1 up and running we might have it by now.
Where the hell is our money actually going?? Where the hell is the money
from these corporate jobs going??
I see advertisments for more staff, yet a distinct lack of progress. Weird.
Personally I dont really care too much and I can wait for 4.1, but it sure
does raise some interesting questions.
I just hope it can live up to the hype and to the competition- which is
growing day by day and from strength to strength.
But lets face it- if AW really wanted to compete with its existing market it
has attracted, its gonna make sod all money. So diversifying into corporate
contracts- just as There.com did with its milatry contract (and
interestingly enough almost shut down its public world as a result) is one
area that will actually make money. Ofcourse the other choices AW have to
make any real cash is to go in direct competition with places like 2ndlife-
but that isnt going to happen without the out embracing the out and out
commercialism that 2ndlife revels in- and that isnt what AW seems to be all
about.
2ndlife and its counterparts are all updated regulary aswell plus many have
thier own well established economies- something which leaves AW standing..
So I cant see AW going toe to toe with it even with a new all singing and
dancing suped up V4.1 (that probably wont be updated for years to come).
But despite my sceptisism of the commercial success of AW- (not a concern of
mine other than it keeps going and we get 4.1 soon!!), AW is the best and
always will be the best, so it will be here I stay as my home.
But after being made to wait all this time with failed promises of release
dates and feeling as a customer left a bit in the dark and a bit confused
over it all; I really do hope it does live up to the hype. I am sure it
will, but I wont hold my breath, I might be here next year looking like a
very purple beetroot if I do.
Other companies seem to be able to set and meet deadlines, they would be out
of bussiness if they couldnt- So why cant AWI ?
Sort it out AWI.

I would like to point out that the stagecoach system is a galaxy not a
universe, also it has not had the issue of allowing users to create there
own objects, movers, sdk bots etc.....

As all was pre made for stagecoach that build of 4.1 did not have to provide
support for previous versions or realtime build support.

While I appriciate that some people did'nt see the funny side of the April
1st prank by Enzo or are a little upset by the slipped release date I did
comment last June that I personally would rather wait a year before its
release or until it was working and had all the features promised rather
than have a stripped out shell just to meet a release date.

Tho I do agree that perhaps if the energy for the April 1st prank was put
into cummunicating to the community a rough progress update on 4.1 even if
it was just to say 70% completed with 200 bugs to iron out and all being
well another 3 months before a public beta program then I am sure people
would be a little happier well some anyway and those that moan would still
do so :)

You have to see the funny funny side tho I mean it was April 1st after all.

Maybe AWI is unsure what to tell the users - they may fear they've blown the
version out of the water already.. I cannot comment on it anywhere near as
much as Rick or Chris, but from my observations, there are still somethings
that need to be fine-tuned.

For the majority, whom are not apart of any testing, yet read up on the 4.1
help files -- it is still greatly undocumentated.

Even though some users somehow get a look at the splash screen, help files,
and so on, whatever AWI wants to hide about 4.1, they can.

I guess the typical paying end-user will not know until they finally get
their hands on the upgrade - just when that will be is anyones guess.

yea i did thanks Rossy, was just using what you said to illustrate my point
lol
In retrospect im being kinda cynical, but hey, I pay money for this, be nice
to kept informed to a reliable and resonable level, not askin much I dont
think.
As far as jokes go tho, Ive heard funnier ones, but It didnt annoy or
supproise me as the others you mentioned in your post; Im just bored of
waiting and the hype :)

"in a nut shell- all you do

Tell that to Adobe, would you? I was a beta tester for them for several
years and we heard very little from them about deadlines and such.
Apparently, letting the end-user in on deadlines and progress matters little
since Adobe is a corporate giant and keeping the users in the blind doesn't
seem to have hurt their business much.

Rossyfox, I have a life. I am severely annoyed at this joke, though. It IS
in poor taste. Its like promising to take your kid to Disneyland, and then
saying APRIL FOOLS!!! You wouldn't understand how that feels, I guess. I
have been waiting for 4.1 since rumors in the middle of last year. Don't
tell me to get a life. Its very insulting. I rarely use Active Worlds only
because I am waiting.

don't do april's fools jokes anyway. so, seeing how it was april 1st, wy the
surprise?
but hehehe, soon as i get children, totaly going to use that april fools
joke! ^_^

If you are "severely" annoyed by something like this... then you aren't
out in RL enough! :P Lighten up people.. have a sense of humor, it's a

properly? I'm sure 4.1 will come soon enough. And that comment above

to click on the avatar next to u to activate anything. hahahaha! Common
sense people! I wonder how many people actually clicked on the avatar next
to them. ROTFLMAO!!!

Yes, because 4.1 coming out will so be like going to Disneyland.

One difference here: 4.1 is still coming out, it just didn't happen on
the 1st of April.

Tell me, what feature about 4.1 are you most looking forward to? Y'know
what I am probably looking forward to most? Finally being able to dock
the damn contacts list again. The way it used to be back in the good ol'
days. Either I never noticed how retarded everyone was back then, or the
average AW user was less retarded.

I stand by my sweeping statement. kthxgoodnite

[View Quote] And only an extremely young and naive 'kid' wouldn't instantly figure
out that the statement was in regards to april fools. They more than
made it clear it was a cute joke as it was so over the top and obvious.
You almost couldn't call their message "april fools" as no one could
be fooled by such a message. Did you sit there 'clicking the closest
av' and then calling tech support, barely able to communicate due to
your extremely flustered and agitated state when the pixels didn't get
bigger? Were you actually tricked, or dare I say "fooled", by that?

I could see some complaints from lifeless obsessives if they actually
provided a link to a 4.1 download and after installing it and running
it, it turns out to be a joke that replaced your entire cache with
animated pictures of a dancing enzo, but even so: April Fools, get over
it, grow up, get a life.

In poor taste? What? I could see if their april fools joke was some
sort of message about how 4.1 was delayed due to a zionist conspiracy
that destroyed the world trade center and used their diamond powered
jew-rays to cause flooding worldwide to increase the bulk price of
pixels. That is poor taste. What is in poor taste here?

No, we wouldn't understand how it feels as we're not riduclous
high-strung lunatics. Insulting? Well good, you need some insulting to
perhaps shock the stupid out of you.

In closing,
You are dumb and silly, sit in the quiet-room untill you've calmed down
enough to come back and play. That, or keep having your indignant fit
as its quite entertaining to the rest of us. Tee hee :)
