Interesting how these things can get so blown out of proportion and
deconstructed in cyberland, indeed I am sorry to hear your account has been
shutdown Strike...
You have always dealt wiht me in a no nonsense manner which I have
appriciated.. no BS and professionally aswell I might add.
I hope the confusion is resolved and we dont see another playground
situation to be let to arise.
Many variables as to what could or may or may not happened.
Sometimes it is hard when people work on projects and tempers get frayed.
But let us remember it can be tough at the top.
Prolly lots of pressure with the 4.1 browser being created... Lots of
headaches etc...
With any luck everyone will remember the goal of what we are here for... to
progress... move forward... and develop the technology we all enjoy.
You've always had that in mind when talkin to you Strike... and you will
suceed in pretty much anything you do even if it dont pan out, you've proven
that with your Evo bot and other work- and remember you have head start on
many older than your age...
You are able to act professionally and without drama in my personal
expereince- so something does seem a miss...
Hopefully the veil will lift itself and all will be well... you are indeed
an asset to AW and will be missed if its a permanent ban ;(

What do you look for in a situation report?

Oct 11, 2005, 1:35pm
Any way of creating some sort of watermark technology for the chatlogs so
that they can not be faked for future reference?
I know this seems a really difficult thing to tackle and might be a bit too
much to ask- and I cannot see any way sure fire way of making an uneditable
chatlog really, though it would be a useful tool for any world owner ...
As for a situation report it seems to cover a multitude of sins, good work.
New Evo's shaping up :)
Cheers Strike ;)

Ive found the Evo really useful for editing the world atrributes and giving
citezens rights to my world without the hassel of fiddling wiht writing in

bother- good on Strike for making somethign that tackels these areas I say-
and makes those who choose to use it's life much easier for world owning-
and when they could be in the browser. Maybe they will be added sometime...
sometime... in the far far far off future.. when we have all passed away...
But until then, we can work aorund it and make out lives easier by using
inovative solutions like the Evo offers.. I agree theses things should be in

Hmm doesnt that say something? ..

Conflict within AW

Aug 24, 2005, 7:08pm
As the stress and pressures of modern day living get to us all sometimes, I
would just like to pause for a minute to discuss and make some observations
about conflict within AW as it has been such a prominent theme of late.

And as Jerry Springer does in his wonderful informative programs, I'd like
to make a final thought or two :)

Activeworlds- and ofcourse its many couterparts, present us with a medium
which is quite neutral to begin with; it is only until when we apply the
human element that things start to go awry. We should remember that we are
in a place which contains a varied and diverse population- a seething mass
of different people, groups, each wiht thier own seperate ideas, oppinions
and philosophies- so it is easy to see that conflict is bound to be a
certain and unaviodable part of life here online- the same within in any
community infact,- and this is especially so for those of us who use the
net in thier day to day living.

Indeed Activeworlds, There, Secondlife- and all sorts of MMO's and MMORPG's
are ultimately becoming a lifestyle choice for many- and with such a rich
range of diversity of paticipant on the internet, conflict arises frequently
and will continue to do so into the future. So it is really is a matter of
tolerance and how we choose to deal with conflict when it arises.

Text based communication can be a very interesting and in my experience it
can be seen to create a certain ammount of paranoya- as we have seen in
previous posts, citezens unsure of the actual truth and jumping the gun
slightly in areas of suspected conflict- which makes it important for us to
try to communicate and be as articulate as possible when dealing with any
issue in text.
I am sure many who have been here long enough have lost friendships or
relationships to text due to misunderstandings -or by a guilty by
association mentality; A suspicion that someone has said something or done
something wrong to them - when it may not really be the case.

Text can be a delicate medium and misunderstandings are so easy- the ins and
outs can get blurred like chineese whispers and how one person understands a
situation may be very different to how the other understands it.
It is very sad indeed when people do not take the time to find out the truth
of a situation and take the easy option- (All too easy infact) to switch
people off with mute or ignore them and not even try and deal with it. I
have seen too many good friendships broken like this. Albeit mute is useful
in those annoying tourist situations, but to switch someone off is not
always a wise choice and can be very hurtful aswell- it can only breed more
resentment and strengthens the paranoya- What are they thinking? What have
they said to whom? Are they really my friend? And so it continues.

So from this we can see how important it is for us to all try to comunicate
as articulately as possible within the boundaries of text.

Would we talk to someone the same as we type?
Text is a powerful medium.
I know I dont always, but I try- the loss of feeling and emotion is one
thing- though within text respect can seemingly go out the window sometimes-
and this always never fails to get peoples back up. It is much easier to end
a conversation before it has ended aswell, which is not how we would
normally communicate- so it is even more paramount we try to be as clear as
possible and be patient with one another online. And try to find the truth
within a conflict.

I was so happy to see Disembodied earlier and selfaware postings, which
brings me onto my next point that I feel is important to talk about.
Online friendships can be very intense indeed, when they are good they are
often great- but when they go wrong- they often go very wrong. The intensity
of sitting behing the computer is somewhat to blame for this- for when you
enter this headspace you are in control of what you do, your machine, where
you are, who you talk to etc. For world owners- like myself I have learnt
that this God like quality can go to ones head- and to be selfaware is part
of the battle, self restraint and the ablity to listen and be patient the
other. Disembodied's post was a very refreshing thing to see here in the
newsgroups- the thought that he was not too proud and more importantly
selfaware enough to say "ahh well I was in a bad mood, I wasnt as tactful as
I could have been, but this is my oppinion....", was an open and an
inteligent response.

So to conclude in true Springer style;

Conflict is inevitable from time to time in any area of human interaction,
it is however up to us how we choose to deal with it- should we choose to
block or ignore all who we dont understand or have conflict- (or suspected
conflict) with - in the attempt to keep ourselves safe, - then we should
realise we will be be blocking out people who could be good friends.
Keep a check on your paranoya until you know for sure.
Surely shouldnt we at least try to find out the truth first of a situation
and try to find a resolve?
And if things cant reach that resolve, then we should think hard before
making a public statement- and make sure we are clearly understood, trying
to keep communications open long enough to reach some sort of understanding
and any public or private accusations should be backed up with actual fact
not heresay or mere association.
And try to discuss it in a reasonable manner in an appropriate place. These
things are though bound to surface in the public realm from time to time-
and we should also understand this.. But if they do arise it is important
for AW, the place where we all inhabit and supposedly share the same love
for, that we do not put off prospective citezens in the process.
In general AW is a very happy place- But if it stops becoming happy for
you...
Theres an off switch, take a break and use it.

If only I was this perfect person that Jerry keeps telling us we should be..
sighs....Lol

Anyways- this is askin way too much I know lol, but I thought some of this
might resonate with some of you here who have been here long enough to
experience conflict in its many guises here in AW.
One more thing- this is in no way directed at anyone specific in the recent
spate of postings, this is a mere observation of the recent postings and a
thoughtful discussion of some of the issues that I believe to be relavent.

Many thanks,
Keep it real,

Heretik :))

World Owners Group

Sep 19, 2005, 7:29pm
Something occurred to me when sittin on my world today; well a few things
did actually.

One was how I really should clear up the small pile of nail clippings that I
had neglected to clear away from last night which were looking rather
unsavery next to the packet of prawn cocktail quaver crisps (potato chips)
on my desk that I was about to devour.

But not only that, the realisation that I wanted to share with you all was-
How about a World Owners Group?
This could be benificial in many ways, networking between world owners could
provide valuable resources to help each other.
World owning and building can be a difficult job and a central forum as I am
propsing to set up could be instrunmental in aiding networking and getting
things done.
Not only could it provide practical advice and support, but builders and
modellers could advertise their services for off alpha building- even
specify what sort of project they are wanting to work on - plus the worlds
get a platform to let the universe know what they are working on should they
choose.
Dedicated projects that need builders or modellers could be set up faster by
owners and ideas can be turned into reality.. well.. virtual reality.. heh..
i made a funny..
Anyways- as a group it could also be a great networking tool in obtaining
practicle advice on what to do and how to approach some of the social
situations that can arise aswell- it is a great deal of trust we give to
people who we let build in our worlds after all- and that they put in us for
not deleting or destroying thier work.
So thoughts and ideas please.. and if anyone is interested in helping please
let me know...

Many thanks,

Heretik :)

I am sure we can all join forces in some way, I hope so, for the community..
With reference to Kennith's post I personally think it is important to cover
all world types- being unbiased-So X worlds included! I would hope this
would be a resourec that is useful and accessable to All worlds.. Mauzes
pages are the indespensable resource into world owning ofcourse.. and I
would hope with permission we could have links to this sort of resource...
contributions for everyone on this would be great - Ive set up a basic forum
that I think covers most things already.. although if there are any
suggestions on sections and catagories feel free to suggest things, so lets
see how we fare... feel free to register and hopefully create a useful
resource :)

Sword Fighting

Dec 16, 2005, 9:37pm
Heya , sounds neat, what sort of style of sword fighting are you attempting
to recreate?
There are many different styles and types, fencing uses 3 primary weapons
for example each wiht a different style;
Foil, Epee and Sabre; then there's the eastern kantana- another discpline
and completely different style- or are you looking for a medievel broadsword
recreation? (possibly the easiest style that you could recreate in aw
avatars I should assume if that is what you are intending).
Not a whole lot online wiht follow through pictures, prolly best off wiht
lookin in books, there are plenty avaiable- but this site does have a some
shots of sword techniques of a medievil style
http://www.bellatrix.org/school/ which could prove useful- and provides some
terminology aswell...
Hope it helps,

Why I'll never go to a gor world again

Jan 22, 2006, 8:15pm
Yeah I have to agree, that was a very balanced report you gave of your
experience Baro and you do consider the facts well in a very unbiased
manner.

It is true that the Gorean community have a certain "reputation" attactched
to them, which is sad, and when you are trying to find out information and
learn about a community and not welcomed you have to wonder... infact the
friction that you say you have been met with in attempting to find out more
about the philosphy/community only serves to support the given "reputaion"
and increases the space between the other communities here, seperating and
alienating- or tho I can understand that there is some reason for the
suspicion of outsiders and we should make special consideration that the
alien lord master insectoid race may decend upon us at any time...
So it would seem apt and understandable that some vigilence by the Gorean
community is kept.

However, I have noticed the trigger happy power tripping that seems to go on
there sometimes aswell as you Baro, and it is evident for brutally stupid
reasons, a sign of inedept and uncappable worldowners in letting these
people have rights in most cases- and this not only includes Gorean worlds
either, it stretches to all worlds- its important to make sure whoever is a
CT of your world has a reasonable judegment and is responsible. Many world
owners here I am sure will agree that in the past they have had problems
wiht builders (myself included) who decide to push the boundaries and end up
upsetting your friends or other people by ejecting them or causing other
social problems when they think they have a little power in your world.
Simply put, it goes to thier head lol

Back to the gorean community tho, which has a well established hieracy and
is based on power ethics, when taking this into consideration it is easy to
assume there is a strict code of conduct, so when a reasonable "wanderer"
appears looking for information with an open mind it can be tough to find
out more about it. "Go read the books" doesnt quite cover it in my book tho-
if I had a community such as the Goreans have- which I know to be highly
organised - would you not want to be promoting growth and the spread of
information? Would you not be proud of what you are and want others to know
about it?

If it is made or kept forbidden and secretive.. what the hell do you expect
when people are playin chinese whispers and the facts are distorted and an
underserved reputaion is created? It only reinforces peoples perceptions,
simple logic.

Fact is though, Gorean communites arnt full of sex mad crazyed maniacs who
commit murders all over the globe in some secretive organisation, most of
them are normal everyday people who live an alternative lifestyle and are
really pleasnt people. But like wiht any community, there are always idiots,
these probelms are found in every community when you anaylse it, just to
varying degrees.
Again, as Ti said, there are always a minority that give it a bad name, just
a shame that some of those people who are trigger happy are given the
responisbility of CT- it doesnt do anyone any favours.

At any rate, my own (limited) experience of Gorean communities has been good
and positive, though I have witnessed some incredible and strange happening
such as you describe Baro. i.e. People not given the chance to find out more
when they come with an open mind; Which is really the responsibility of the
world owner to make sure those who are given the power to eject are
responsible. I do have to say Ive met some very friendly Citezens there and
I will continue to visit from time to time to look at thier worlds and
respect thier ways, tho in thier realm, I think we should remember- vengence
can be swift lol

Just my couple of pennies for the jar.

Amen. Too true- but to dismiss any part of AW is a bit stupid - AWGZ is part
of the community and encourages new users into AW to actually keep it alive;
always good to draw new people in to the program- but as Baro suggests the
key to anything in life is to moderate- so mix it up, chat, build, model,
create, take breaks and mix it up!! Keeps life interesting!
Good to take breaks tho if something gets too much for you- to be able to
realsie that is a very good skill, hope it goes well for you Ryan and the
new CT offers AW the responsibility it deserves and wont misuse thier power.
You know what some people are like.
Have a good one :)

4.1 April Fools Prank

Apr 3, 2006, 7:25pm
Hope it lives up to the hype thats been created, at this rate it will be out
of date before it is released.
Honestly, if ya gonna make a release date, make it reasonable- pay attention
to time and resouirce managent; there will always be unforseen problems with
this type of thing, but seriously...
No offense to everyone who are working on the forthcoming release, as I am
sure they are working very hard and putting a lot of effort in-infact they
are probably working doubly hard due to the unrealistic release dates that
keep getting put back but this ill management is very poor at the most basic
level and only serves to mess everyone around. Both the customers and the
employees.
For one I am getting bored of waiting around and then having the odd random
communication about the release date being - "its not ready for release
yet" - Well, ha ha ha. Nice one; comic genius. I think everyone will still
be laughing at that little gem of hilarity when it still hasnt been released
next year. Yes- my ribs sure are hurting after that one, what a corker.
It all boils down to something called time and resource management- its not
hard, I could even recomend several very good books on the subject that
might help out with this- very simple really.. in a nut shell- all you do
is make realistic deadlines and keep your customers updated on the progress.
Making unrealistic deadlines that keep getting put back just means as Rossy
rightly points out;- that the company appear to be full of shit. That means
its not very good for customer relations. Period.
Who wants to be invovled with a company that cant meet its deadlines?
Did StageCoach Island have this problem? Why are we still waiting? etc etc
etc.
So as you can see -you really dont have to be a complete halfwit with even
half a braincell to comprehend the knock on effect it has when projects are
badly managed. Really it just serves to highlight the dire lack of
organisation and management ability to everyone involved. Set backs are
inevitable; so you prepare for them and keep people informed as to a
resonable and realistic timescale. Especially your customers.
If you cannot achieve this simple task and are in any sort of bussiness,
then you wont last long. Makes one wonder doesnt it.
If as much work went into Stage coach Island by AWI staff as it did getting
4.1 up and running we might have it by now.
Where the hell is our money actually going?? Where the hell is the money
from these corporate jobs going??
I see advertisments for more staff, yet a distinct lack of progress. Weird.
Personally I dont really care too much and I can wait for 4.1, but it sure
does raise some interesting questions.
I just hope it can live up to the hype and to the competition- which is
growing day by day and from strength to strength.
But lets face it- if AW really wanted to compete with its existing market it
has attracted, its gonna make sod all money. So diversifying into corporate
contracts- just as There.com did with its milatry contract (and
interestingly enough almost shut down its public world as a result) is one
area that will actually make money. Ofcourse the other choices AW have to
make any real cash is to go in direct competition with places like 2ndlife-
but that isnt going to happen without the out embracing the out and out
commercialism that 2ndlife revels in- and that isnt what AW seems to be all
about.
2ndlife and its counterparts are all updated regulary aswell plus many have
thier own well established economies- something which leaves AW standing..
So I cant see AW going toe to toe with it even with a new all singing and
dancing suped up V4.1 (that probably wont be updated for years to come).
But despite my sceptisism of the commercial success of AW- (not a concern of
mine other than it keeps going and we get 4.1 soon!!), AW is the best and
always will be the best, so it will be here I stay as my home.
But after being made to wait all this time with failed promises of release
dates and feeling as a customer left a bit in the dark and a bit confused
over it all; I really do hope it does live up to the hype. I am sure it
will, but I wont hold my breath, I might be here next year looking like a
very purple beetroot if I do.
Other companies seem to be able to set and meet deadlines, they would be out
of bussiness if they couldnt- So why cant AWI ?
Sort it out AWI.

lol

As far as jokes go tho, Ive heard funnier ones, but It didnt annoy or

4.1 April Fools Prank

Baro Wrote;

"I could see some complaints from lifeless obsessives if they actually
provided a link to a 4.1 download and after installing it and running
it, it turns out to be a joke that replaced your entire cache with
animated pictures of a dancing enzo"

Now that would be funny!!! See!! Now thats creative!!! I'd have appriciated
that lol

In response to the post about Adobe, they do make some good products, but
all are buggy that Ive used- Encore, Premiere After Effects, etc All these
Ive expereinced with glitches- expensive software that you dont expect to
mess up but as you point out; most software does have its bugs, - and it
takes time to sort out and get ready, fair enough... thats no problem- I'd
rather wait and get a good product; Project deadlines like this arent easy
to predict- warrented- but a good rule of thumb though is to work out how
much time you think you need- then double it. (Sound engineer's trick for
recording vocal tracks that).
I just hate waitin for trains when I am told they will be arriving lol

[View Quote]

5 days left on world is it worth me renewing?

Apr 29, 2006, 9:43pm
yep yep, it is a really nice world there and your modeling talents are great
Elysium, hope you decided to stay, would be a loss to AW.
Your disillusion with AWI over thier supposed, alledged forthcoming release
is understandable- especially when a lot of effort seems to be given in
recent months to recruit more staff for corporate clients; This happened to
there.com interestingly enough where the main world was almost shut down as
a result of a contract the company got with the milatry.
Clearly there is more money to be made from the corporate clients and I am
sure that has been taking up AWI's time; fair enough, they are a bussiness
but one has to wonder exactly where that leaves us. Well, we know where we
are left; in the dark and waiting for them to release the now infamous 4.1.
I guess it must sort of exist.
Obviously this is being worked on as hard as possible... well by the sounds
of it.... whilst working on the other projects whatever they be. And
ofcourse with its increased staff numbers- (which one can only draw the
conclusion that they are making enough money to support this demand), its
obvious that naturally they will need more time to finish 4.1. Ok so I am
being sarcastic.
I am disillusioned with this too- I look around at the competition and what
they offer me as a customer and a client and I can clearly see there is a
better deal to be had elsewhere. And why are they are happy to release a
buggy beta to other companies or individuals? Seems odd.. most online places
do offer an open beta these days even in the early stages, personally I
would prefer to see it open and in use and worked on as is- these things are
never perfect when they are released anyway. Is beta really that far
behind?? isnt stable enough for an open beta?? By now!!??
This program is outdated, let us make no mistakes. It needs to be updated
and brought into line with the competition -and fast. And that means in all
areas if AWI really wants to compete wiht the big boys. Maybe AWI doesnt
want to do that tho. There is something about AW that is very special and
maybe it is that it is slightly behind the times and simplistic that makes
it works so well as it is- otherwise many of you and I wouldnt still be
here. Unfourtuantly tho Ive a feeling that despite all the new and now
overly hyped features- most of which have now shown themselves in other
universes anyways- It will all be too little, too late. I do hope I am
wrong. For Activeworlds to compete in an ever growing market- it has to
diversify; fine- do that, but make sure your main customer base is satisfied
1st- and keep them informed as to developments and timescale would be nice
too- I dont think that is much to ask in this day and age; pretty much every
other company does.. there.com, secondlife, a lot of online games.. it is a
basic standard that seems to be lacking in the company customer relations
and supprisingly so as there is a real desire from its customer base for
such information. It really doesnt take much to keep customers informed with
a simple webpage updating them every week or even every month, even if a
general, brief overview.. Take a look at all the other online places out
there.. take a look at how they deal with this sort of thing and compare
them to AWI, its very interesting and reveals a lot, especially when we pay
a LOT more than other places.
Im content to wait for 4.1 as I said before, no worries, but I dont feel it
is asking much for an official update once in a while to install confidence;
and by that I dont mean "jokes" like "youre are not getting it yet!! April
fool!! hahaha!!" -and yes my sides are still splitting from that one.
From all I have heard in recent months- as we all have- It would seem that
4.1 wont be the answer to all of AWI's problems, but it sure would help.
Again, I just hope it doesnt turn into too little too late.
Just my 10 pennys worth again lol

Heretik.
